Then you can use any one of numerous free or inexpensive programs to record them as .wav files, which is essentially equivalent to the individual tracks on an audio CD. I use MusicMatch as my recorder, but there are many others available as well. Next you just need to burn the CD as an audio disk using the CD writer software of your choice. One hint: there are now appearing CD players which will read files in MP3 format as well, so, if you have many albums you may want to consider recording them as MP3's, which will allow up to ten times as much music on one CD. Then, of course, you'd have to buy the player (although you could listen to them by playing them on your computer's CD-ROM drive).

From: wildlone I have been told that if you run a lead from the head phone socket on your stereo to the mike input on the computer,save the music as a wav file you can record that way. I think that this would only record in mono. Some sound cards have a line in on them that you can attach to the line out on your system [or the speaker outlets]that would let you record in stereo. I have not got a CDRW yet so I have not tried any methods yet. |

From: RWilhelm Once you get your music into .wav files you can remove or atleast reduce the effect of scratches and pops with a software product called Ray Gun by Arboretum Systems. It costs around $100 but it is well worth it if your records are as scratchy as mine. |

From: Rana Hi, I have been very happy with a product called audiotools http://www.btinternet.com/~amfish/index.htm is the web address. It records and processes directly (if that's the right way of phrasing)and so doesn't require extra memory. Note you will need 10 mB per minute of music. So for a 74 min CD you'll need at least 740 mB spare on you hard drive - which isn't too bad these days I suppose. I connect the tape output from my amplifier to the line-in on my computer. If you try and connect your tone-arm leads directly you will need some sort of pre-amp. Another programme which seems good is Cooledit. This also comes with noise reduction/scratch removal plugins. There are numerous scratch "fixers" - I've used popfix. One has to be careful though - saxaphone and other things can be recognised as scratches. The whole process can be quite time consumming. Also if the burning to CD-R goes wrong you end up with a coaster. I've been forced to burn at 1x speed to avoid limitations on my computer - so set it up and go away for 3 hours. It is worth while - I've started relistening to many of my old lps. Rana
