Up until recently, I haven't bothered too much with www but this facility is ACE!!! Experts (?) at your fingertips! Great to hear about Hedy West. Pity we have to eat, sleep & earn a crust.

I've been chasing up a handful of folk songs recently and now I've got to this one which I've had at the back of my mind for many years, but this time its a c&w number. In '62 Locklin had some success with WE'RE GONNA GO FISHIN' and I was hoping some of you might have the lyrics. The chorus goes :-

Lipstick, makeup, leave behind
Makeup takes up too much time
You're a little honey and you're quite a dish
But Saturday night we're goin' fishin' to fish

(NB pre P.C.!!)

I do have it . . . somewhere. I am sure that others do too. I'll look for it, but can't give you a time frame, too much going on around here.

Copied from http://www.luma-electronic.cz/lp/l/Locklin/locklin_waysoflife.htm -- but the text there is full of errors. (Read it for a good laugh.) I have tried to correct them by listening to several sound samples found at CDNOW, especially the one from Spade Cooley. But I may have missed a few.

WE'RE GONNA GO FISHIN'
(Tex Atchison, © 1962.)

Oh, bring along your fishin' pole. Leave your dirty dishes.
Meet me by the fishin' hole and wear your leather britches.
Tell your ma and pa everything's all right.
We're really goin' fishin' next Saturday night.

CHO: Lipstick, makeup, leave behind.
Makeup takes up too much time.
You're a little honey and you're quite a dish.
Saturday night we're goin' fishin' to fish.

Don't forget your fryin' pan. Bring along some minners [minnows].
We're gonna catch a catfish and cook it up for dinner.
Roll it up. Fry it up. Bake it up right.
We're really goin' fishin' next Saturday night. CHO.

Never mind your powder puff. We're not goin' dancin',
'Cause your daddy's had enough o' dancin' an' romancin'.
Bring along your brother. That'll be all right.
We're really goin' fishin' next Saturday night. CHO.

[Sung by Spade Cooley on "Big Band 1950-1952," Harlequin CD 144, 1999; and by Hank Locklin on "The Ways of Life," RCA Victor LSP 2680, 1963.]

"I'll look for it, but can't give you a time frame,"

Gee, only two years, and it still has not "turned up"

The writer, Tex Atchison was part of the Prairie Ramblers.

That is a site from the Czech Republic, so I figure from looking around the rest of it ( http://www.luma-electronic.cz/lp/elpe.htm ) that it is definitely a labor of love, with the emphasis on labor when dealing with a foreign language. Quote: Most lyrics are cut-down from the records. If there'd be any mistakes please Email to petrv@yahoo.com

I find that I actually made use of it a few days ago, without noticing anything else about the site. I was checking out Little Blossom by Dolly Parton and found the words there.

Thanks, Jim.

Dale: Thanks for pointing that the site was Czech. I would have been more forgiving if I had noticed that. I copied the URL without reading it.

Anyway, it's better to have lyrics posted that are incomplete or full of errors than no lyrics at all. Many's the time I've taken a phrase from an imperfect set of lyrics, plugged it into a search engine, and found a better set of lyrics somewhere else, or a sound file, or some information that would help someone somehow.

Let no one be discouraged from posting lyrics, no matter how faulty.
