Now, thinking about what Patrish said and others who've suggested Ceiledhs, performences etc. etc. Can we post what our (realistic) mudcat-gettogether-dreams might be? This way, we might get something for everyone and possibly have two or three 'events' running at a time. For example, what do we expect/wish for on Arrival at Llanstock? What would we like to happen on the Saturday? Should we have more than one 'happening' at a time - to cater for different tastes? As far as I'm concerned, I could quite happily spend the whole weekend singing and listening to others sing. So I suppose my request might be for as many sing-songs as we can fit in. I suppose restrictions might involve - no of venues, space etc., weather, number of people (yes, I know it's difficult to have an intimate sing-song if sixty people turn up). Lets make this weekend meet our dreams. We have five weeks to get sorted. Catrin

Anybody up for it? I have been to song writing workshops in the past and have been dissappointed that it consisted of people who, albeit extremely good and talented, were singing their own songs rather than giving some kind of instrucion on technique, which was what I expected. Perhaps, in this case, people who wanted to attend could bring a song they had written and share how it was they came to write it. That would be dead interesting, for me at least. I think Buff has applied for an extension till midnight both nights, but you'll have to carry your own beer to the Institute, 100 yards away. I think I've got some people to run a snackbar all afternoon and evening Saturday for cups of tea, coffee, butties and stuff. Scenery? just look over the houses!!! There is a lovely river walk, and I'll lend you a couple of hyperactive dogs to take with you!! Liz, I have arranged for visits to the playground with some children for Phoebe, if she would like that. There will be music in the pub on Friday night from 8 ish till we get thrown out at midnight. Are there dungeons in Llanthingy? perhaps a large shed? I have never been to a songwriting workshop but I have written a few songs and used them as instruments of torture in the local clubs with some considerable effect. I think we should all bring some ideas along. finished songs can be performed in the village hall but to write songs we will need ideas. if those interested all brought a couple of lyrical lines with them and perhaps half a dozen notes of varying length and intensity, we would have all the ingrediments. Then all we would need is one person with a chair and a whip to keep all the passionate emotion under control. I'm rather fond of whips but I wouldn't mind being restrained by anyone else who might be willing! |

I am looking forward to meeting all the fellow catters. The CD sounds a nice idea. Why not throughout the celidh (if it happens) you give catters the chance to perform while the dancers are having a rest, only brife 1 or 2 numbers at the most. Only if they want to. Then everyone would get the chance to see each catter in a slightly different light than say a normal music session as I know that often people have a hidden reportore that only veers its head in such cercumstances. I have a contact at Heathrow who can supply swiss army knives with kitchen, bedroom, toilet and petrol-station blades attached, available this week only at the low, low introductory price of £19.99.99 etc(no warranty or delivery) but I told her she'd be wasting her time at Llanstock. She's gone back to her distributors with a remit for instant dehydration (just add water, save a fortune on alcohol), horse-sedatives (for the locals) and wind-breaks (post-curry defenses). I'm coming from the US, from Portland Oregon - that's on the Northwest Coast of the US - and this is my first trip to your part of the world. I'm sorting through all the threads to figure out where and when you're meeting. I don't know if I'll have a car or not, so I was wondering if anyone would have room for a passenger in their car. I'll be around Peacehaven, East Sussex, or near Lewes or Rottingdean or Brighton on the 12th or 13th. I was also wondering about a place to stay. I wasn't planning on bringing camping gear because I wanted to travel lighter. Are there any pubs that rent rooms or B&Bs or something like that? How many people are attending? I'm sure that people coming from "down south" will reply if they can provide you with transport. If not, we can check out buses or trains. There are still rooms available at the Red Lion and Pippins, and a number of local people have offered beds or settees or floorspace if needed. If the timing doesn't work out with Bill, Morticia, your plan sounds great! As for nervousness about whether we will like each other, I recently attended a similar gathering of Mudcatters at the Old Songs Festival in Albany, New York, US. It was a very nice group of Mudcatters, one of whom was Bill Sables, and it felt like family. I didn't know anyone when I arrived and I had a wonderful time. So I'm sure we will have a good time. After all, it is the responsibility of all of us to be nice to each other, and hopefully that will take some of the pressure off of Bron. The badges are about 2 inches round with the fish in the banjo logo in full colour and your name in blue round the bottom the cost is £1 for two badges. Shrewsbury is a mediaeval town, with a castle and abbey ruins, is nice, has a round church (St Chad's) and a canal (4 Counties Ring), and I was ill last time I went there, so would like to see some bits of it again, without having my head in a bucket. A chippie is a fish and chip shop, an establishment where you can usually purchase cooked fish in batter and a mass of chips (french fries) that stick together all supplied with excess grease free of charge. Occasionally you strike lucky and find one that does cook the stuff properly but in my experience, they are rare. Jon |

The double booking is a terrible vanity thing, I'm afraid. A friend rang me and asked if I would be interested in helping do some croaking on a proposed CD - and it's not the sort of offer I get every day (If you heard my singing you'd know why), so... But it's bloody Sod's Law that the two things clash. However, the NEXT UK gathering is a definite must for me. Meanwhile, if the CD works out, I'll post details. |
