UK gathering 3

From: Catrin

OK folks.

Now, thinking about what Patrish said and others who've suggested Ceiledhs, performences etc. etc.

Can we post what our (realistic) mudcat-gettogether-dreams might be? This way, we might get something for everyone and possibly have two or three 'events' running at a time.

For example, what do we expect/wish for on Arrival at Llanstock?

What would we like to happen on the Saturday?

Should we have more than one 'happening' at a time - to cater for different tastes?

As far as I'm concerned, I could quite happily spend the whole weekend singing and listening to others sing. So I suppose my request might be for as many sing-songs as we can fit in.

I suppose restrictions might involve - no of venues, space etc., weather, number of people (yes, I know it's difficult to have an intimate sing-song if sixty people turn up).

Lets make this weekend meet our dreams. We have five weeks to get sorted.

I'd like the petrol to get there! (at a lower price of course!) I am quite happy with the weekend of continual singing, laughing and talking.(plus some eating and do they sell orange and soda?) How many are going? I think I'll probably camp if it's not too far from the happening-perhaps we should call it Llanfairstock!(or jusr Llanstock) Hope it isn't as muddy as Woodstock looked! What time does the chippie close? Is there a curry house? Has the pub got an all night extentsion? (for 2 nights?) I expect it will be dark, will there be signs (in English please) that say "Mudcat" this way or just "bugger off"? (By the way Noreen- my ironing board is any flat space near the electric socket-bet you thought my Mrs does it all! Ha- (not that I iron much, but I can-don't expect anything but a dishevelled Eric) Oh by the way Can anyone plat hair?-my wife usually does it for me every morning. Oh well back to the normal computer use-bye. Cheers Eric

I can plait hair, does anyone do hair wraps, I can bring my own threads - there's about 3ft of hair to do.....

I can do wraps too, but not on my own head!!

Any chance of some eating and sleeping time? Any scenery to look around, something for a hyperactive, pasta eating 4 yr old to do? She loves mangling animals, but is not musically social - when I sing, she puts her hands over her ears or my mouth - I guess I shouldn't sing so loud!!

How about a writing workshop? - we can set up thought for the day for a 12month!!

Does anyone have a video link? Can we do a live Mudcat Hearandseeme?

Am I getting a bit overexcited now???

If anyone wants a quiz, for a bit of a difference, I'm sure Micca would oblige, he has a couple ready..... first prize could be the petrol home!!

Oh yes, sorry, non-facetious comments required- I'm game for anything (so he shot her).

I'd like a good singing session (unaccompanied or mixed) and a bit of dancing would be fun. I'll play piano with any scratch ceili band if required, unless anyone else would rather do so. I'll fit in with whatever's going on, sounds wonderful!

Ooooooh, I'm all excited now. A writing workshop is something I hadn't thought of but something I would love to be involved in. Anybody up for it?

I have been to song writing workshops in the past and have been dissappointed that it consisted of people who, albeit extremely good and talented, were singing their own songs rather than giving some kind of instrucion on technique, which was what I expected.

Perhaps, in this case, people who wanted to attend could bring a song they had written and share how it was they came to write it. That would be dead interesting, for me at least.

Anybody else interested in this as maybe a short diversions from the singing?

Blimey, you don't want much, do you???"grin"
The chippy is open till 10, but would probably stay open later if needed, they do a good variety of food, including burgers and veggie choices.
I think Buff has applied for an extension till midnight both nights, but you'll have to carry your own beer to the Institute, 100 yards away.
I think I've got some people to run a snackbar all afternoon and evening Saturday for cups of tea, coffee, butties and stuff.
Scenery? just look over the houses!!! There is a lovely river walk, and I'll lend you a couple of hyperactive dogs to take with you!!
Liz, I have arranged for visits to the playground with some children for Phoebe, if she would like that.
There will be music in the pub on Friday night from 8 ish till we get thrown out at midnight.
Any more ideas? Bron.

I want to know--WHERE HAS MICCA STOCKPILED THE PETROL? This is sounding so good, I need this weekend just to get my head out of the muck for a while. I shall be leaving Cleckheaton around 16.30 ish and going down the M62 and then M6 and then turning off somewhere near Shrewsbury. Don't knopw what time I shall be returning on sunday, but it won't be so late-though if the house-boss will ring up work and tell them I am deadly sick and to stuff it up their arses, then I won't come back at all. Are we looking at lifts and petrol sharing etc? Pick up points etc? Cheers. Eric.

A songwriting workshop? might need to be in a secluded place where the screaming cannot be overheard. A dungeon maybe? Are there dungeons in Llanthingy? perhaps a large shed? I have never been to a songwriting workshop but I have written a few songs and used them as instruments of torture in the local clubs with some considerable effect. I think we should all bring some ideas along. finished songs can be performed in the village hall but to write songs we will need ideas. if those interested all brought a couple of lyrical lines with them and perhaps half a dozen notes of varying length and intensity, we would have all the ingrediments. Then all we would need is one person with a chair and a whip to keep all the passionate emotion under control. I'm rather fond of whips but I wouldn't mind being restrained by anyone else who might be willing!

next verse is yours Catrin and By the time we get to Llanstock we'll be half a million verses strong. Then all we'll need is a fairly large orchestra and a recording studio. Bron will organize it.. she's brilliant at organizing stuff

Gomez, now that you mention recording, Jim thinks he can record some of the music that will be happening, and put it on CD. What do people think?
If the weather is fine, then I have an ideal place for songwriting. There is a stone circle near the river, with a storyteller's chair and benches. Perhaps a picnic lunch on Saturday before we start singing?
Just an idea.

Hi

Sorry I haven't inputted into this thread earlier. I alway like a good tune and a celidh dance. Sounds good to me. I am looking forward to meeting all the fellow catters. The CD sounds a nice idea. Why not throughout the celidh (if it happens) you give catters the chance to perform while the dancers are having a rest, only brife 1 or 2 numbers at the most. Only if they want to. Then everyone would get the chance to see each catter in a slightly different light than say a normal music session as I know that often people have a hidden reportore that only veers its head in such cercumstances.

Cheers, Sam

OK Gomez - Here goes

Oh!.. the joys and frustrations of mudcat
are not for the mild and the meek
you can't always trust a posting that arrives
with it's tongue in it's cheek
when you can't find the words to a melody
that's been squirrelling round in your head
In the digi-traditional archives
Then you'll just have to start your own thread

When you think of a good name for said thread,
you post it without much delay
'Lyrics required, I've scoured the DT
but nothing would turn up today'
Then comes the inevitable answer
Which makes you feel such a geek
'The link is right here, you dimwit
I posted it myself last week'

Trilogy or not, no one can be really prepared for this event. I have a contact at Heathrow who can supply swiss army knives with kitchen, bedroom, toilet and petrol-station blades attached, available this week only at the low, low introductory price of £19.99.99 etc(no warranty or delivery) but I told her she'd be wasting her time at Llanstock. She's gone back to her distributors with a remit for instant dehydration (just add water, save a fortune on alcohol), horse-sedatives (for the locals) and wind-breaks (post-curry defenses). Bron will no doubt already have all of the above on site on arrival but there's no way of knowing how long stocks will last. >br (for those, like me, who have lost the thread)

Hello Llanfair and company, Bill Sables told me about the gathering and I'd like to attend. I'm coming from the US, from Portland Oregon - that's on the Northwest Coast of the US - and this is my first trip to your part of the world.

I'm sorting through all the threads to figure out where and when you're meeting. I don't know if I'll have a car or not, so I was wondering if anyone would have room for a passenger in their car. I'll be around Peacehaven, East Sussex, or near Lewes or Rottingdean or Brighton on the 12th or 13th.

I was also wondering about a place to stay. I wasn't planning on bringing camping gear because I wanted to travel lighter. Are there any pubs that rent rooms or B&Bs or something like that?

How many people are attending? It sounds like thousands or more! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Here's to you, Llanfair! Linda Mattson

Hello Linda, I am so pleased that you will be able to attend the gathering in October.
I'm sure that people coming from "down south" will reply if they can provide you with transport. If not, we can check out buses or trains.
There are still rooms available at the Red Lion and Pippins, and a number of local people have offered beds or settees or floorspace if needed. You can ring Pippins on 01938 810229, or the Red Lion on 01938 810341
Get back to me if you need alternative accommodation.
So far we have 20 mudcatters definitely coming, some with families and/or dogs, and another 10 or so not sure. Not thousands, but enough to make a decent crowd.
Cheers, Bron.

Hello Bron, Thanks for your message. Bill Sables emailed me regarding a ride, and I'll be checking with him. If the timing doesn't work out with Bill, Morticia, your plan sounds great!

As for nervousness about whether we will like each other, I recently attended a similar gathering of Mudcatters at the Old Songs Festival in Albany, New York, US. It was a very nice group of Mudcatters, one of whom was Bill Sables, and it felt like family. I didn't know anyone when I arrived and I had a wonderful time. So I'm sure we will have a good time. After all, it is the responsibility of all of us to be nice to each other, and hopefully that will take some of the pressure off of Bron. I wish I could bring some of our good Oregon Microbrews to you all. It would be enjoyable to compare English and Welsh ales with Oregon-ish.

Looking forward to meeting everyone soon! Linda P.S. Any helpful hints about weather, or weird things I should bring?

She also refuses to use her potty al fresco, so we have to keep finding proper loos. Will she give up her potty at home though? Will she buggery.

I have noticed that Badger and Tig will not be comming to the gathering so if anyone who is going would like mudcat badges with their names I will get badger to make them and bring them over with me. The badges are about 2 inches round with the fish in the banjo logo in full colour and your name in blue round the bottom the cost is £1 for two badges. I will have a few tee shirts with me in Wales if anyone needs one. To order badges either order on this thread or email me here or email badger here

I've developed a virus, but the doctor assures me I'll be better soon.

This is all very timely because I start my new job on the 16th! Which is the day after we all get back. What a wonderful way to celebrate!!!!

Looking forward to this, excited like a giddy kid.

Dalek - tell yer mum she's WONDERFUL for making all this come about.

Looks like I can make the Fri. but not the Sat. A friend has decided to turn 50 on Sat. Very inconsiderate.

Anyway, Red Lion isn't answering, so shall try again later. I've got a meeting in Llangollen on Fri. aft. and will come along thereafter. Do you want me to bring anything? I may be one of the earlier arrivals so if you want help with supper, I'm yours for the asking.

Anyone know if real ale keeps in plastic jugs? I could pick up a couple of six-pinters at the Thos. Watkins brewery in Llandeilo on the way up on Thurs. night if they'd keep OK til Fri ... ?

Sian, I'm sure the beer will be fine, although glass containers are supposed to be the best-demijohns? Not being a beer drinker, I'm probably not the best one to ask!!
Oh, Dalek, I've ordered a badge for you, in case you can make it.
Cheers, Bron.

The Shark has discovered that the local steam railway is not running that weekend, and is mortally wounded, but I've convinced him that there will be things to look at in Shrewsbury, especially if you are a fan of Ellis Peters' dectective monk, Brother Cadfael. Shrewsbury is a mediaeval town, with a castle and abbey ruins, is nice, has a round church (St Chad's) and a canal (4 Counties Ring), and I was ill last time I went there, so would like to see some bits of it again, without having my head in a bucket.

Beginning to get really excited now....

Hello Mudcatters, To get a start on my much needed British education, what is a chippie? And where in Wales is Llanfair? Is it near Shrewsbury?

Bill, do you and Sam and Patrish plan to camp? If so, I think I better try to get a bed or a room somewhere. I'll have a mid-size suitcase, small bag and a fiddle. Will there be room??

See you all in a week! Thanks from a Yank (or is that a bad name?), Linda from Portland, Oregon, US

P.S. I'm bringing a minidisc recorder if anyone would like to get themselves recorded for posterity. It's only for personal use, probably isn't professional quality, but it's really teensy and transportable.

Linda, Llanfair lives in Llanfair Caerenion near Welshpool and that is not too far from Shrewsbury.

A chippie is a fish and chip shop, an establishment where you can usually purchase cooked fish in batter and a mass of chips (french fries) that stick together all supplied with excess grease free of charge. Occasionally you strike lucky and find one that does cook the stuff properly but in my experience, they are rare.

Liz, check out the Centre for Alternative Technology, they have a website, and I'm sure that the volunteers at the railway will be delighted to show your SO the sheds and engines and stuff. They are regulars at the music night, and we know them quite well.
See you soon, Bron.

Tarnation take it!
After weeks of ticking off the days to going aborad (well, Wales is another country after all), I'm now double booked and won't be able to make the trek. I'll be with you in spirit (and wine and beer) nevertheless. And, if I could order a badge, I'd be hugely grateful - give it to any of the madder London 'Catters and I'll settle up with them.
And have a bloody wonderful time every one of you!

Don't worry - I'm used to that sort of reception when I decline something (when you've got kids, you have to develop a thick hide!)
The double booking is a terrible vanity thing, I'm afraid. A friend rang me and asked if I would be interested in helping do some croaking on a proposed CD - and it's not the sort of offer I get every day (If you heard my singing you'd know why), so...
But it's bloody Sod's Law that the two things clash. However, the NEXT UK gathering is a definite must for me.
Meanwhile, if the CD works out, I'll post details.

I am frightfully jealous! I hope you all have a wonderful time. What a bunch of nutters you are. This event will live in infamy.

If any of you have ANY energy left for a visiting Yank after this is all over, I shall be jumping the puddle on October 23rd (my birthday even), arriving the UK the 24th, and leaving the 30th. I hope to attend some sort of Samhain thingie at the Rollrights if such a thing occurs...

Liz and Micca, would love to see you and yours again! Given the high price of petrol, I am wondering if a trip to North Wales is even fathomable this time round. I have been advised to get a rail pass before I leave the states...

I hope to hit Glastonbury, Salisbury, Avebury, Oxford/Banbury and any nearby environs...meeting up with fellow Catters would be an added bonus. Beer, kisses, songs and treats for any who offer me their floor.

have a lovely time, all!
