I hate to bring this up,

I think I heard the worst Pop song ever today on an oldies station. "It's a Turn Down Day, nothin's on my mind It's a turn down day, and I dig it "

What the hell was that about?

*shrug*...to some of us, 'oldies' means before 1800

Someone ought to "dig it" a big hole and let it fall in.

From: katlaughing

Well, now that I've actually looked at all the words, I don't think it is all that bad, at all! Take a look:

Turn Down Day
The Cyrkle

It's much too groovy a summer's day
To waste runnin' round in the city
But here on the sand I can dream away
Or look at the girls if they're pretty

Chorus:

It's a turn-down day
Nothin' on my mind
It's a turn-down day
And I dig it
There's nothing easier I can do
Than lyin' around doing nothing

[repeat chorus]

Soft summer breeze and the surf rolls in
To laughter of small children playin'
Someone's radio has the news tuned in
But nobody cares what he's sayin'

[repeat chorus]

Things that are waiting to mess my mind
Will just have to wait 'til tomorrow

[repeat chorus to fade]

Probably was being sung by Major Tom, psychotic astronaut, the day before he lifted off on his one way mission.

Two years ago I assisted a fantastic stand up comedy night.the beginning of it was unforgettable. It was like:suddenly some background music was put on.It was that song from Blur

'I've got my head checked
by a jumbo jet
it wasn't easy
tec'
what the comedian did was simply to step on stage with carboard signs of this lyrics. We laughed a lot, until the last sign which siad:"What the fuck....?!" and yeah,is my english so bad?after two years I'm still wondering what those words mean.Hangover,probably.

Cyrkle also graced us with "Red Rubber Ball". Great lyrics such as "you're not the only starfish in the sea". I think it was written by Paul Simon. He must have been having a turned down day with that one.

I would put Turn Down Day right up there with 39th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)by Paul Simon and Dancin' in the Moonlight, and In the Summer Time by the great Mungo Jerry. They were feel-good songs, dedicated to the proposition that all of us freaks lying around with no shoes and flowers in our hair and playing a guitar with a string missing had actually found the key to happiness - do nothing and feel good about it.Y'know...I kinda miss it.

We get it on most every night
When that ol' moon gets big and bright
It's such a fine and natural sight
Everybody dancin' in the moonlight
We like our fun and we never fight
You can't dance and stay up-tight
It's supernatural delight
Everybody dancin' in the moonlight

If memory serves ( and at my age, it usually doesn't), it was originally "A Turned On Day" and a controversy erupted over the perceived drug reference. It was then re-recorded with the "sound-alike" lyric to get airplay.

I think Blazoona may be on to something - that kind of stuff happened a lot in the 60's.

This is another "Austin Powers" of a song; it loses something taken out of it's decade. Back then it sounded pretty great when you were "turned down (on)" and just didn't feel like dealing with things. And the electric sitar - what more can one say?

Be serious Jeri......We all remember that one. But in reading Leej's post up there, I don't remember them erecting a bridge on 39th. Trying to feel groovy there would put you in the river.........not a pleasant place to be. Think I'll stick to 59th street.

Aw come on Lena! "Song 2" by Blur ROCKS! It's one of those "say uh! and yell" songs! Besides, Damon & the rest of the guys from Blur were being cheeky, and wrote the song that way on purpous--the silly lyrics were a deliberate poking-fun of meaningless pop/rock songs, as well as American Indie-style rock, ala Pavement. Sort of the apotheosis of silly but infectious nature of these sorts of songs. Anyway, I love the song, and the album. Maybe the comedian shoulda read up on it before he knocked it. Poking fun at a parody doesn't really work...

I got my head checked
By a jumbo jet
It wasn't easy
But nothing is, no

Woohoo!
When I feel heavy metal--Woohoo!
And I'm pins and I'm needles--Woohoo!
Well, I lie and I'm easy
All of the time
But I am never sure why I need you
Pleased to meet you!

I got my head down
When I was young
It's not my problem
It's not my problem

Woohoo!
When I feel heavy metal--Woohoo!
And I'm pins and I'm needles--Woohoo!
Well, I lie and I'm easy
All of the time
But I am never sure why I need you
Pleased to meet you!

Yeah yeah!
Yeah yeah!
Yeah yeah!
ALL RIGHT.

BTW the song is now used on a Pentium commercial...I jive everytime I hear it.

All this pop garbage is one reason I'm thankful every day for my juke box style 200 cd player. Shuffling 200 cd's, mostly folk, that I actually LIKE, is way better and less repetitious than radio. Not to mention, no ads, no announcements, no fundraising, no station breaks, no promotions, none o' that junk! It makes me one happy camper!

Re the comedy and songs: Peter Kay does a great spot where he plays (on a little dictaphone type thing) songs with ambiguous lyrics. Then once he has told you what they sound like to him, you can't help but hear it that way. One of them was "We Are Family" with the line "Makin' love in a femidom"! He did a great one with a Shania Twain song - but I can't for the life of me remember it.

See the tree, how big it's grown
But friend, it hasn't been too long,
it wasn't big
I laughed at her and she go mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twing

Then the first snow came
And she ran up to brush the snow away so it wouldn't die
Came running in, all excited
Slipped and almost hurt herself and I laughed till I cried She was always young at heart,
kind of dumb and kind of smart
And I loved her so

Don't you find women just love to hear that. Den 8-)

My just-love-to-hate-it pop song is "Johnny Get Angry" sung by Joanie Sommers (1962--reached #7 in USA charts!)

Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad
Give me the biggest lecture I've ever had
I want a brave man
I want a caveman
Johnny show me that you care, really care for me.

Ewwwww! Makes my skin crawl!

It is not at all clear why catspaw feels compelled to drive these things endlessly into the ground, long after all the humour in them has been pulped and kneaded and burned out of them. My current theory is that he is imitating Homer, who was fond of the epithet as a structuring device to fill out the metric structure. For example, upon every appearance of the goddess Athena, she is referred to as "Athene bouwapis" (ox-eyed Athena). This gives the poem a kind of repetitive coherence. This may be his way of making his life somewhat epical in the Homeric sense.

yours, Peter T.
