THE BELLS OF ST MARY'S
CHORUS
The bells of St. Mary's. Ah! hear they are calling,
The bells of St. Mary's at sweet even time,
At the porch of St. Mary's, I'll wait there for you, |

14 Sep 00 - 04:37 PM (#297416) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Bells Of St Marys From: The Walrus I seem to recall that there is also a military parody "The Balls of Sar'nt-Major" I can's seem to lay hands on the book I saw it in, but IIRC it went along the lines The balls of Sar'nt-Major are wrinkled and crinckled Capacious and spacious as the dome of St Pauls Crowd they do muster to gaze at the cluster Of our Sergeant-Major's balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, (this last sung in a decending peal to imitate bells)
If I can find the details before this thread dissappears, I'll post them. |

I'll notate it after the Olympics, unless someone else volunteers in the meantime. Walrus your version is great. Good luck with the rest of the lyrics. Regards, John |

20 Mar 05 - 05:09 AM (#1438773) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Bells Of St Marys From: Dave'sWife Aren't there some additional lyrics for this that have a Christmas theme to them? I honestly don't know. I do know that that one of the John Fahey Christmas albums had a lovely version which I tried to learn to pick back in the 80's. It was always a song we played at Chritsmas time but perhaps that has more to do with the fact that here in the USA, the film BELLS OF ST. MARY'S is shown every year during the holidays. Thanks |

30 Sep 07 - 08:29 PM (#2160750) Subject: Lyr Add: THE BELLS OF ST MARY'S (Furber/Adams) From: Jim Dixon There are two problems with the version given above. (1) The chorus and verses aren't labeled as such (though they are labeled in the DT, which was apparently copied from this thread), and (2) there is a typo in verse 1 line 1: It should be "eventide" not "even time." From Indiana University Sheet Music Collections: THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S Words, Douglas Furber. Music, A. Emmett Adams. New York: Ascherberg, Hopwood & Crew, Ltd. © 1917. 1. The bells of Saint Mary's at sweet eventide Shall call me, beloved, to come to your side; And out in the valley, in sound of the sea, I know you'll be waiting, yes, waiting for me. CHORUS: The bells of Saint Mary's, ah! hear they are calling The young loves, the true loves, who come from the sea; And so, my beloved, when red leaves are falling, The love-bells shall ring out, ring out for you and me. 2. At the porch of St. Mary's I'll wait there for/with you In my/your soft wedding dress with its ribbons of blue. In the church of St. Mary's, sweet voices shall sing. For you and me, dearest, the wedding bells ring. |

01 Oct 07 - 02:46 PM (#2161328) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Bells of St Mary's From: GUEST,Sapper on the Flying Banana; I was always led to believe the song was written about St. Mary's Church in Southampton LONG before the Bing Crosby film of that name. Could someone clarify? |

01 Oct 07 - 03:17 PM (#2161348) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Bells of St Mary's From: Q (Frank Staplin) Douglas Furber (1885-1961) was English. Dunno if the verses were written about a particular church. (Adams originally Australian). |
