Oh, my high school German was wrong then? (What a surprise, eh? **BG**) We were told it was Fröeliche Geburtstag.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MRS. DUCK!

Fine crowd you've got there. Have a great day and evening and year!

I think your German instructor was right, too, kat. It's been too long for me to remember the actual meanings of froehliche and hertzliche, though. Don't actually remember the latter.

And Happy Birthday, of course, to Frau Duck.

It was probably my memory that's wrong, even though I am doing A Level German now!! Anyroad, there are different ways of saying it!

Firecat--

'Twouldn't suprise me if you're both right. Although I think we in the English speaking world tend to forget that other languages are often less (or more) polyglot in origin, vocabulary, and color than our own, German is certainly full enough of figurative language to support at least two ways to say "happy birthday." I've often been delighted to discover the "literal" meanings of some of the German phrases for some of these things, such as "ach du lieber."
