After all there have been questions about books, jobs, toothpaste, and breakfast cereals. I avoided posting to the annoying threads but noticed that we had a lot of fun with the books thread. So this is a natural outcropping of that one. So here we go my friends. It would be convenient if we post to the following categories. That might allow us to avoid spin off threads on the same subject. How do you compare a movie that totally blew you away when you were 16, with one that seemed deeply meaningful to the more mature (or cynical) you of today? But for what it's worth, here's my list. All of them (except the winner of the "worst" category) are movies that I revisit regularly, and have never yet been disappointed by. Absolute All Time Favorite: It's a Wonderful Life Most Influential: Dr Strangelove Funniest: A Day at the Races Most Exciting: Bullitt Saddest: Blade Runner Worst: Yellowbeard And how about one more category - best musical movie? Meaning 'best movie centred on music', but not necessarily best 'movie musical' (as in South Pacific, etc.) For that one, my vote goes to Jazz on a Summer's Day. Wassail!

In the USA it seems to have become as much a staple of Crhistmas as the Queen's Speech is in the UK - maybe more so. I remember spending one Christmas just outside Chicago, and I swear you could have watched the film 24 hours a day by hopping rom channel to channel. It is a wonderful tearjerker though. But, good grief, only one "Citizen Kane" and no "Casablanca" so far? Shame on you all! For a film that I can (and do) watch a couple of times a year, "Casablanca" has to be the one. It's simple, corny and always moves me to tears - but that's maybe because Ingrid Bergman has to be the most beautiful woman to have graced the screen (until maybe Juliette Binoche and Beatrice Dalle...), and thus Rick's selflessness is so much the more poignant. Particularly as I always thought Victor Laszlo was a bit of a drip. Pah, women!! In terms of cult films that you tend to remember vast chunks of dialogue, there's the Python epics from my schooldays, the wonderful "Withnail and I" and - beloved of every English schoolboy in the Seventies - If. But, for sheer take-your-breath away impact, the best film I ever saw was years ago when they re-edited the Abel Gance "Napoleon". That is some film! |

Another one from a few years ago I enjoyed was "The Man who came to dinner" - could never find it on video, fortunately either TVO or PBS showed it. 3 with musical themes are the 2 mentioned above "Commitments" and "Spinal Tap" but I'll also add "Lenigrad Cowboys do America" Funniest for me include "Afterhours" and "No Surrender" and lots of the Ealing Comedies. Movies I can watch over and over again are Casablance, Sims - "Christmas Carol", "Dr. Strangelove" Movies I have spent ages trying to get the video include: "Picnic at Hanging Rock" - probably the most 'lyrical' for me if that makes sense and you know what I mean, "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" - worth it for the first 10 minutes alone, and also by Herzog - "Nosferatu" Add films like "Usual Suspects" and "Resevoir Dogs" and the list goes on! I'm sure I've missed a lot and people above have mentioned many I enjoy. 2001 is the film I've seen the most but I haven't seen it for years. Rana |

From: Ely Best (and Saddest): Matewan (Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones), the Field (Richard Harris, Brenda Fricker, Sean Bean) Worst: the Piano, the Red Violin (I walked out of Violin--it was so bad that all the "dramatic" lines literally sounded like joke punchlines). I don't know that I think it deserves "worst" but I hated American Beauty. Funniest: Alice's Restaurant Massacree (playing guitar and kazoo at the same time!!). I also have a soft spot for Bean--we think my dad is the missing link between Rowan Atkinson and Jim Varney. Another movie that I really like even though it isn't particularly good is Falling Down (Michael Douglas? One of the Douglases, at least). Sad and funny at the same time. |

In the Brothers Grimm version, she jumps off the castle and dies--by that time I was really looking forward to it. Actually, we declared a family-wide boycott on Disney for historical butchery when they tried to make Gettysburg a theme park. My kid brother and his fellow Civil War reenactors were almost literally up in arms over that one. I think it's the one issue where the North and South might have united . . . |

They also did a concert in Moscow with the Red Army choir or something which came out as a film - haven't seen it. Mtechosin, You're right it has to be the Alistair Sims B&W version of Christmas Carol (which is why I put it down as Sims - Christmas Carol - might have been missed) - I'll admit it, even now I can't get past the crutches and will Tiny Tim survive part without tears - who said grown men shouldn't cry!! First saw it in a French cinema whilst on holiday, then eventually got it in English back home, and without the dubbing it was even better. Shame they tried to TV-ify with Whoopie Goldberg, but that died after a series, so that's OK. Funniest: Muppets in Space and Demolition Man, both hugely funny films ("President Schwartzenegger?!"). And Waking Ned for the nude motorcyling. Most Influential: What, no-one mentioned Star Wars? Or Terminator? Come on... Most Exciting: Die Hard, no questions. Most Scary: Without a doubt, it's got to be Event Horizon. I can't imagine seeing it at the cinema again, but equally I can't imagine not having seen it - it's got that hypnotic kind of fear like a king cobra. Worst: Too many to count. Grab.

You kind of stagger out, totally overwrought from the continuous drumming throughout the movie, drugged by the vastness of love, convinced of continuity, won over by beauty. But "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Holy Grail" are right up there too; and I'll confess to loving Agnieszka Holland's "Secret Garden." I'll also confess to walking out of The Cook, The Thief, the Bottlewasher, etc; call me a plebe, I just couldn't deal with it. Margaret |

Margaret V., I can understand your reaction. I found The Cook, The Thief, The Wife and Her Lover an extremely important film because it took violence out of the realm of entertainment and put it into its proper scale. It was exactly the right size, no larger and no smaller than real life and hence unavoidably disturbing.
Actually the number of occurences and the severity of those events was actually modest compared to many other films, which do not affect us as profoundly. What made this film ring true, was the fact that the psychological impact and terror of these acts of violence, strike us as intensely as if we had been sitting in our favorite resturant and were to have such an event happen, two tables away from us.
This film does not glorify violence, but clearly expresses how violence and those who embrace and relish its credo, seek to violate and horrify and degrade those who reject it. The sexuality in the film has offended one or two critics who thought it would be more appropriate for Helen Mirren's part to be played by a post-pubescent Hollywood nymph (Siskel and Ebert and I believe one critic in the New York Times).
The fact that two middle aged human beings could find spiritual succor, mutual refuge and a passionate form of expression of their need for one another, may be lost in the intensity of the imagery (some of it beautiful, some of it savage). In many ways, this film was classical tragedy and grand opera presented in a format that would seldom serve either. As much as I admire and respect this film and its maker, I can certainly appreciate that it for many, would be difficult if not impossible to watch to its end. I think we all bring different perceptions and sensitivities to our experience of Film, Art, Music etc. and the important thing is for us to trust our own instincts and sensibilities and be O.K. with that. |
