I've known this song for 30 years, but till I came to Mudcat and saw the lyrics, I never knew that the line should be:
I'd always heard: Must be all that anti-Campbell brainwashing! Wassail! V |

24 Feb 08 - 06:50 AM (#2270869) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Parcel of Rogues From: GUEST,A Scotsman I dont know why everyone talks about the Dubliners performing the this song. It's a Scots song written by Robert Burns and speaks of treachery concerning the act of Union between Scotland and England when the Duke of Hamilton cast his vote in favour of the union due to him being bribed by the English!! Listen to the Corries performing this |
24 Feb 08 - 08:46 AM (#2270902) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Parcel of Rogues From: JJ OMG. I always thought the line was "To mark where England's robbin' stands." One learns something new every day... |
24 Feb 08 - 09:24 AM (#2270920) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Parcel of Rogues From: goatfell this song is about the Scottish MP's at that time and they are rogues in a nation for selling Scottish independence for English gold (bribes). and they still there in Edinburgh now (the Labour, Tory and Lib dem's) are still want Westminster to tell us what to do. |

05 Dec 08 - 06:45 PM (#2509052) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Parcel of Rogues From: Jack Campin It's a Scottish song but the tune is Irish - the Orange march "The Boyne Water" (a.k.a. "The Water of Boyne"), which is still sometimes played by Orange marching bands. It has a vague resemblance to David Murphy's tune "Lord Mayo", which seems to date from shortly after the Battle of the Boyne. If the Dubliners did PoR to a different major-key tune, I'd guess it was because they were ideologically motivated to avoid the original. |
06 Dec 08 - 03:16 AM (#2509195) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Parcel of Rogues From: Dave Hanson The Dubliners get mentioned because Luke Kelly loved Scottish songs, so The Dubs sang quite a lot of them. eric |
