20 Sep 00 - 10:59 AM (#301372) Subject: Looking for old-timey gospel CD's From: mousethief A group of buds and I want to do some old-timey gospel singing, and are looking for some material. Can anybody suggest a CD or two? TO give you some idea of what we're looking for, is anybody familiar with the song "Turn Your Radio On"? That's the sort of thing we'd like to do. Not full-blown hymns, or spirituals per se, but stuff with a lot of nice harmony with lyrics that sound a little old-fashioned? Hopefully not all by the same composer.

Other than that I've enjoyed the Tony Rice and Ricky Skaggs "Rice and Skaggs" CD. A lot of old bluegrass gospel material included. |

My high-minded liberal intellectualism won't let me sing this stuff during church services, although I confess that I'll occasionally do some gospel before Mass. It's so darn much fun to sing. I guess my three favorite gospel albums are Angel Band, by Emmylou Harris; On Praying Ground, by Doc Watson; and the (mostly) a cappella gospel album called How Can I Keep From Singing, by Marley's Ghost. It's really hard to choose, though. I'd also recommend recordings by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver; and the gospel stuff by the Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers is really a lot of fun (I love their bass singers). If you like black gospel, try the Fairfield Four and the Golden Gate Quartet. Oh, I love this stuff. -Joe Offer- |

If you want to go deeper, one of the loveliest albums around is Various Artists 'Kentucky Gospel 1927-1928' Document DOCD-8013. It includes the complete recordings of Alfred G. Karnes - which warm Rick Fielding's soul. The French label Fremeaux & Associes has a glorious double CD set 'Country Gospel 1929-46' FAO55. It ranges from the Carter Family to Hank Williams and includes gems such The Anglin Twins 'Just Inside the Pearly Gates', Carl Story 'My Lord Keeps a Record', Jimmy Davis 'There's Evil in Thee Children' etc. There is also a beaut double album by Ralph Stanley 'Saturday Night & Sunday Morning' Freeland Recording Company CD 9001. It is a gathering of Ralph Stanley's friends to make music. The 'Sunday Morning' CD is all gospel. Friends include Bill Monroe, Alison Krause, Ricky Skaggs, Larry Sparks etc. Skaggs leading 'The First Step to Heaven' is one of my all-time favourite gospel performances. Cheers, Stewie. |

They recorded dozens, probably hundreds of gospel songs, and my two latest favorites are "Jordan" and "He Said If I Be Lifted Up." Ralph has over 150 albums, and many of them are all gospel. Also, many bluegrass bands do the occasional all-gospel album, as well as a few gospel tunes on their regular albums. There are many good ones. Groups like The Nashville Bluegrass Band ("To Be His Child"), IIIrd Tyme Out (great version of "Life's Evening Sun"), Dry Branch Fire Squad, etc. Also, find the Albert E. Brumley book, "Olde Time Camp Meetin' Songs" for just the kind of thing you're looking for. |

22 Sep 00 - 02:11 PM (#303232) Subject: RE: BS: Looking for old-timey gospel CD's From: mousethief Our hymns and chants at church (Russian Orthodox) tend to be in very tight harmony (SATB), often coming together in an inverted triad with bass and alto singing the bottom note an octave apart, soprano singing the middle note, and tenor singing the top note but in the octave below the sopranos. But last night at choir practice we got a new one (well, new to us) from Carpatho-Rusyn origins, with a VERY broad harmony. The basses were scraping the bottom of their range, the sopranos the top of theirs, and the tenors were split in two, a fourth apart. Sounded very much like Sacred Harp/shape-note harmony. Everybody really liked it. I told them about the local shape-note monthly singalong and some said they might come.

It was early in the morning, on my drive to work. I added my harmony and "got down" with the music and it made my day. Yep, would highly recommend Doyle Lawson. Many of the bluegrass cd's have "guest" artists on them, i.e., Doc Watson, Tony Rice, David Grier, Bela Fleck, etc.; so it makes the money you invest into cd's more than worth the cost. |

It's called "Memories That Bless and Burn" and it will put chills down your spine. Also, make a point of seeing them on a Sunday morning at a bluegrass festival. Their Gospel set is wonderful. I caught them at a festival where they opened up on Sunday with their Gospel program immediately followed by Doyle Lawson's Gospel set. It was like a year of Sunday mornings at church rolled into 2 45 minute sets! Rich |

I've heard some groups with such tight harmonies that you really have to strain to listen and see that there are no instruments involved...Caan't add much to the suggestions, all have been pretty much made, but am sitting here rigth now listening to some 1927 - 1930 Carter family...Good stuff...sing it Maybelle!! |

Several old songs and the singers are wonderful old guys, including one preacher I think. A great bass voice!
