Fortunato, it is sexist. You'd think I could get as much attention as Branwen, since I'm the only one there in a skirt, but all the boys want to flirt with her. Mimosa |

21 Sep 00 - 07:05 PM (#302644) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Waylon Fan Well, last night was kinda frustrating. There were maybe 2 or 3 songs that I'd played before (mainly those that Branwen and I started out together - World Turned upside down, Spanish Ladies). But I had no problem following the guy across from me with the guitar and harmonica. It also seems like there are to many chiefs and not enough Indians. When it came time for a lead, everybody tried to play one - the harp guy, Mr. whistle, etc... Mr. whistle over there needs to get over himself. A little bit goes a long ways. After a while all those whistle tunes start to sound alike - kinda like blues harmonica. Anyways, the beer was good. Not sure if I will be back again. I did have a good time, even though the above doesn't give that impression. |
21 Sep 00 - 07:12 PM (#302649) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,The new guy last night Hey all.. I had an absolute blast last night (even if i was probably being one of the above mentioned "chiefs"... hope I wasn't being a session hog!!) That was one of the friendliest sessions that I've been to in ages. You made the new guy feel welcome...shy retiring flower that i am... thanks again, and I'll be there next time with Bells on.. or at least a bodhran! Jeff |
21 Sep 00 - 07:19 PM (#302654) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 It was great to meet you, Jeff... And i disagree with the above post... I thought everything sounded great, and I had a great time Of course there will be times when two people start a bridge atthe same time, that's what happens in impromptu playing... I really dig your bodhran... I'd love to get one of those.. At any rate, I had a blast, and I hope you'll be back for the next session on Oct. 4th... -Branwen- |
21 Sep 00 - 07:25 PM (#302658) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: guinnesschik *sigh* Sounds like I missed some serious fun. Waylon Fan....sometimes chiefs outnumber Indians. It's what makes a jam session a jam session as opposed to having a band. Just happens that way sometimes. I hope you do come back. I could stand to play fiddle on some Waylon songs, and do a little backing vocals...and I will sit in the corner and be a good little Indian. AND, we'll trade Waylon for "whaling.' 21 Sep 00 - 07:33 PM (#302664) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 thanks for the url, Jeff... Is your drum a 14" or 16"? Also, the site says the drums are available in different "tones"... is yours a specif model or tone? I really like what you had last night... did you get your tippers from this guy as well? -Branwen- |
21 Sep 00 - 07:53 PM (#302678) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt mine's a 16".. thanks for asking...(drum that is!) It's my understanding that he basically has one "model". When I chose mine, most of his drums seemed to be pitched a bit high for me, but I grew to like it. (also it's mellowed in the months that I've owned it.) The tone was a bit off last night as I let the skin dry out a bit. I need to care for it better. Albert sells most of his drums by mail/email. The advantage of living here in town, is that you will get some choice. He's only doing the red finish for now, but each drum is unique in look as well as sound. End of commercial. 27 Sep 00 - 10:01 AM (#306493) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: JedMarum I can't make it - but I am planning on being there next week! RedCelt - if you're looking for a good session, ya gotta make the Sons of Hermann Hall jam on Thursday night. It's wide open, style wise, but they say "the only thing electric is the campfire'. It's gotta be the best one in Texas. There is normally two or even three rooms goin' and some great pickers, singers, songwriters. It's a really good bunch of folks. You might give it a shot, some Thursday (every Thursday, starting about 8). |
27 Sep 00 - 11:53 AM (#306572) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Jed, I've been interested in that one since I heard you talk about it years ago at the quill sessions. I've kind of stayed away because it sounded waaaaay above my level, and I expected to be audience. I enjoy just sitting back and listening to a jam as much as anybody, but just playing audience hasn't been enough for me to clear the decks on a Thursday. Aaaaaanyway, I still want to make it if only to hear/see you and possibly young Jeff if he's around. Mimosa- good point on clearing it first. I hadn't thought that far, though Nick is one of the people who mentioned the off wednesday possibility to me. I was on such a "session-high" from my first session in months that I didn't pay attention, and don't exactly remember what he said. It probably would be a good idea to check. I think that I'll just drop in tonight with no expectations and see if anything starts (though my bodhran and song books just might sneak into the truck and come along for the ride) Jeff |

04 Oct 00 - 03:11 PM (#312085) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Bardford Sorry if this is an inappropriate interjection into this thread, but- where can I go in Dallas Sat. Oct 21-Tues Oct 24 for live folk/celtic/ type music? Or a good pub? Hoping to test drive Albert's bodhrans while I'm there. I'd love to check out the Wed. session, but that, alas, is not in the cards. I'll be in the market district, if that's any help. Thanks in advance. |
04 Oct 00 - 03:45 PM (#312109) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Jed at Work Bardford - on Oct 21 you can't go wrong by visiting YOBB in Fort Worth (the pub in this thread). We'll in Oklahmoa during that time. Try the Dubliner on GREENVILLE AVE in Dallas 214-818-0911, or the Emerald Mist in Dallas at 972-671-6478 or you might try Poor Davi'ds Pub in Dallas at 214-821-9891. There's sure to be good music at all of these clubs. Poor David's is one of the nation's oldest and bets folk music venues. It's a bit of a dive, but has a great sound system, books top notch acts and has some wonderful history! Best of luck!

06 Oct 00 - 06:57 PM (#313808) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) This is gonna sound dumb but does this thread refer to a real session or is it a virtual on a la Mudcat Tavern sorta thing? Either way, Branwen, I'd recommend the 14" Albert bodhrán. It takes a little getting used to at first, but once you do, you can do anything with it that you can with a 16" drum. What's more, it seems like the tone control is more dramatic. You have to move your left hand more to achieve the same amount of tone variation with a 16" bodhrán. Don't get me wrong, either size of Albert's bodhráns is a fine drum. The 14" is just a personal preference. of mine. I use a foot stool for my left foot. This raises up the playing surface, while still allowing me the smaller drum. Slán, Rich |
10 Oct 00 - 12:21 AM (#315256) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Rich, It's a real pub in Ft. Worth, with a great friendly session. Amateur that I am, I'm well balanced by some good (and tolerant) musicians. I went with one of Alberts 16" drums to wean myself off of my 18" Paki learner model. I had thought that I had awfully big paws to be stuffing into a 14", but I completely agree on the sound. After listening to both, I can say that it's entirely a matter of personal preference. *Sigh* It's the off week for the every-other week session... rats! I've been living at work since last wednesday and could use a night of yeling my voice to shreds...(it's not much, but it's what I call singing...) I'll be looking forward to seeing all and inflicting my music again soon, Jeff |

I will be doing the first long set solo and with my friend Cliff Hale, bluegrass picker extraordinaire(sorry for the spelling). The second long set will be a song swap with my good friends Michael Harrison (Celtic/Folk performer) and Karen Riccarde with Eammons Kitchen backing us up. We've put a bit of work into this show, with new tunes and arrangements, but - lest you think we're cheating too much, I promise you most of the evening will be our usual "seat of the pants" performance! Please think about coming over to Dallas for the show. I know it's a weeknight, I know it's a hastle driving, parking, etc ... but I promise you we'll make it worth your while! The show starts at 9PM and goes 'til we stop (close to midnight). Poor David's is at Please come out to see us, if you can. We'll have a great time, and we'll be back to YOBB session next time around.

I'm a bit under the weather and Poor David's is a little too far, and a bit too much hassle for me tonight... I might try and make it out to YOBB for a bit, since it's pretty close to home, but I won't be in very good voice, and probably won't stay very late. I know you guys will have a great show... sorry I can't make it. -Branwen- |

(Celt that is!) Did our thread die? Ah, well, I hope to make it to session this week. Last week I didn't leave work until after midnight (RatsaFrackinServerCrashes), so I missed the Poor D's gig. How'd it go? YOBB tomorrow.. see everyone there who's gonna be there! Jeff. |
28 Nov 00 - 10:02 PM (#348006) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Sarah Sorry to interrupt Session talk, but this is the thread where I'm most likely to find the answer to my burning question: Anybody know the name of this year's host hotel for the NTIF 2001? Their website just keeps telling me that negotiations will be completed shortly. Some of us, from WAY out of town, have to make plans in advance, so it sure would be nice to know. Hi, Jed. Really enjoyed you guys at the Amarillo fest. Regards to the entire Kitchen from Fluffy. Sarah |
29 Nov 00 - 12:59 PM (#348360) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Matt Woodbury/Mimosa I got to Poor David's about 10:00, enjoyed the show with Eammons Kitchen. Enjoyed the show, and had way too much room to move around. Mike, the whistle player was there, he said something about trying to put together a Sunday afternoon session mid-cities.
I have a Dress Rehearsal for the opera tonight, won't be able to get to session for a while, like February. Gotta do the job. If we're going to keep this thread up, it's about time for a new one. Mimosa |

Thanks to Mike and Mimosa for coming out to Poor David's Pub. We really really appreciate your making the show! EK is playing at YOBB this Friday night. Please come on out, if ya can! 29 Nov 00 - 06:02 PM (#348533) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Sarah Well, I guess I should have guessed the secret identity of one "guinnesschik" immediately...Wish I could come down for the party, but it's still a bit far for an evening's drive. However, I promise to hoist at least one Guinness on Friday night to honor the occassion up here at one end of the state. Happy birthday, Karen. Sarah |
29 Nov 00 - 06:23 PM (#348548) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Guest Sarah, The NTIF hotel is ramada Plaza again. Their number is 214-421-1083. You'll need to speak to their reservations or sales people (not the front desk) to get the festival rate. Please make sure that you tell them that you're with NTIF. Last year, I understand that not enough people did so to meet the hotel contract. Thanks, Jeff Gard Assistant Coordinator for Stages. |

29 Nov 00 - 07:28 PM (#348585) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: GUEST,Sarah Thanks Jeff! Yeah, that's why I try to stay at the host hotel -- so the festival can get those free rooms. Well, it sure isn't to get extra sleep! Am trying to get a contingent together this year. Gawd, watch out -- Amarilloans in the big city! (I usually pretend I don't really know most of them...that way I'm still on the loose when it comes time to find bail money.) Sarah |
02 Dec 00 - 02:50 PM (#350274) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Karen, Jed... I feel horrible. I completely forgot that you guys were going to be at YOBB last night... I had planned to be there, but it totally slipped my mind and I spent last night sitting on the couch watching TV and letting my ass spread. Spending the evening celebrating with all of you would have been much more worthwhile. Please accept my humble apologies. -Branwen- |

Mimosa - I sent you some thoughts on other session in town to consider - I am sure there are folks around who know of others. I'm not up on all the sessions in town. |
10 Jan 01 - 05:49 PM (#372448) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: Branwen23 Just a heads up, guys... It has been mentioned that we might have a bigger turnout at the session if it were held on Thursday rather than Wednesday... Apparently there are quite a few people who play in local bands who would probably come, but can't because their bands practice on Wednesday. I talked to Nick yesterday about changing the session day to Thursday, and he's going to check the numbers and let me know. It may turn out that Thursday won't be a good day for Nick... Apparently it tends to be a rather busy day at the pub... But we'll see. Just wanted to post it so that anyone who's interested knows what's going on. For now, of course, we'll continue to meet on Wednesdays. -Branwen- |
10 Jan 01 - 06:00 PM (#372454) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: JedMarum I'm not sure Thurs's any better for me. I always enjoy his passion for playing! Mimosa - you were missed! I hope to make a few more sessions in the not too distant future. 07 Jun 01 - 11:14 AM (#478378) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: RedCelt Hey Gang~ It's at least trying to go every week. I think we're fighting the season of "other things to do". Attendance has been a wee bit sparse of late, and there has been talk of taking it back to an every other week thing. I hope it's just warm weather and daylight all evening long pulling people away. Steve, Branwen and I were talking last night about how we might spread the word a bit, and hopefully get some new blood. Anyone got any ideas? For anyone new to the thread, we're talking about a Wednesday night session in Ft. Worth at a cozy local pub, Ye Olde Bull and Bush. The pub is at 2300 Montgomery street. Call them at 817-731-9206 for directions. The session starts about 7-ish (7:00 musician time means sometime before 8:00), and usually lasts until midnight or so. We run the spectrum of talent from professional and talented amateur all the way down to me, the rhythym-impaired Bodhran abuser. The Craic is grand, the beer is cold, and the music is abso-bloody-lutely terrif! Slan Go Foill, Jeff |

02 Apr 02 - 09:14 AM (#681450) Subject: RE: Dallas/Ft Worth Session II From: JedMarum nosluap57 - well you might find this Fort Worth session, while a bit of a drive - is well worth while. Great folks, nice pub, good music, lotsa fun! I participated quite a bit when I was not working so much - even though the drive was close to an hour each way. BUT - there is a great session at the Sons of Hermann Hall in Dallas every Thursday night beginning about 7:30 - but really getting going by 9. The session burns all night! Or I should say sessions. They typically have two or even three rooms going. The predominant music style is Texas acoustic - but absolutley anything goes. There will be lots of guitars, a few mandos, a fiddle or two - then maybe a banjo, an acoustic bass, a harmonica, and you can count on all of 'em playin at once! BUT it's fun. It's a good group of people and they have a great time. There are a capella singers almost every week. You might wanna check it out - even if you just listen in the first week.. |
