Then my dad ruined it by telling me this story: There was some labour benefit he was volunteering for years ago, at the H.H.H. Metrodome, and he took a job in the kitchen for the day. As my dad was throwing away unused hotdogs, on buns, the head hot dog guy walks up, and says 'Whoa, what're you doin'?! Those are good hotdogs!' He then proceded to take a dog out of the trash, made an 'ok' sign with his hand, stuck the end of the sausage part in the small 'ok' hole, and pulled the hotdog through it, scraping the bun away. He then threw the meat into a bin of fresh hotdogs. My dad left in disgust, and I've never been back. Yup. He's a black and tan dachshund, a true gentleman of leisure who has mastered the art of doing absolutely nothing to such perfection that he has almost become a sort of stationary art object...except when a stranger arrives. He uses Esskay weiners and puts his own special Coney-Island type sauce on them. Yep, just put the sauce, mustard, ketchup and onions on and you have eatin' pleasure. Esskay is a Baltimore brand made by the Schluderberg and Kurdel Company ("S. K.", get it?). The dogs are also sold in stores and they grill well, but you can't beat Harry's. But ya' know, hot dogs are such basically schlock food to begin with, not to mention their allowable 2% content of floor sweepings, hair, and rat excrement, that the "good" concept for me somehow translates into BAD. I can buy some Ball Parks, great buns, coney sauce, kraut, slaw, relish......the works right?....and somehow I keep going back to those things that they sell at Ohio State football games. The indeterminate frank is possibly cooked and then thrown into an oversize bun, wrapped in a wax paper type stuff (you know the stuff...you try to wipe off the mustard with it and end up being covered in mustard flavored Coppertone Quick Tan). This "thing" is then stacked in a steam drawer until needed for sale. I think they make all of these up at the beginning of the season and keep them hot and soggy right through the Michigan game. You buy one or two and walk over to the condiment table (what a mess those are....a whole other thread) where you try to separate the paper, bun, and frank, so you can apply some of that pale tan mustard of undetermined parentage. I'm a vegetarian as well, but I must be missing something when it comes to vegetarian hot dogs. I've had all sorts of seitan prducts that were delicious, including a convincing pepperoni roll and mock chicken teriyaki. I've made some delicious meals that people raved over until I told them it was tofu and then had the say "I didn't like that". I like Boca-Burgers and Harvest Burgers (especially the Italian style variety), but somehow, Veggie dogs just never did it for me. If anybody can recommend a good tofu dog, I'd appreciate it. And the more condiments, the better. Sometimes I just eat them cold out of the package when I'm in a hurry. It's a good source of quick protien, and they're not bad that way. Also "Not Dogs" are pretty good. They're less chewey than Tofu Pups, so you have to "nuke" them (microwave) or put them in a toaster oven or something to have a good skin on them. Again, the trick is lots of condiments. I stay away from all Morningstar Farms products. Too much junk in them. Carol |

The key was the basic ingredients, dogs and buns. There were several local makers of dogs and buns and the competition was fierce. I remember preferring Sahlens rolls but I cannot remember which dog brand I liked. I know for sure it was not a national brand. Buffalo weiners, no matter what the brand, left all national products in the dust. Flavor and texture to die for. |

From: Little Hawk I really hope to meet Ernie, the "weiner dog" one of these days...I love friendly dachshunds...I will bring Ernie a piece of a real weiner, which should arouse him out of his customary torpor in no time flat! I know dachshunds...they will eat till they fall down and die, if given the opportunity. Well, at least till they feel like they are going to die...we had to take Oscar to the vet one time and get his stomach pumped out after he devoured about 8 pounds of old rib bones and bacon grease he found in someone's garbage...it was pretty awful. After a couple of days resting, however, he was all ready to do it again at a moment's notice. No self-control whatsoever! |

Many years ago, I played at the Lum's in East Lansing, I believe it was on Wednesday nights. I also believe that the hot dogs were steamed in beer (as was everyone there). From: WyoWoman The very, very best hot-dog like edible I had, now that I think about it, actually DOES have a music connection -- even a BLUES connection. I used to get hot links at a little place on Central Avenue in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Johnson's Rib Hut's hot links were wonderful sausages that the owners made themselves, meaty and flavorful and smothered in the absolute best barbecue sauce. Slap 'em on a bun, slather some of that sauce on top and oooh BAYbe are you talking tasty. I worked at the time as an arts writer for a newspaper there and when I did a telephone interview with Ray Charles, he mentioned how sick he got of food on the road, that it didn't have any flavor and the main thing he minded about being on the road was just the sameness of the food. And at the end of the interview, he said he'd enjoyed our talk so much he wanted me to come backstage to visit him after his gig. So, before the performance, I went by Johnson's Rib Hut and got two orders of hot links, with the fixin's, which I carefully wrapped in aluminum foil, then wrapped in a towel, so it would stay good and hot. Then I put it all down at the bottom of this great big shoulder bag I had and put all my girl-junk on top of it. Security sort of peered in and passed it on by. And after the gig, I went by, met Mr. Charles. We hugged, he kissed me on the cheek, and I gave him the hot link dinner. He said, "Well, Mama, that's about one of the nicest things anybody's ever done for me ... " and we started talking again, but his manager came up and hustled him away. It was a fateful moment. I just KNOW he wanted to ask me to come join his Rayettes and sing "shoop-shoo" behind him while wearing a slinky dress. But I had a date and he had a manager ... It was not to be ... I think Johnson's Rib Hut is now closed. too bad. They truly are the best hot links in the entire world. ww |

Thanks for that memory...there was a Lum's across from the mall in my hometown and we always had lunch there when I was a kid and I always had the two hotdog special...many years ago! Hard to beat Nathan's; it has also been many years since I ate there... also a very cool place in Manhattan is Papaya Gray's; they serve great hot dogs and papaya juice drinks (a la Orange Julius) and there are all these signs talking about how great papaya juice is for the digestion... these days I like 'em with brown mustard and raw onions...yum. But only rarely. |

From: M.Ted The question evoked a lot of interesting, and music related things, for me anyway, because-music and food go together (or they should) and it got me thinking about Kutztown, where, they had and have the folk festival (but it is a different one now, with a different name, the Kutztown Festival having moved to somewhere else) with music and food--Also the Black Angus, at the other Renninger's in Adamstown where the have good, locally brewed beer and dancing to live PA Dutch Music, most market days--My purchases from the stalls at Renningers tended to include records,sausages and such things, and occasional musical instruments-- And then there was the Lum's thing--It isn't stupid to me-- |

From: Joe Offer I was born in Detroit, and I don't remember the neighborhood where we lived in a two-story flat with my uncle's family living downstairs. I must have been very young when we moved to the far northwest part of Detroit, between 7 and 8 mile Road and between Meyer Road and Schaefer Highway. We were one of two Catholic families in a Jewish neighborhood, and my mom would walk with us to 7 mile road to shop for groceries. The stores were mostly Jewish, so we got kosher frankfurters to sample at the butcher shop while Mom was shopping, and of course we got bagels. This is my first memory of the delight of the hot dog - even though the frankfurters were cold when the butcher gave them to us because we were cute kids, they were so good that I remember them more than 65 years later. And then I moved to Wisconsin when I was 9 and had bratwurst, which was another trip to heaven. I kept going back to Detroit to visit relatives, and I think it wasn't until about 1995 thaT I learned that Coney Island Hot Dogs were a "thing" in Detroit - so of course I had to try them, and I have to have them every time I go to Detroit now. And then I married into a Rhode Island family in 2002, and I discovered "hot wieners" (New York System Hot Wieners) the first time I visited my new in-laws in Rhode Island. I couldn't believe how good they were. They're on a steamed bun, with onions and celery salt and a meat sauce that isn't quite chile. And they're cheap, and amazingly delicious. I've been to Coney Island, but I couldn't find place to park so I didn't get out of the car and was not able to sample a Coney Island Red Hot. But I know for a fact that hot dogs in Detroit and Rhode Island are terrific. Now, don't to to Wisconsin for hot dogs (although the ones at Usinger's in Milwaukee are darn good). But if you're in Wisconsin, eat the bratwurst and don't waste your time on the hot dogs. But if you're in Rhode Island or Detroit, eat hot dogs. And when you get tired of hot dogs, I can lead you to some great Polish restaurants in Detroit (Hamtramck) and in Rhode Island. New York System Hot Wieners, Rhode Island. |

We'd boil up a bunch of them during the Redskins games and wash them down with National Premium. I put mine on a plain bagel and heaped on Katz' cole slaw and that was it. Hebrew National dogs were also pretty good as was their knockwurst. Nowadays it's Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs on a whole wheat bun. They taste kind of neutral so you need various combinations of diced Vidalia onions and Vidalia onion relish, Gulden's Spicy Brown, kraut and picalily. |
