One gives the other a letter for his family and asks him to take it to them if he dies. The other soldier also gives his friend a letter with the same request. As it turns out they both die and the families back home never got to read their last letters . . . Can you help me? |

27 Sep 97 - 03:59 AM (#13314) Subject: Words to Civil War song From: stimpy@eartling.net My sisters and I are looking for the complete version of a song that our grandmother sang to us many years ago. She always called it "The Soldier's Song." Below are the only lyrics that we can recall. Just before the last fierce charge Two soldiers drew their reign With a parting word and a touch of the hand Ere they might not meet again One had blue eyes and curly hair Nineteen but a month ago Red rosy cheeks and a dimpled chin He was only a boy, you know The other was tall, dark, daring and brave His faith in this world was dim But all the more, he trusted one She was all the world to him --------??? ??????? The tall dark man was the first to speak Saying “Charlie, my time has come “We’ll ride together into this fight But you’ll ride out alone So promise a little more trouble to take For me when I am gone |

27 Sep 97 - 06:17 AM (#13320) Subject: RE: Words to Civil War song From: Joe Offer I think it's "The Last Fierce Charge," which is in the database, with a tune. Use the search box in the upper right corner of most pages at this site, and enter a distinctive word, or a phrase in brackets, from the song. for this one, I entered [my time has come], and it came up. It's a good song - I hadn't noticed it before. -Joe Offer- |

Title unknown; first line: "I wish to be a soldier boy said Little Herbert Lee". Later in the song is mentioned "Melvin Snow." That's how Herbert Lee Gaylord and Melvin Snow Gaylord were named when they were born 3 Mar 1871 in Geneva, NY. |
