Paul Geremia Video

This subject came up in the Dave Van Ronk thread and some thought it should have its' own thread so here goes. Jeff Kenney, who produces the Dave Van Ronk unauthorized web page, has recently released a one hour video on bluesman Paul Geremia. I assume Jeff thought it would be unethical to use Mudcat to promote his work so I'll do it for him. Jeff has produced a very professional documentary on the life and times of Paul. About half of the video is concert footage of Paul and the other half is Paul talking about his life past and present. If you are a fan you will find this video very enjoyable. This is obviously a labor of love for Jeff and I can assure every one they are quite safe doing business with him. I don't do the blue clicky thing but if you search dave van ronk unauthorized you should find it with no problem.

This went over like a lead balloon. I'll refresh it once to see if any one salutes. On a related note, last summer Paul taught a one week seminar at something called Augusta Heritage Fest. Has any one attended this?

I've been to Augusta three times. It's wonderful. It's at Davis & Elkins College, in Elkins, West Virginia. Start a new Augusta thread and you'll get a thousand replies.

One of my goals is to go to the Augusta "summer camp". Maybe this year I will get there. BTW, I am a personal friend of Paul, and he has been an excellent bluesman since he was a teenager. He plays a lot at Billy Goodes in Newport, so get on down there.

I would heartily endorse the above accolades for Paul Geremia. I first saw him in England at the Cambridge Folk Festival, in the Guitar workshop, on stage with such luminaries as Stefan Grossman, David Bromberg and Leo Kottke. They were all superb, but Paul Geremiah's was the outstanding performance.

I'd like to add to it but I don't have anything to contribute (although I LOVE Paul Geremia). Keep it afloat so I can keep reading.

I went to Augusta's Blues Week this year. Paul compilmented my playing (I was honored).
He said to me one late Thursday night, "The way I see it, I'll have plenty of time to sleep when I'm dead." One of my favoret quotes from this summer!

I have listened with such pleasure to Paul Geremia for years. It wasn't until just recently that I realized he lives just up the road from where I am. Now that I have access to his schedule, Paul's Home Page , I will be sure to catch a show.

I'm waiting for him to play NYC again. I saw him at the Bottom Line in 1999 and at Cafe Lena, Xmas 1998. Is there any TAB of his stuff available?

What is it like sitting down and playing with one of your heroes? I think I would be totally intimidated. What level of playing were the other students at?

C'mon now. I thought we were going to have a permanent Paul thread. It would be a welcome island of soulfulness in this sea of inanity. All it would take is one post per day. Has anyone else seen this video?

Does anyone know where to obtain a CD by Paul Geremia, containing a song possibly titled Skin Games comin' to town? There are few things in this sad old world that bring a song to your heart, but Paul succeeds where many others fail.

The song you're thinking of is "Skin Game Blues," (aka "Georgia Skin Game") which I agree is a great song! An old one, too... We used that one in the video we did, I think in its entirety (if I remember right -- it was a last-minute addition, so I can't recall right off). But it's on his "Gamblin' Woman Blues" cd on Red House...you can get it through cdnow.com or amazon.com or, better yet, through red House's home page at www.redhouserecords.com If you haven't already (and I know Mr. Wirtz is here and there on this discussion forum), check out Stefan Wirtz's Geremia discography at http://www.wirz.de/music/geremdsc.htm It's got all of his album titles, cover art, and track lists for each album -- handy when looking for a particular song! By the way, I have to reccomend Geoff Muldaur's version of that song on hs (sadly out of print) Prestige lp, "Sleepy Man Blues," an excellent album too! I really love his version! A whole new thread could spring up from discussions about Geoff's decision to stay true to the original lyrics of the song and use the "N" word repeatedly. It's kind of a shock when you first hear it, but I have to admit, it adds a startling sort of authenticity, if nothing else.

I came across the tab to Paul Geremia's arrangement of Silver City Bound in a publication 3 0r 4 years ago and have been trying to find it again with no luck.

There is tab to Diggin' In Uncle Sam's Backyard in a back issue of Acoustic Guitar magazine. The specific issue can be found on the AG website.

Little known fact. When he was a boy, Paul wanted to play the pedal steel guitar.

An interesting sidebar - the cover art for "Gamblin' Woman Blues" (and several other of Paul's LPs and CDs) was done by Eric Von Schmidt, who should also have his own thread.

Just a belated note of thanks to "LDave" here, who posted reccomending the video we did. He also turned me onto to Mudcat originally, too, so thanks much! Didn't even see his posting about our Paul Geremia video until now, don't know how I missed it! At any rate, thanks!

I got this video in the mail a couple of weeks ago, but just got around to watching it tonight. Good use of the last hour. Highly recommended for anyone who likes what Paul does. Jeff did a real nice job with this.
