I NEED A DECENT (COSMETICS BE DARNED) ACOUSTIC OR

ACOUSTIC/ELECTRIC 6 OR 12 STRINGER WITH LOW ACTION THAT

STAYS RELATIVELY IN TUNE WITHOUT MUCH HASSLE... I AM

STRAPPED FOR CASH AND HAVE SEVERAL GIGS COMING UP; MY

LAST AXE WAS A LEMON THAT WOULD NOT ALLOW ITS NECK TO BE

ADJUSTED BY ANYONE. I HAVE SOME CASH OR I CAN TRADE FOR A

FIDDLE OR AN OPEN-BACK BANJO OR BOTH DEPENDING ON THE

VALUE OF THE GUITAR BEING OFFERED. PLEASE HELP... I HAVE

NO ONE THAT I CAN TURN TO TO LEND ME AN AXE AND I NEED

THE GIGS CAUSE I NEED THE DOUGH... MY LANDLORD DOES NOT

CARE FOR FOLKSINGING.

DougR, I sure hope so...

Spaw, I can wrangle in the neighborhood of $75 cash which is why a trade might be more profitable for both parties.

I have an old 5 string open back banjo (fair condition; will be a fine axe with some TLC) and a fiddle which is like new in its case.

GP — I won a Cort Earth 200 about 18 months ago and have really come to like it. Play it more than I do my Guild D-40. The Cort is a pretty cheap guitar — probably in the $250 US range, though you could check out their Web site (just type in Cort.com and that should bring it up) and it sounds like a dealer might be willing to do an instrument-cash trade that you could live with. Would be worth a try, anyway.

Me again, GP. Sorry, I lied — or at least guessed wrong about the value of the guitar I won. Checked their site and they have it listed at $398 US. Of course that's LIST price and you can always get things a bit cheaper than that if you shop around.

I'd start by visiting the local stores and pawn shops. Lots of trash, lots of the trash overpriced too, but every now and again you stumble into the good deal and this is far more likely on the less expensive instruments. There are some fine Taks and Yamaha's floating around there that don't rate the big bucks. Most pawn shop owners have a pretty good idea what the high end stuff is worth. You might find a bargain.

Try Elderly. A quick perusing of their used list shows some decent values under $200. The addy is in the LINKS section under "Instrument Related" with a hot link to them. Here it is the easy way....Elderly Instruments

GP ---- We picked up a used student guitar in a local music shop for about $60. It's an Epi, which is made by Gibson, and has quickly become the favorite house guitar, even though Mister and I both have "better" guitars. This particular shop rents/sells instruments to college students, who turn/trade them back in at the end of the year, and the shop sells them for practically nothing. This one is a nylon stringer, but if you have a local shop that rents to students, you may be able to find what you need. Good Luck! ----------Kim

yeah, there's an idea...chain stores like Doo-Wop will rent you a good guitar for a month or more. Depending on the sale price of the guitar, you could rent a Taylor or comparable brand for about $40 U.S./month. Part of the rental price goes towards purchase if you decide to buy it.

Two classic guitars played by rock star Eric Clapton have been sold by a London auctioneer for a total of nearly œ60,000.

A 1958 Gibson guitar, bought by Clapton in 1968, was snapped up at the Christie's sale by an American collector for œ47,000.

The money raised from the sale of the guitar will go to the Isabel Hospice charity, in memory of blues guitarist Paul Kossoff.

A second guitar owned by the blues guitarist, a 1952 Gibson Le Paul which he was lent for a show 1997 London concert, sold for œ12,925.

But the sales fell short of the world record price of œ313,000 his guitar Brownie fetched last year. Lyrics for the song Absolutely Sweet Marie, written by Bob Dylan in 1966, failed to sell. Also for sale were Noel Gallagher's Epiphone electric guitar (œ2,500 to œ3,500)

John Entwistle's 1979 Wal Pro custom bass guitar (œ1,000 to œ1,500)

Takamine acoustic guitar signed by Pete Townsend (œ6,000)
