A Chevy Belair hints at a Beale Street Gibson. ...a '55 Corvette is a Fender Stratocaster...a '64 T-Bird, a Rickenbacker..." I suppose a '40s Martin would be an old pickup truck and a '20s National steel a Model T Ford? RtS |

Mine wasn't a Landau. White over red, black interior. It was the coolest car I've ever owned, except for the slight problem of the battery boiling over after a few miles and the electric windows getting stuck up when it was hot and down when it was raining. It had a completely rebuilt engine (397 I believe, eight-cylinder) that would pass anything on the road except a gas station. I got it up to 120 mph a couple of times just because I could and I wanted to see what it felt like. It felt like 60 mph in that wonderful machine. If I can find the photo, I'll email you a picture of it (is that obsessive?) (like I care...)So, do you have a guitar that'll make me sound like Fielding? ww |

I'm not seeing a match there, though. Maybe the Chevelle. The Toyota was tinny but that model was rare in the US. In the true spirit of 1970's Japanese cars, it finally got so rusted out and my dad did a load of bodywork on it. It went around in primer for awhile until my uncle was embarrassed when we came to visit and threatened to paint it windows and all if my dad didn't get busy and mask it (uncle owns a sign shop and paints tour buses for Atlantic City). Hmm, the Guild has a repaired back--maybe it's a Toyota after all. |

I have a D28 and although I drive a Toyota Station Wagon, in my mind I am still drivng the Willys Jeep Station Wagon with the fropped-in Ford V8 I first bought when I was seventeen. It would climb walls and convert into a motel room at the flip of a switch! (Just kidding...a little less well-appointed than a motel room...but you get the idea.)

I had just bought one (after not owning a car for about three years) when I got into a disastrous wreck. Some girl ran a light while I was turning left. The car was totalled, I busted my guild D44M (Curly maple sides and back, since repaired by the good folks at the Old Town School), and broke my jaw. And I got nailed for the accident - I was turning and hadn't gottne my insurance yet. I paid $500 for the car (a lot of dough for a full-time folkie in 1972) and drove it for less than a week. |

I've got a 1996 Volvo 850 wagon and a Running Dog sycamore & spruce acoustic. Or maybe it's the Epiphone Dot that matches the car*, or the telecaster model (Samick Ray Benson -- curly maple capped body & three pickups -- not a real tele), or the 1942 Martin, or the 1943 Orpheum archtop (made by Kay). Whatever, it isn't the Valco-era National "solid-body" with the 22" scale and the blue house-paint finish. That one matches my sister's first car, a 1954 Chevy two-door.
