BS: Halloween in Ireland

Hurrah! It's official, I'm going to be in Ireland from Oct. 28 - Nov. 7. I'm still in the dreamy, wandering, where-shall-I-go-while-I'm-there stage, but I would like to know if anyone can advise me on Halloween. How is it observed, and should I be on the look-out for anything in particular? Thanks! Margaret

Well Margaret, over the Hallowe'en, I'll be in Carrick in Donegal at the Fleadh they have there.
I'll mosey on down to Galway after that, I think.

Celebrations vary, Where are you going to be, when you're there?
But I suppose you've asked yourself that one a few times already *BG*

Derry has a big festival, a parade and fireworks on halloween itself and everyone in fancy dress. Among the events in the days before and after halloween are Foyle Folk Club events (contact the Verbal Arts Centre, Bishop Street)and Irish language (some bilingual) events of FĂ©ile na Samhna (contact Conradh na Gaeilge, Great James St)

Brendy, I'll probably be in/around Galway on Halloween (don't I wish I could be at a fleadh in Carrick, too? But the travel partners are anxious to see Kerry so we'll be starting down there and working our way up. But just on the off-chance...what are the dates of the fleadh, and is there any hope of accommodations being available there at this late date?) And shall two mudcatters meet up in Galway, do you think? And do you know if there's good bus service between Galway and Carrick? I'll be without a car after the travel partners peel off from Galway to Dublin.... Philippa, that sounds like an awful lot of fun. Hmmmm, Derry's not all that far from Galway.... and Conrad, thanks for the links. I will be very certain to be careful of my blackberry-eating habits! Thanks very much, all, I appreciate any and all advice, even if it's not about Halloween. Margaret

Derry is nearer to Carrick than it is to Galway! I haven't spent hallowe'en weekend in Carrick for years but I remember it as a very informal affair of pub sessions. Carrick is a small place, west of Donegal Town, east of Gleann Cholm Cille. You can get the bus from Galway via Donegal Town and Killybegs. If you go there, don't miss Sliabh Liag cliffs.

It is, Philippa, I'm just being a stubborn optimist about how much I can fit in to an all-too-brief visit! Not that I want to go rushing around, either, where's the sense in that? Thanks for the bus info. Margaret
