PUT ME IN YOUR POCKET
ELTON BRITT

Two lovers sat one evenin' beneath the pale moonlight.
Tomorrow he was goin' away life's battle for to fight.
He told her that he loved her, that he'd return someday
And take her for his lovin' wife and then he heard her say:

CHORUS: Put me in your pocket so I'll be close to you.
No more will I be lonesome and no more will I be blue;
And when we have to part, dear, there’ll be no sad adieu,
For I'll be in your pocket and I'll go along with you.

That evenin' soon had vanished. The boy, he went away,
And when at last he did return for a happy wedding day,
His sweetheart she had vanished. To heaven she had gone,
But she left to him a photograph on which she wrote this song: CHORUS

I'm searching for the earliest version of this song, written by W. Lee O'Daniel in 1933. I've tracked down many version, most recently on Merle Haggard's Peer Session album. All are slightly diff, with Merle's being the most different. O'Daniel and his band recorded it on Vocalion 4049 in 1937, but I haven't been able to get audio of that recording. As far as I know, this is the earliest and only recording by the composer. Thanks for any help.

I learned this one from Wilf Carter back in the early 40's. If no one jumps in, I'll post the words I know.

There is some interesting biographical information about Wilbert Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel at the MusicWeb Encyclopedia of Popular Music and at The Handbook of Texas Online.

Copied from http://www.allcountry.de/Songbook_Interpreten/Interpreten_C/Carter_Wolf/body_carter_wolf.html (This is the most complete set of lyrics I could find.)

PUT ME IN YOUR POCKET
(Wilbert Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel)

A lover sat one evening beneath the pale moonlight.
Tomorrow he must go away, great battles for to fight.
He told her that he loved her, that he'd return someday
And take her for his darling wife. Then he heard her say:

CHORUS: "Put me in your pocket, so I'll be close to you.
No more will I be lonesome, and no more will I be blue.
And when we have to part, dear, there'll be no sad adieus,
For I'll be in your pocket, and I'll go along with you."

That evening soon was ended. Her lover went away.
And when at last he did return, for the happy wedding day,
His sweetheart she was absent. To Heaven she had gone,
But she left to him her photograph, on which she wrote this song: CHORUS

[As sung by Wilf Carter. Also recorded by Elton Britt, Merle Haggard, the Wilburn Brothers, Montana Slim, Hank Locklin, Jeanette Harper, Benny Berry, April Stevens, Yodelin' Slim Clark, Big Slim The Lone Cowboy, and The Impalas.]

My song book says that W Lee O'Daniels and his Hillbilly Boys wrote and recorded this song long before Elton Britt.Check the handbook of Texas for confirmation

W. Lee O'Daniel and his Light Crust Doughboys, later the Hillbilly Boys, sometime in the 1930's. O'Daniel (no 's') is listed as co-author.
I'll look it up later if no one gets it first.

Guest Gene: Check the FAQ on citation-
The name of the song, followed on the next line by a name that indicates the name of the author.

You should have qualified with: "as sung by ."
Attribution also lacking. Did you transcribe it from a recording, from memory, from a website (give citation), O'Daniel campaign handout, flour cookbook, or other source?

Six years is but a piss in the ocean of time. Dr. Q recommends a good single malt for memory loss. It will either help of make you lose it altogether.

Good summary. Also from Allmusic.com-
The Wilf Carter recording has been re-issued by Bear Family, "A Prairie Legend."
"Put Me in Your Poket" (sic) seems to be the Britt release.

You guys are a riot. I'm one of those who doesn't care who did it first, or who writ it... All I know is my mom sang it to us when we were kids... Every night, she'd sit by the window, play her guitar, and sing us to sleep. And this was one of the songs she'd sing. Well, she died last week, and I'd like to sing a few of "her songs" at her memorial service, and I didn't remember all the words to it. All I can remember is her clear bell-like voice, and this beautiful little song. Thanks, guys.
