I live in S Fl and I heard a song called I know What Love Is. It's perfomed as a gospel acapella tune and it's brilliant! I just don't know who this is and where I can purchase a copy. Can anyone help?

It appears that this was performed by Leroy White. His website is here (click). The reference to the song is on this page (click).

Well, I hope someone comes up with it because it's now driving me nuts as well. I know it, but can't place it. I've never heard of Leroy and, judging from his site, I don't think I want to.

I have a recording of it somewhere, but it's hard to know where to look - I reckon it's bluegrass or country. Seldom Scene, Tim O'Brien, Robin and Linda Williams is where I'll start, but it could be Gram Parsons and whoever. I can hear that line in my head and it sounds like something that could have come from Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and sung by Gram and Emmylou. Help!

Now that I look at that again, I don't think that's the one. I saw a reference to southern Florida there, but didn't look at it too closely. Oops.

I found the one I was looking for. It may be what you want, but it's not acapella. The song is called 'The Way Love Is' and it is written by Hugh Moffatt. The first couple of verses go:

I've been down and I've been lonesome
I've been around and I've been home some
When I say that I love you
I know what love is

I love you and my love is true
And I know that you love me too
I don't worry 'bout tomorrow
I know what love is

I have it on a few Moffatt albums - 'The Way Love Is' Columbia, 'Live and Alone' Brambus and 'The Wognum Sessions' Strictly Country. The last may be what you heard - he is singing with Michel Jansen and Brent Boyer, but it is not acapella. Others may have covered the song.

I hope it's what you want, but I can now get on with other things without it going around in my head.

Cheers, Stewie.

I doubt this is the one you're looking for, but a pop rocker named Howard Jones had a top ten hit about 12 years ago, with a song called "What Is Love".

There's a song by that title by a Boston area (USA) singer-songwriter named Don White. It's kind of a signature song for him, and he has recorded it in a couple of different versions -- one of which is a capella with backing vocals on the choruses. It is a very moving story that follows a woman's life from birth through childhood, adulthood, marriage, children, and death. It completes a circle, with the woman ending up cradled in God's arms, which makes her feel just like she felt when she was a baby girl being rocked to sleep by her parents. I can't remember all the words, but the chorus is:

I know exactly what love is Love is real simple and true Love is this feeling my heart gets When I'm being held close by you

Don White is a very engaging performer who puts a lot of humor in his songs -- you laugh through his whole set, until he sings this one at the end and makes you cry. I hope this is the song you're looking for, but even if it's not, you should check this guy out. If someone knows where he can be found on the web, please post it. Thanks.

I've been listening to the recordings on the web pages given by dwditty. The version I heard on the radio came off the Acoustic Alliance, Vol. 1 CD. He's right on pitch and dead on emotions with great harmony!
