Where did you ever learn Thais? I learned it in 1950 from my room mate in college. never heard it otherwise.

I think (95% sure, I'd say) I learned it as a kid from Dick & Beth Best's 1954 (my birth year) edition of Song Fest, where it appeared with no attribution or copyright notice. The info on the Digitrad copy (which I first saw only a few months ago) was the first hint I ever had that it was neither anonymous nor in the public domain. I'm going to do a little independent research before updating my page in that regard.

Liland, where in the DT did you find the copy with an attribution? I can only find one without. I learned this song from my mother and she was singing it prior to my birth in 1946. However the words we sing are different still and we call our version the Cannibal King. It has no kissy noises in it

Sorry, it was Thais, not A Zulu King, that has an attribution in the DT; I was replying to Allan S's question about where I'd learned Thaïs.

Wow!! I'm so happy to find these lyrics. I looked after an amazing lady from youg age of 100 till she past away at 102. She would sing the first verse and get stumped on the chorus. thanks for having this posted. Bre
