03 Oct 00 - 03:02 PM (#311184) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Victorian songs required From: Malcolm Douglas The term "Victorian" certainly covers a multitude of sins (literally, in many cases) so before suggesting anything I'll ask: Victorians where? UK? Empire? USA? What aspects? politics or day-to-day life? Would your daughter prefer dramatic or sentimental songs? Murder ballads or comic stage songs? Remember that Gilbert & Sullivan and Stephen C. Foster belonged to the Victorian era, which lasted quite a long time. It's a huge field. Malcolm |

03 Oct 00 - 11:59 PM (#311641) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Victorian songs required From: Uncle Jaque I collect a lot of that sort of thing, from 1800 up through the turn of the 20th Century. Give me an idea of what you are looking for and your Daughter's musical ability (some of the old stuff was very sophisticated and ornate) and we'll see what we can come up with. Also, are you looking for something familiar or obscure? (Man, have we ever got obscure!) A really great source is the LEVY online collection if you've got the time to peruse it: http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/advancedsearch.html Or: http://www.parlorsongs.com/parlorsongs.com/about.html I may not get back to this thread, so drop me a PM or EM jsclarke@gwi.net . 04 Oct 00 - 02:29 AM (#311710) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Victorian songs required From: Liz the Squeak Almost anything by Cosmetheka - I say almost, because some of it is quite roood! Also, some of the stuff from the Good Old Days era - ancient UK TV show - only a bird in a guilded cage, that sort of thing. Faber & Faber publish a thing called the Great British Songbook, which regretably has no tunes in it, but most of the songs are learned by osmosis anyway. That has several good Victorian songs in, and some others you might not think were, but are. Good luck! LTS |

04 Oct 00 - 03:47 PM (#312110) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Victorian songs required From: Uncle_DaveO I sing and am a great admirer (or vice versa) of "She's Only a Bird in a Gilded Cage." Published in 1900, so it's late Victorian. A good old tearjerker. It's in the DT. Dave Oesterreich |
