03 Oct 00 - 07:41 PM (#311445) Subject: Sam the skull From: Tattie Bogle Hi Mudcatters! How about a collection of cat songs? I particularly want "I'm a cat, I'm a cat, I'm a Glasgow cat, and my name is Sam the skull"- much sung in Scotland as you might guess, but "Nobody's moggie now" (Eric Bogle) also springs to miaownd and might prove mee-useful! One of our dear government ministers, Sam Galbraith gets known as "Sam the Skull" beacuse of his bald heqad and the fact that he was a neurosurgeon in another of his 9 lives!! Thanks Tattie B |

You can hear them say doon Shettleston way Whatever happened to Sam the Skull He had paws in his claws like a crocodile's jaws An' a heid like a fermer's bull You can tell them from me I'm still roamin' free Never a day is dull It might sound absurd, but I'm livin' wi' a burd In a single end in Maryhill. 03 May 16 - 03:18 PM (#3788455) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sam the Skull From: keberoxu At the Glasgow / "Glesga" page at ukpals.com website, there is a comment from songwriter Harry Hagan. I'm copying it in this post. Sam the Skull This song was written after observing the antics of the cat population in the housing schemes in the east end of Glasgow (this was during my time as a painter and decorator with the Glasgow district council). It was first recorded by the folk duo Gaberlunzie and then by Alistair McDonald. Reference to the song can be found in the book "The People's Palace Book of Glasgow" and the lyrics and music in the book "One Singer One Song" published by Glasgow City Libraries. I was brought up in Craigpark in Dennistoun (where the library is) then moved to to Carntyne, went to school in Shettleston, and am now retired and living in Sandyhills (next to St. Pauls Church). I am married to Frances and have two daughters, Carol who lives in East Kilbride, and Julie who lives in Devon. Regards, Harry Hagan Sept. 2004 Then Harry Hagan posted a videotape of himself at home, with guitar, singing Sam the Skull. When a YouTube viewer posted a complimentary comment, Hagan posted a response in the comment section: "I found a tape lying in a drawer I'd made about 3 years ago, and I decided to post it on YouTube. I have suffered a stroke since, my music and my grammar has affected. But I'm fine, Cheers, Harry." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEX7G3MLKpo |

30 May 21 - 05:50 PM (#4108242) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sam the Skull From: Tattie Bogle One of my cat-loving friends hates Eric bogle's song, but then she did lose one of her much-loved cats on the road outside her house to a car that was going far too fast! Joe mentioned the Dundee Doag song: by Steve Inglis frae Dundee, but sadly no longer with us. |
06 Jun 21 - 08:07 AM (#4109026) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Sam the Skull From: Tattie Bogle And yes, Keberoxu, "Nobody's Moggy Now" is in the DT and features on other threads. Just noticed one thing with the chorus of "Sam the Skull" as posted by Bradypus on 6th October 00: it should be "claws in ma paws", not "paws in ma claws" - the latter doesn't make sense. Scabby Doug had it right on 5th Oct 00. |
