Lyr Req: Sam the Skull

Subject: Sam the skull
From: Tattie Bogle

Hi Mudcatters! How about a collection of cat songs? I particularly want "I'm a cat, I'm a cat, I'm a Glasgow cat, and my name is Sam the skull"- much sung in Scotland as you might guess, but "Nobody's moggie now" (Eric Bogle) also springs to miaownd and might prove mee-useful!

One of our dear government ministers, Sam Galbraith gets known as "Sam the Skull" beacuse of his bald heqad and the fact that he was a neurosurgeon in another of his 9 lives!!

Thanks Tattie B

...I've got claws in me paws like a crocodiles jaws and a heid like a farmer's bull. I'm no the kind o' cat that sat on the mat or the kind that ye gie a hug, I'm the kind o' cat that strangles a rat and even the ocassional dug!

Sorry, can't remember the verses:-(

I haven't found the rest of the words written out anywhere, but there are two recordings of it lurking on the web at the moment:

Sam the Skull  by the Oasis Children's group (MP3)

Sam the Skull  by Alistair McDonald (Ra)

Gaberlunzie does a pretty good version of it, don't recall on which of their recordings. (Buy them all--What the heck!)

I have the Gaberlunzie tape (somewhere). I'll post the words sometime soon, unless someone beats me to it.

Ah'm acat, ah'm a cat, ah'm a glesca cat, an ma name is Sam the Skull
ah've goat claws in ma paws like a crocodile's jaws an a heid like a fermer's bull
Ah'm no the kind a cat that sat oan the mat or the kind that ye gie a hug,
ah'm the kind a cat that strangles the rats or even the occasional dug.
Ah roam aroon doon in Shettlestoon where they aw know me by sight
"Here's the Skull, here's the Skull" you could hear them call as they dash intae the night
The polis station doon oor way has baurs oan the windae sull,
They're no tae keep the prisoners in, they're tae keep oot Sam the Skull!

I'll post the other verses tomorrow!

Cheers

SAM THE SKULL

Chorus
I'm a cat, I'm a cat, I'm a Glasgow cat
And my name is Sam the Skull
I've got paws in my claws like a crocodile's jaws
And a heid like a fermer's bull
I'm no the kind of cat that sat on the mat
Nor the kind that you gie a hug
I'm the kind of cat that strangled the rat
Or even the occasional dug.

Well roon aboot doon Shettleston way
They all know me by sight
'Here's the Skull, here's the Skull' you can hear them say
As I vanish intae the night
The polis stations roon oor way
Have bars on the windae sill
It's no tae keep the prisoners in
It's tae keep oot Sam the Skull

Chorus

Well one fine day no so long ago
They all had had their fill
They sent for the RSPCA
To come and catch the Skull
Naebody can get oot when he's roamin aboot
Chasin the weans up a close
_____ on the stairs, scratchin' his _____
An' sittin' there pickin' his nose

Chorus

Well oot came the men aboot half past two
In their wee blue Escort van
Right roon the back, wan had a sack
An' the other had a mallet in his han'
I watched them run roon the back o' the hoose
Then I casually strolled tae the van
I jumped in the seat an' I was aff
Everything had gone to plan.

You can hear them say doon Shettleston way
Whatever happened to Sam the Skull
He had paws in his claws like a crocodile's jaws
An' a heid like a fermer's bull
You can tell them from me
I'm still roamin' free
Never a day is dull
It might sound absurd,
but I'm livin' wi' a burd
In a single end in Maryhill.

Chorus

I forgot to mention - The gaps in verse 2 are guitar twangs on the Gaberlunzie tape, but in live performance they are replaced with 'peein' and 'arse'

At Gaberlunzie's web site, SAM THE SKULL is credited to "Hagen." A couple of other web sites say that's Harry Hagan, who sang it back in the 1970s.

Here's a bit from my friend Scott Gardiner in Edinburgh:

Harry Hagan wrote the words tae StS, and Alastair McDonald popularised it. I prefer the Dundee Dog though. Takes things up a notch.

      I'm a doag, I'm a doag I'm a Dundee Daog, I'm a D-O-A-G doag
I'm fightin mad and a heidcase, and I live up the Lochee Road
Aa the doags roond aboot they've heard o me, they ca me Mental Wull
Ah've killed every cat for miles aroond, and I'm looking for Sam the Skull

At the Glasgow / "Glesga" page at ukpals.com website, there is a comment from songwriter Harry Hagan. I'm copying it in this post.

Sam the Skull
This song was written after observing the antics of the cat population in the housing schemes in the east end of Glasgow (this was during my time as a painter and decorator with the Glasgow district council). It was first recorded by the folk duo Gaberlunzie and then by Alistair McDonald. Reference to the song can be found in the book "The People's Palace Book of Glasgow" and the lyrics and music in the book "One Singer One Song" published by Glasgow City Libraries. I was brought up in Craigpark in Dennistoun (where the library is) then moved to to Carntyne, went to school in Shettleston, and am now retired and living in Sandyhills (next to St. Pauls Church). I am married to Frances and have two daughters, Carol who lives in East Kilbride, and Julie who lives in Devon. Regards, Harry Hagan Sept. 2004

Then Harry Hagan posted a videotape of himself at home, with guitar, singing Sam the Skull. When a YouTube viewer posted a complimentary comment, Hagan posted a response in the comment section:

"I found a tape lying in a drawer I'd made about 3 years ago, and I decided to post it on YouTube. I have suffered a stroke since, my music and my grammar has affected. But I'm fine,
Cheers, Harry."

I suppose that Eric Bogle's lament to the slain moggy
appears on a different Mudcat thread by now.

One of my cat-loving friends hates Eric bogle's song, but then she did lose one of her much-loved cats on the road outside her house to a car that was going far too fast!

Joe mentioned the Dundee Doag song: by Steve Inglis frae Dundee, but sadly no longer with us.

And yes, Keberoxu, "Nobody's Moggy Now" is in the DT and features on other threads.

Just noticed one thing with the chorus of "Sam the Skull" as posted by Bradypus on 6th October 00: it should be "claws in ma paws", not "paws in ma claws" - the latter doesn't make sense. Scabby Doug had it right on 5th Oct 00.
