Could Worried Man be what you're looking for?

Worried Man is one of many with shackles mentioned, I personally like the way Ramblin'Jack Elliot did it best. -Biskit-

Could it be Shackles And Chains by Jimmie Davis ? I know Arlo did this on one of his albums. I'm pretty sure it's in the DT.

"I went down the river, I laid down to sleep; I went down the river, lay me down to sleep. I went down the river, lay me down to sleep; I woke up, had shackles on my feet."

If that's the lyric you're thinking of, it's from "Worried Man" and the Stanley Brothers do a great job of it. The lyrics are on the Mudcat Search.

Lots of possibilities — Odetta's "He Had A Long Chain On," Willie Nelson's "Blackjack County Chain," a country tune (can't remember by whom) "I Got Stripes," and any number of prison songs that refer to chains or shackles. Maybe a little more info would help us pin down which song you're looking for.

"I Got Stripes" is on Johnny Cash's "Live At Folsom Prison" album. But I don't think this is what you're looking for.

If it's Worried Man blues, of course, I sing it but you wouldn't want to hear that! All the old skifflers from the '50s do it, song "trad", probably on a Leadbelly ssomewhere (not near my collection) but the Vipers, Lonnie Donegan etc did it.

Ed McCurdy, to me, is THE definitive Worried Man song. However, I just got a new (to me) old record by The Kingston Trio, which has a version of Worried Man I'd never heard. Nothing about shackles, more about a traveling salesman wondering what his lovely wife is doing at home without him. At the end, woman is necking with one guy with another guy hiding in the closet, and hubby is just walking in the door - and all three men are "worried now, but we won't be worried long!"

SHACKLES AND CHAINS
Jimmie Davis
©1949 Peer International Corp.

On a long lonesome journey I'm going,
Oh darling, and please don't you cry,
Though in shackles and chains they will take me,
In prison to stay till I die.

And at night through the bars,
I gaze at the stars,
And I long for your kisses in vain.
A piece of stone I will use for my pillow
While I'm sleeping in shackles and chains.

Put your arms through these bars once, my darlin'.
Let me kiss those sweet lips that I love best.
In heartache, you're my consolation;
In sorrow, my haven of rest.

And at night through the bars,
I will gaze at the stars,
The plans that we made were in vain.
A piece of stone I will use as my pillow
While I'm sleeping in shackles and chains.

[Recorded by Wilf Carter, Wilma Lee Cooper, Jimmie Davis, Merle Haggard, The Osborne Brothers, Marty Robbins, The Stanley Brothers, Mac Wiseman, and many others.]

Perhaps John Stewart?

Let me go, let me ramble

I don't want to feel the pain

of the rattle and the clatter

of the shackles and the chains.   Mike

That's not so surprising. She posted her request over 9 years ago.

Sorry, I should have called your attention to the fact that I was refreshing an old thread. I usually do that; I forgot this time.

I often go searching for old threads whose requests were never fulfilled. I just enjoy the challenge of looking for obscure old songs.

Shackes and Chains is in the Digital Tradition already.

It differs from the version recently posted in one place:

"And in misery my haven of rest."
                                  v.
"In sorrow, my haven of rest."

Last line of verse #2.

Neither has the phrase "shackles on my feet" that was in the initial lyric request.

The self-same Jimmie Davis, former Governor of Louisiana, also wrote the more famous "You Are My Sunshine."
