07 Oct 00 - 12:12 PM (#314139) Subject: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Lisa Hey guys!! I need a band name for my group as soon as possible. We have a couple of really big jobs coming up (the press releases for the first needs to be out by Monday [Oct. 9])so we need some good ideas soon. We were already planning to change the band name at the first of the year, but with these jobs coming up, we figured now was the time. Here are a few details on our group. We have five members, 4 women 1 man. We perform on a variety of instruments including harp, guitar, fiddle, flutes, percussion, and bass. Our major performance venues are Scottish/ Celtic Festivals across the country. The style of songs we do are the old ballads and folk songs, ancient Celtic hymns and lively fiddle tunes. So please everybody, put your thinking caps on and lets see what we can come up with! Serious names will definitely get first consideration! Thanks in advance, Lisa |

07 Oct 00 - 12:30 PM (#314147) Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Rick Fielding Hi Lisa. Celtic style names aren't my specialty, but remember, once you've got a name, do a "name search" on the net to make sure you're the only band using it. Two friends of mine have had to RE-NAME their bands AFTER their first recording because another band threatened legal action! Rick |

Maybe Elixir as well. That's all I can think of right now. You can always do exercises, like choose a color, tree animal/bird, theme, time of day, and try to work those into a name.

You could go through all the titles of fiddle tunes in O'Neill's Music of Ireland - over a thousand there to choose from. Hey, Cherish the Ladies worked, why not another tune title for a name?
For example, page 124,
Seriously, here are a few I like for band names.
The Threepenny Bit
..... well, you get the picture. Just go through O'Neill's. Alice |

07 Oct 00 - 02:16 PM (#314196) Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Rich(bodhránai gan ciall) Tripping upstairs brings up a good point. A lot of bands tend to use tune titles as band names,. Examples would be Moving Cloud, Roaring Mary etc. It would probably be presumtious to use one of the BIG tunes like the Bucks of Oranmore or Gravel Walk but you probably have enough tunes in youe reperetoire to come up with something. Another good source is to take a name or phrase that can sound perfectly mundane in English, but sounds really impressive in Irish, Scots Gaelic or whatever. A word of caution: I wouldn't use the jig title, "Cailleach na Airgid" as it translates to "the hag with the money" ! On second thought, that might be perfect. Good luck, Rich |

Clishmacclaver might be a bit much but I applaud your creativity!! Seriously though, Avalon and The Hollow Hills were in the perfect vein of what we are looking for. Actually, the name at the top of our list is "Crann Tara"...a Gaelic name for the crossed pieces of wood that were lit and carried to the hill tops as signal fires. Our only concern is if the "burning crosses" brings a bad picture to mind? Any ideas? Lisa |

07 Oct 00 - 05:12 PM (#314273) Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Áine Dear Lisa, In Irish, crann tarra could be translated to mean a tar pole; and besides, there's already an excellent Irish band by the name of Crann. If you're going to be playing to mostly English-speaking audiences, I'd strongly suggest that you give your band a name in English, so your audience will be able to easily remember and pronounce it. Now that I think about it, 'By Monday' is way too close to 'Till Tuesday', so scrap that one. Stick to something with three syllables, in English, and I think you'll be happy. -- Áine |

16 Oct 00 - 05:04 PM (#320114) Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: GUEST,Lisa Hey guys!! Sorry for not getting back with you sooner...we've been on the road. We did decide on a band name (and by Monday, too) so we got it in to the publicist in time. The actual first performance under the new name isn't until November 4th, but I'll let you know how it goes. Okay, the name we decided on was "Crann Tara", despite the controversy! We liked the signal fire aspect so we decided to take the risk. As far as the guest list goes, the BIG ONE on November 4th is at the Mesa Amphitheatre in Mesa, Arizona and, of course, you're all invited!! It will be a 3 1/2 to 4 hour concert with four bands. Leading off...Jimmy Kears (forgive me if I've got his last name wrong) of "Men of Worth" (he's the Irish half), then "The Wicked Tinkers", next a 4 member Irish group from California who's name, I believe, is "Craigiemore", and then "Crann Tara". No pressure there...we just have to close the whole thing! If any of you make it, come and introduce yourself. Again, thanks for all the suggestions!! Lisa

From: Áine I hate to break this to you, Lisa; but, in just a preliminary search on the Net, I found two bands that have the name "Crann Tara". One is a bagpipe band in New England, The Crann Tara Bagpipe Band, Inc., and the other is a band that's been playing/recording for five years or so called Crann Tara (Bill McArthur & Stuart Duncan make up the duo that is known as Crann Tara. They have been entertaining audiences in Scotland and throughout Europe for the past five years.) You might just want to rename your group ASAP after these latest performances. And don't forget to do a search for the name you pick. -- Áine |

17 Oct 00 - 12:42 PM (#320928) Subject: RE: Help! Need a band name by Monday! From: Áine Actually, JTT, that should be Luan (nominative singular) not Luain (genitive singular). You'd use the genitive singular after the word Dé, as in the phrase Dé Luain (literally, Day of Monday). And níos airde means 'higher'. Is airde means 'highest'. But I think either one of your suggestions is a great name for a band! -- Áine |
