Lyr Req: Are They Gonna Make Us Outlaws Again

From: GUEST,caroooo@msn.com

I'm looking for the words to a tune that was on one of Hazel's albums in the early 60's called (maybe) "Are they going to make us outlaws again?" (continues, "is that what it's coming to my friends? I come to see why Pretty Boy Floyd gone and done the things he did....") Thanks.

It's a James Talley song:

ARE THEY GONNA MAKE US OUTLAWS AGAIN (James Talley)

So you never picked no peaches
You never rode no boxcar train
Never worked out on the road gang
Or slept out in the rain
But when you see a good man
Have to struggle, sweat and strain
And when a man can't feed his children
Don't it make you stop and think

Are they gonna make us outlaws again
Is that what it's comin' to my friends
Why, I think I see why Pretty Boy Floyd done the things he did
Are they gonna make us outlaws again

Well, I tell you folks there's trouble
And there's tension everywhere
And everybody's askin', where's it gonna end
But there ain't nobody answered
No, there ain't nobody dared
And I'll tell you folks there's trouble
There's trouble everywhere

Are they gonna make us outlaws again
Is that what it's comin' to my friends
Why, I think I see why Pretty Boy Floyd done the things he did
Are they gonna make us outlaws again

Well, hard times and bread lines
Ain't no sight to see
And when a man is hungry
It ain't no crazy dream
Yeah, the blues is fine for singin'
But it's mighty hard to eat
And them engines won't keep rollin'
If they ain't got that gas-i-leen

Are they gonna make us outlaws again
Is that what it's comin' to my friends
Why, I think I see why Pretty Boy Floyd done the things he did
Are they gonna make us outlaws again

Now there's always been a bottom
And there's always been a top
And someone took the orders
And someone called the shots
And someone took the beatin', Lord
And someone got the prize
Well, that may be the way it's been
But that don't mean it's right

Are they gonna make us outlaws again
Is that what it's comin' to my friends
Why, I think I see why Pretty Boy Floyd done the things he did
Are they gonna make us outlaws again

That sounds like a great song. I have a Hazel Dickens compilation CD but it isn't on there ...

Is "Bear FAmily BCD" the recording? (Sorry for dumbness, if that's a dumb question... )

WW, Bear Family is the record label - it's a German company that reissues heaps of American music of all kinds. It reissued all of Talley's 1970s Capitol material with 2 albums on single CDs. The one that I referred to above actually has Talley's first 2 albums on it: 'Got No Bread, No Milk, No Money But We Sure Got a Lot of Love'/'Tryin' Like the Devil' BCD 15433.

Talley is now reissuing all his LPs on single CDs for his own Cimarron label. I don't know what the story is - maybe Bear Family reissued them earlier without licence. Anyhow, the Bear Family ones are a better buy because you get 2 LPs per CD - 6 of Talley's Capitol LPs reissued on 3 CDs.

WW, I must make a correction to the above. There were only 4 Capitol recordings, not 6. My memory is going. The first 2 are on the CD that I referred to above. The other 2 are on a single Bear Family CD: 'Blackjack Choir'/Ain't It Something' BCD15435. The other Bear Family releases of Talley albums were single albums and from a later period. IMO the Capitol period was his best. You can find these on the Bear Family site:

Bear Family

If you don't want to purchase there, CDNow has 'Blackjack Choir'/Ain't It' and Tower Records can get 'Got No Milk'/'Tryin'' as a special order import to US.

There's a Talley site:

It has a link to Cimarron Records, but it seems only his 2 latest are available. However, there are plans for the reissue of all the others. The latest 2 - 'Woody Guthrie' and 'Nashville Blues' - are fine, but not as good as the Capitols.

Hope that is of assistance.
