Limericks, anyone? Part 2 [6]

The Limerick Thread was too long
(Kind of like catspaw's oversized dong)
So now for the sequel
For all of you people
Who care to define the word "sponned"

Micca complained in the link
That Roger had sponned his wink
But it isn't the tiddle
That's the crux of the riddle
But a line from Goon Show, I think

We once had a mayor in Orillia
Who could bitch and complain fit to kill ya
His name was McCan't
He'd turn purple and rant
Council meetings could not have been silly-ah

Now's he's gone and things seem kind of quiet
Cable TV's no longer a riot
In fact it's so dull
That I play Jethro Tull
And pop pills to enliven my diet

(*explanation: Orillia had a mayor for the last 3 years (I think it was three...it seemed like an eternity!), and his name was Ken McCann (I changed it to "McCan't" in the limerick...as in "can't get along with anyone). During McCann's term of office Orillia City Council became so acrimonious that I am surprised it did not turn into a western-style barroom brawl on at least a couple of occasions. McCann is an aggressive and combative fellow, and he seems to really enjoy confrontation, so things were lively. All of the council meetings were televised on local cable, and some people starting tuning in regularly to watch the hijinks, accusations, veiled threats, outright threats, etc...sort of like a soap opera. McCann looks a lot like the actor who played Lex Luthor in the Superman movies...can't remember his name at the moment. We are now having an election for a new mayor and council, and a couple of personal friends of mine are actually running for council. It should be fun. If they get elected, I pity them. No matter what they do or do not do, they are bound to be attacked for it. Ahh...democracy!)

The Florida weathers turned chilly, I no longer dare
To walk around bare
I'm afraid I might freeze off my willy!

The temperature's sixty degrees,
And the wind whistles 'round through the trees
So I'll hasten to don
all that I can put on

Something got left out! The first verse should rear: The Florida weathers' turned chilly,
Though the cold northern climes think it's silly
I no longer dare
to walk around bare
I'm afraid I might freeze off my willy!

There. Lets try that.

Little Hawk! Are you dissin' Jethro Tull, or was it purely for the sake of the rhyme?!

Hang on! For a moment there I thought perhaps "Jethro Tull" was being equated with boredom, and I was therefore temporarily outraged. But now I see that the playing of said group's music may in fact be an attempt at enlivening things, in which case I humbly apologise.

This ain't a limerick, but my husband sometimes says, A bear sleeps in a bearskin, I suppose; I slept in my bare skin and damn near froze.

I don't know if he made it up or not.

Cute! (If I sleep in my bare skin I can get cold very fast. Particularly when I couldn't find the thermostat in my cabin...)

Yes, I went someplace VERY fun this weekend!!!!!

Sacred Circle Dance Fall Facilitator's Gathering! I brought back many good dances and the music for them. Most of the dances are beautiful but complex, so I won't be sharing them immediately, but I brought back the 'jazz feel' one that I really wanted, as well as a bunch of the other favorites that didn't end up on the Great Lakes Camp CDs.

The food was fantastic, the locale was a beautiful natural setting, with winterized cabins and a great hall, the people are wonderful.......... I could go on.

Life is GOOD!

But Hesperis, if you sleep in your bare skin can't you find another bare skin to curl up with for warmth?

Hi, Fibula...

No, Jethro Tull is not boring. They're actually kind of interesting...pretty unique band, I'd say. I did have some friends who played them a bit too often back in the 70's and I got sort of tired of some of the songs, but I was just using them cos it made a rhyme that worked well.

We could all use a limerick tonight
About something witty and bright
Like the way that old Spaw
Responds tooth and claw
With his sharp and preciptious bite

For he pounces with rapturous glee
On each poem submitted by me
And responds with attacks
Quite regardless of facts
Which equate parts of me with a pea

It's a vile and insidious trait
Causing Catspaw to prattle and prate
He slanders my member
And questions my gender
It's really quite sad to relate

Now I sit here and plot my revenge
Upon this cruel slanderer of men
May his willy fall off
The next time he coughs
And maybe he'll be sorry then!

:-D

Not terrific...but what the heck...it's late and I'm tired. Go, Spaw, go!

Re:"Sponned". Yes, a line from the UK wireless (radio to you )comedy the Goon Show of the 1950s. I guess Micca and I are of an age! It is a nonsense word but usually meant being beaten over the head with an impressive sound effect.
RtS (sorry, I was out most of Friday or I'd have replied sooner)

I like this "Sponned" concept. If I were going to be beaten over the head with something, I definitely would want it to be an impressive sound effect. In fact, I could probably get into using impressive sound effects to pummel one or two people myself!

Take that you fiend! (Sound of cabbage head being pulverized by a Sledge-O-Matic.) On the other hand, my neighbors would probably say I am already doing this every time I play my accordion.

I have been pummelled by impressive sound effects. I would rather be beaten up. At least you can run... or scream in someone's ear so loud that they let you go. (I guess that was me 'sponning' them!)

Sorry to hear that, hesperis.

I guess I wouldn't want them to be loud (or mean)...just impressive.

re "sponned" is also what you are said to have done with your wink in the game of Tiddlywinks if you are kneeling on it or hiding it in some way. Another bit of trivial information.

Re: sponned, the definitions above are correct.
On one ocassion, in the Goon Show,Spike Milligan (as script writer) wanted the sound effect for a sock full of Custard hitting someone on the head.......Pause for a moment while you consider what it must have sounded like......and it might give you a smile that lasts all day
