OK, I know I am a sad git - sat at home watching TV on a saturday but the UK show 'Stars in their Eyes' just had a surprise winner.

Scenario, for those who don't know - Mr or Mrs Nobody get dressed up as their 'lookalike' famous artists and sing a song. Whoever wins gets 10 minutes of fame and then fades back into obscurity. I'm sure there must be a stateside version as well.

Anyway - this weeks winners were SIMON and GARFUNKLE!!! A pretty passable version of Mrs Robinson and through to the 'grand final'.

Lets all cheer for them anyway

Dave the Gnome: Your program sounds a lot like "Star Search" starring Ed McMahon, which ran from 1983 to 1997. (Why do I waste so much time looking up crap like this?) Contestants on this show didn't have to dress up and imitate anyone in particular, but many did. Some eventually became famous (two that come to mind are Britney Spears and LeAnn Rimes), but most sank back into obscurity. And the ones who did become famous usually took several more years of hard work to do it. (I think Britney was about 10 when she appeared.)

McMahon now has a website called Next Big Star. For a small fee, you can have your own video posted on his site!

By the way, I wish I could find a website that does for TV what IMDb does for movies. It seems like there ought to be one. Anyone have any suggestions?

That's hilarious, Guest Dave! We don't have a direct counterpart to that in the U.S., but it sounds like an idea worth stealing. Back in the 70's there was a TV producer, Chuck Barris, who was known for quirky contest shows, such as "The Gong Show," and "The $1.98 Beauty Contest" where the winning "beauty" got $1.98 from the host, who had a changer on his belt.

Guest Dave the Gnome, last fall I think it was, there was a stupid show (i know that is a bit redundant) called Your Big Break or something like that.....it's also where folks dress up like their favorite "singers" and did a song....don't think it lasted too long....wonder why....

Your Big Break is still going on. I have heard some phenomenal singers on the program. One guy who won did an awesome Louis Armstrong. 90% of the performers were very good singers and had the stage presence to carry it off well.

Yes, but the most important question here is, who would WE imitate for such a show? Hmm? Class? Anyone? Anyone? ... Bueller?
