Lost Album/Song

Subject: Lost Song - M. John Hurt
From: GUEST,Orangekona@aol.com

About 20 years ago, a college room-mate of mine bought a Mississippi John Hurt album for real cheap in a local department store. It included a song with a refrain, "We undertands it, all by and by..." I loved that song.

Upon my graduation, the room-mate offered the album to me. I declined to accept it because I didn't have a reciprocal gift for him. I've regretted that decision ever since. I've searched and searched for that song and inquired of many a blues and folk "expert" to no avail.

If you know the song and a recording that includes it, PLEASE let me know.

only one I know is FARTHER ALONG ....in the database with 7-8000 others...*smile*

"Father along, we'll know all about it
Farther along, we'll understand why..
Cheer up my brothers, live in the sunshine,
We'll understand it, all by and by"

ohh..one extra verse I learned many years ago...collected by a friend in a small church in Texas...he says they sang it seriously!

"If workin' and prayin', have any reward,
Surely someday I'll meet with my Lord.
'Cause workin' and prayin' are my greatest thrill.
If anyone makes it, lord, surely I will."

the whole song is about as sanctimonius as they come, but I love singing it!

Sounds like Farther (or Further) Along to me, too: Hurt recorded it on Worried Blues  which you can get from Camsco Music:  Click Here  or from the Mudcat's own shop,  Click Here.

Well Malcolm, you beat me with the Camsco....Here's another site with the other info on MJH albums done on Vanguard, several asisted/produced by a real folkie, Pat Sky, whose playing style is a dead ringer for Hurt's.

Bill and Malcolm have nailed the song. However, there is also another song that has a similar refrain - 'Bye and Bye' - associated with Joseph Spence who has been the subject of a couple of recent threads.

Bye and Bye
