I was planning of having only 10, but i think all these 12 diserve to be on the top-list:

1. When tomorrow comes (Eurythmics)

2. Rockn Roll Music (The Beatles)

3. Anytime you need a friend (Mariah Carey)

4. Show must go on (Queen)

5. Living in a world of common people ( ? )

7. Can I touch you there ? (Michael Bolton)

8. Positivity (Prince)

9. Never forget where you´r coming from (Take that)

10. Aint no mountain higher/high enough (Diana Ross ?)

11. Yesterme, yesteryou, yesterday (Stevie Wonder)

Essentially a subjective list, but not sufficiently eclectic for me. I would subjectively suggest (not in any particular order):

Canon in D (Pachelbel): The Great Silkie (Trad): Londonderry Air (Trad) : Nimrod from Enigma Variations (Elgar) : Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell) : I've Had Her (Phil Ochs) : Don't Cry for me, Argentina (Lloyd Webber) : The First Time Ever I saw your Face (Ewan McColl) : Planxty Irvine (Trad/Carolan) : It Was A Very Good Year (Drake) : Here's That Rainy Day (Van Heusen) : Autumn Leaves (Prevost)

Rock n Roll Music is Chuck Berry's. The Beatles merely covered it.

Rock and roll music? It's just 3 notes. Can't agree there.

Nobody has mentioned Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

Liszt'z Liebestraum #3
Londonderry Air
Annie Laurie
In the Hall of the Mountain King (Grieg)
I Will (the Beatles)
anything by Chopin
Hard Times (Stephen Foster)

I can't think of anymore right this moment.....

This seems like an excercise in futility to me. There are so many different forms of music that you're never going to get agreement on the best 12 melodies.

Now, I know I'm going to get a lot of flack on this, but I'd nominate this thread as one of the 12 worst posted. Yeah, I know, but I'm just in that kind of mood today.

Top melodies ever and not a one more than, what?, 30-40 years old? Most are much more recent. LOL!

I agree with many of Lanfrancs picks,,however, I would add Laras Theme from Dr. Zhivago. Ava Maria, Unchained Melody, Love is Blue. The skerzo from Beethovens 9th is not very melodic, but the rest of it is beautiful. Hell, I would even nominate the theme from The Third Man!

Sergio,

I don't know who you are, and I've tried to answer all your questions and lyric requests as best I can.

I would however, respectfully suggest that you spend at least 5 years absorbing every type of music that you possibly can, and then come up with a top 10 / 12.

With all due respect, your choices show that you have only listened to a tiny percentage of the world's music. Spread your wings, listen to everything in your local library, buy Arabic and Indian CDs however wierd it may seem at first. Listen to classical music, jazz, folk, everything that you can get hold of. You will hate a lot of it, but you'll have a rewarding journey if you stick at it.

Kind regards

Zeb

Sergio...you ARE in a forum created to 'mostly' discuss other types of music...you are psiting from a pretty narrow pop/rock viewpoint...don't be surprised if you get very little agreement.

Also...this kind of list makes so little sense......I have 50 items on the list before I start...and I keep changing my mind

Wildwood Flower/Reuben James

Whistling Rufus

Great Speckled Bird/Wild Side of Life/It Wasn't God Who.../etc., etc.

Londonderry Air/Danny Boy

The Limerick Tune - I thing it's properly called Celita Lindo, but not sure...."Ay, Yi, Yi, Yi, your mother swims after troopships..."

The Ship That Never Returned/Wreck of Old 97/Super Skier/MTA

Ashokan Farewell (no, really, just having been overdone doesn't change the quality of the tune, just makes people sick of it)

That isn't 12, but it's what I can think of right now.

P.

Thanks, Midchuck...those ARE classic tunes, and the fact that they aren't Beethoven's 9th doesn't make them less so....'Lorena' is another

Of course this thread is a waste of time.

There are probably 12 million qualifying tunes, most of which none of us have ever heard.

Mankind is obsessed by lists. From the Bible (great lists of "begats") to radio shows (Desert Island Discs) to list songs (Scarborough Fair, I gave my love a cherry, These Foolish Things) to comic opera (I've got them on my list) and on and on......

Lists can be positive (Schindler's List) or negative ( black lists).

Lists of tunes won't hurt anyone though, unless some curmudgeon has apoplexy.
