'Beginner's Luck', nice CD from a catter

Sometimes the best time to REALLY listen to music is when you're driving. I've had Kendall's album "Beginner's Luck" for a while now, but had a chance to listen to it twice on my drive down and back from New England. It's bloody good. Fine choice of songs, good back up, strong singing, and some wonderful story telling.(I'm still chuckling about the "inside-out bear") Good work Mr. Morse, hope I get to meet you one of these days. Best version of "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" I've heard....'cause ya does it straight!

Thanks also to the Mudcatters who came out to my concerts in Connecticut and New York State, and especially to Sunny Ochs and The Patons for being good friends and putting us up. If Sunny holds one of her "The Music Of Phil Ochs" concerts anywhere NEAR your area, try and get out to it, they're amazing evenings.

Well, Rick, I'll agree that it's a wonderful album, but is it available on CD? I finally broke down and bought the cassette because Kendall didn't ever think it would be available on CD.

But is is a good album. One side is songs - my favorite is Ashes on the Sea, by Utah Phillips. The second side of the tape is all stories, and those stories are wicked good (did I get the Mainespeak right, Kendall?).

Darn it, you're right Joe. My copy is a tape, and I have no idea whether it's on CD or not. Just assumed. Oh well, tape or CD...I like it!

Kennnnnndalllllllll....

What's the story, babe? Will it ever get to CD? Will the tape at least be available at FSGW? Will you be there in person to distribute it? Rick has sold at least one copy for you if the answer is yes...set one aside for me.

Second, third, fourth and fifth on the testaments above. It is a marvellous piece of work. And I would encourage you to do another pressing, Kendall. CD's would be wonderful. If you don't have it, folks, get it. Kendall does a wonderful job.

Well, Kendall, I have no idea whether it would be feasible to produce a CD for only two people, but I'll certainly join p.j. as a buyer. I'll buy the tape if you decide not to make it into a CD. Does Folk Legacy have it?

And a fourth! Thanks, Rick, for telling us about it. I'd heard tell of it before, but not quite that much.

I'll send for mine, Kendall, since i won't be anywhere near FSGW.

Thanks,

kat

Sometimes when you're listening at home with all the distractions, you can't get into the "groove" of an album. The "road's" great for that. Very few distractions, other than the farmer in his pick-up truck who insists on going 25 miles an hour in front of you for two hours!

Well Rick, I sure do appreciate your kind words about my tape, and all of you who own it too! Being a New Englander, I'm not allowed to brag, but, even though it is not perfect, "It's no bad" as they say in Scotland. My appreciation of it goes to the folks who wrote the songs. Without them, there would be no tape. Dave Mallett, Shel Silverstien, Bruce Phillips and Eric Bogle. They should get 99% of the credit.
To answer your question on the CD thing, it is not available on CD. However, harpgirl has been telling me that I could burn a few copies, and, I might do that. Meantime, it is available on tape from me. Just send me $10.00 to Kendall Morse PO 313 Scarboro Maine 04074-0313.
Now dont go rushing, there are plenty left!

Harpgirl, SHAME on you! Haven't you read all the signs saying "Please don't feed the folksingers. It only encourages them!"

Kendall (if you're still on her doorstep). Regarding the "custom CD" situation. Several of us are in the same situation, having older albums on cassette and vinyl (Edison cylinders for the VERY old ones) that folks ask for occasionally. From talking to some folks it seems that purchasing a CD burner is one heck of a good investment. It shouldn't take long to make back the initial outlay, and it also makes it viable to tape your best live performances and make them available pretty quickly.

I have several old albums that aren't really appropriate for either Borealis or Folk-Legacy, being kind of Western Swing/Folk/Country etc. but when I'm playing a more mainstream venue (convention, County Fair, Old Folks Home etc) are quite reflective of what my repertoire is in those places. I'm splitting the cost of the CD pressing equipment with a Rock music friend of mine, and we'll share it. It's worth looking into.

Hey Rick,

Kendall's a Scarberian too!!! Although I doubt that Scarboro, Maine is anything like Scarborough, Ontario.

(I grew up at Markham and Lawrence)

Steve, from his accent, it ain't THIS Scarborough!

You're right folks...just a cheap way of bringing this back up so Kendall can get a few more "CD" orders!

I apologise.

I ordered Kendall's tape, "Beginner's Luck" and for a liberal Democrat, he's a damn good singer!

Seriously, it is excellent. I have listened to it twice and it just arrived in the mail today. Rick, you can really picke 'em.

Thanks, Rick; I appreciated your recommendation, too. Duane & I have been listening, kendall, & thoroughly enjoying the cassette. My 1-hr commute gives me plenty of time to concentrate. Between the 2 of us, Duane & I knew all the songs. I got a kick out of reading the liner notes & realizing that the back-up singers were 2/3 of the Portland, Maine-based group, SchoonerFare. You Mainers stick together, eh, kendall? I enjoyed hearing kendall's version of songs I already liked from others. Gave me a warm feeling to recognize that Maine accent (Did you know that other folks hear that as an accent, kendall?) :) The stories on the 2nd side are great! I knew some; Duane knew more. kendall adds embellishments & his own sense of timing--great fun! All in all, a very pleasant recording, kendall! I'm glad to own it & pleased to have met you in person. Hope we'll be seeing each other again before long. BTW, I'm sending you a check for another cassette. I do believe my Mainer brother-in-law in Yarmouth needs that tape!

best from NY,
