Lyr Req: The Old Lamplighter (from The Browns)

Subject: Lamplighter
From: JenEllen

I think this one was by the Browns....bits of it are floating in my head and I'd really love to know the rest of it, and where I can find a copy/chords. Thanks in advance,

~Elle

The old lamplighter of long ago
He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long ago

If he'd find sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be
For he recalls when days were new
He loved someone who loved him too

His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamp lighter of long ago

THE OLD LAMPLIGHTER
(Words by Charles Tobias Music by Nat Simon, 1946)
Recorded by The Browns

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

You'd hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would cheer a lonely heart you see
If there were sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be
For he recalled when things were new
He loved someone who loved him too
Who walks with him alone in memories

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

Now if you look up in the sky
You'll understand the reason why
The little stars at night are all aglow
He turns them on when night is near
He turns them off when dawn is here
The little man we left so long ago
He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long, long ago

THE OLD LAMPLIGHTER
The Browns

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

You'd hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would cheer a lonely heart you see
If there were sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be
For he recalled when things were new
He loved someone who loved him too
Who walks with him alone in memories

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

Now if you look up in the sky
You'll understand the reason why
The little stars at night are all aglow
He turns them on when night is near
He turns them off when dawn is here
The little man we left so long ago
He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long, long ago

Hi, MMario - you forgot the closing </a> on your link. I fixed it. Hey, your MIDI is better than my two, except that yours has some of that fake hand-clapping as accompaniment. I guess that makes it into a disco "Hooked-On Lamplighter" recording. You can't really dance to it, though.
Why are most MIDIs so tacky?

good question. I prefer a plain "piano" rendition of the melody line to a lot of the midis I find "out there" - though I usually love Lesley and Barry's treatments.

Hi, MMario - I'll agree with your high opinion of the MIDI files produced by Mudcatters Lesley N and Barry Taylor. There's an interesting site called Public Domain Music that has MIDIs from composers of the 19th Century, people like Stephen Foster and Henry Clay work. The site is very good - but I sometimes cringe at some of the Midi arrangements. Lesley and Barry do far better work. All three are listed on our links page, by the way. Click here to get to Barry Taylor's "Great Canadian Tunebook." Click here to get to Lesley's "Contemplator" site, which has tunes sequenced by Lesley and by Barry Taylor.

Yes, your right Joe... very tacky midi's....

Here are the chords I used when singing the song:

He made the [G]night a little brighter
Wher-[B7]ever he would [Em]go
The [C]old lamp-[G]lighter
Of [Em]long, [A7]long a-[D7]go
His snowy [G]hair was so much whiter
Be-[B7]neath the candle [Em]glow
The [C]old lamp-[G]lighter
Of [A7]long, [D7]long a-[G]go

You'd hear the [G]patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would cheer a lonely heart you see
If there were [C]sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
[Am]Remembering the days that used to [D]be
For he [G]recalled when things were new
He loved someone who loved him too
Who walks with him a-[D7]lone in memor-[G]ies

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago
His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

'Tis a good song...
