Orillia Procrastinators Club may form...

19 Oct 00 - 02:17 PM (#322650)
Subject: Orillia Procrastinators Club may form...
From: Little Hawk

For about 5 years now...or is it 6?...some of us musicians and artistic types have been attempting to launch an official Orillia Procrastinators Club for people in the Simcoe County region of Ontario.

For some reason it keeps getting delayed, however.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions on how we could move this project forward to fruition?

We are becoming quite concerned about it, and would happily extend an invitation to out-of-towners, and even our friends in the USA to apply for associate memberships. Anyone who has a tendency to seriously procrastinate would be welcome, especially if they put it off for awhile.

I actually intended to post this a long time ago, but you know how it is...

Now, maybe I should get on with all that work that's piled up on the desk. Naw...I'll just spend a few more minutes on Mudcat...it won't hurt anyone if I do that. Will it?

Lord love a duck, I was thinking of coming up there for a visit, but I don't seem to get around to planning it, nor do you-all seem to get around to inviting me.

So put me down for a charter membership. Clearly this is the club for me.

being only an amature-crastinator, I doubt I need to be a member of a group of pros, but it would be interesting to attend a meeting...DO let me know when you are organized, and I'll check my schedule....

The real PRO-crastinators may be the ones who just can't get around to posting to this thread...

Gad! There's a disturbing thought!

I think it is far to early to consider forming a club such as this. first, there should be a study done to determine whether or not there are sufficient procrastinators availablee to put off attending this club in a proper manner. However, I can see that any such study would have to be delayed until the interest group is determined. But before that can be done someone has to decide who will be hired to undertake the study. So is there anyone out there willing to volunteer to be on a committee to choose a firm to determine whether or not this club should exist?

I'll nominate someone for the committee MMario, but we first need to determine where the committee should meet and develop its action plan for the 19th century.

No, no, no, no, MMario. This is the procrastinator's club. The bureaucrat's club meets in Room 410 at 5:05. Or is it room 505 at 4:10? Whichever it is the first order of business will be to choose a chairman. Two hours of discussion will be allotted for that once we choose an interim chairman to moderate the discussion. Then we have allotted an hourt to discuss the times for the next meetings followed by a two hour discussion of the furnishings in the room.

I'm sorry but the members of the bureaucrat's club are far too busy to take up their time with a procrastinator's club.

No, Don, that was the Tudhope Car committee. They are trying to market a car (called the Tudhope) that was designed and built in Orillia back in either the 20's or the early 30's, I think. There is a surviving Tudhope still driveable. I've seen it. It looks kind of like a Model T Ford convertible.

The Tudhopes, by the way, are one of the very rich old families that founded Orillia, and according to local gossip still figure they own the place. I hear that they were quite stuffy about giving any recognition to Gordon Lightfoot, because his family lived on the poor side of town...the wrong side of the tracks, as it were. I consider them to be members of the get-a-life club, while they probably consider me to be beneath their notice...if they've noticed me at all. Stephen Leacock satirized the rich stuffed shirts of Orillia savagely in books like "Arcadian Adventures of the Idle Rich", and they did not appreciate it one bit at the time, although they've grown nostalgic about him since.

The people I really admire are those who have yet to post to this thread, proving (hopefully) that they are real, died-in-the-wool procrastinators.

People like Art Thieme, and Zebedee, and Spaw...

Of course, it could be that they just don't like this thread, and feel it is a complete waste of their time...but.......NAWWWWWW.......impossible.

Little Hawk, Little Hawk. Do you know any of the Tudhopes? Are you certain that the information in your story is correct?

I know one Tudhope, Roger. I never connected him in my mind with the Tudhope Car Company. He lives on the right side of town but he's a good man, likes to talk, laughs easily, coaches kids in soccer. I can't see him having a grudge against Lightfoot. He has always been friendly to me even though I lived in a worse part of town than Lightfoot ever did. He's a good coach too. One time we took a school team together. The team got to the second round of the playoffs before another team scored on them.

The Tudhope family donated the land that is now Tudhope Park to the city for use by the city of Orillia. For years the city used the land as a campground, renting out spaces to people visiting. The family objected on the grounds that they want the people of Orillia to enjoy the land, not visiting campers. After many years, the city closed the campground and opened up all the land as parkland. It made a great site for Mariposa. The Tudhope family donated a great piece of land. We should thank them.

I would guess that from your story that someone on city council wanted to change the name of Tudhope Park to Lightfoot Park and the family objected. After the camping business and since the land was donated to commemorate the family, I don't blame them. The city has done a shabby job of recognizing Lightfoot. Why didn't they rename another park? I believe city even had land in the Tudhope Park area, by the Leacock Home, which they sold to a sister company of Versa Food for apartment development. City councils have shown less respect for the city than Lightfoot or the Tudhope family.

Ah well, that's interesting info, flattop. I will have to revise my opinion of the Tudhopes. Just goes to show, one shouldn't rely on idle gossip. I agree that Lightfoot has been treated rather shabbily, but it sounds as if the Tudhopes have as well.

Maybe the problem is that the City Council have their minds too much on money...and short term popularity.

Anyway, given the fact that you have had some involvement in the politics of this town, I give considerable credence to your argument. Thanks for the correction.

Back in the late 80's there was a spectacular case of procrastination in Washago, a very small place north of Orillia, Ontario. A BIG sign was put up on a vacant lot near the main street(actually, the only street, more or less...) of Washago.

The sign said "Quetton Place - a modern 12-unit mall - Opening SOON!". It stood there for years and years. I was tempted after the first 3 years to creep out in the middle of the night, and paint the word "fairly", before "SOON".

Further modifications would have gone...

1992 - cross out "fairly soon" and replace it with "not so soon".

1993 - "in a while"

1994 - "eventually"

1995 - "someday"

1996 - "maybe never"

1997 - "this century"

1999 - "maybe next century?"

2000 - "Oh, FORGET IT!!!"

They eventually did take the sign down and there is now simply a vacant lot at the edge of Washago.

I say we award the whole town of Washago a free membership in our club-to-be.

Believe me, I will be an honorary lifetime member when this thing gets off the ground!

I have slept through important meetings because I put off going to bed....... I am consistently late for practically everything, including becoming a member of the NYCFTTS.

If I told you any more, you would probably wonder HOW I get ANYTHING done.

Well, guess what? I don't get much done. At all.

I was going to get a job, but never got around to it....

I was going to get a life, but I keep putting it off........

BlueJay here. I think I deserve a membership as well. Back in May of this year, Allan C. and Bill Sables toured the U.S., and came through my town. Before they left, my wife coerced me into finding the camera. Eventually, I took a few shots. Within months, I had the film developed, despite the fact that the processor wanted to be paid immediately.
So now, I have bought a scanner. I victoriously hooked it up to my computer, and it seems to work. One of these days, I fully intend to read the instructions, as evidenced by the fact that I printed out all the "Help" instructions on about a ream of paper, which now seems to be lost, (along with the photos), as we recently moved. I don't want to be too bold, but I think I will be able to located the photos within the next few weeks, if I don't put it off. Once I find the photos, it shouldn't be more than a few months before I figure out how to post them to the Mudcat Cafe. I fully intended to sleep tonight, but that doesn't seem to be working out so far. Oh well, sign me up as a charter member, whenever you get the time. BlueJay
