Granted, Mickey Dolenz had to learn the drums (he's a singer and a fine guitarist by nature). Sure, Davy Jones is a prick (I have proof of his lousy attitude towards fans). Sure, Peter Tork can't hardly get arrested (he is a fine guitar and banjo picker, though). But what about Mike Nesmith? I have heard some of the recordings he made as Michael Blessing; folk music for sure. Down to earth, BEAUTIFUL ballads/story songs. He is a fine lyricist and a SUPERB guitar (6 and 12) and banjo picker (Scruggs or clawhammer)!! Can anyone else besides me POSSIBLY have gotten past the wool hat and heard some of the TALENT under there? Different Drum (hit for Ronstadt; Nesmith wrote it) What Am I Doin' Hanging 'Round?; Nesmith hit for Monkees ...there are more (I don;t have a CD or book in front of me). At one time I had all the First National Band LP's and most of Nesmith's post-FNB work. Then I was unemployed for a time and they got sold to pay for groceries. Sob! And call me weird, but I like Lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam. And "Time Capsule" or whatever the other title is. Maybe I will fly down to Rio. Or maybe not. Never have figured out what "Joanne" is about, though.

I've enjoyed Papa Nes since I heard the first "First National Band" album in 1968 and realized that this guy was the real thing. His version of "one Rose", which is an old Jimmie Rodgers tune (the singing breakman, not the guy who sang "Honeycomb"), is a big favorite of mine. He was experimental and eclectic, to say the least, but he knew his sources (IMHO) well enough to move the music forward a bit. His use of the steel guitar, particularly on the 1st and 3rd FNB albums was unique and for the time, groundbreaking. A whole 'nother topic is his "Elephant Parts" video and resultant TV show. If Al Gore can take credit for the internet, Nesmith can take credit for MTV (now, I realize some people don't see this as a good thing, but that's a different discussion). The music on the video is, at times, wonderful (I don't want to nominate him for sainthood or anything). Oh yeah, I named the band the I played with for abourt fifteen years (Cactus Jack) after a line from his song "Texas Morning" - "Cactus Jack drinks coffee black/and tells me it's my lucky day". The transition from that song into "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" is really very cool. Have a great day Bart |

I've long toyed with the idea of working up a set of songs that come from artists labeled as pop/rock/bubblegum/misc.tripe/etc, but have individual songs that are worth a second listen. (Not that I include Michael Naismith in this category, but his association with the Monkees does earn him a bad rep sometimes) I think a set like that would be just the thing to pull out at a folk club when some of the "folks" are getting a bit too big for their britches in their purist attitude...hmmm, a fun project>>>any suggestions to add to the play list? Anyone who made such a good job of Daydream Believer can't be all bad, and Last train to Clarksville is a hoot on Anglo Concertina... I will certainly look out for Nesmith from now on - I didn't know he was a closet folky but I guessed there must be sone talent in there:-) Anyone know if there is any truth in the rumour that they were funded by the CIA to help the 'war' against the the subversive effect of the Beatles?
