BOIL THEM CABBAGE DOWN Traditional

Chorus:
Boil them cabbage down, boys,
Turn them hoecakes 'round,
Only song that I can sing is
Boil them cabbage down.

Raccoon has a bushy tail,
Possum's tail is bare.
Rabbit ain't got no tail at all but a
Little bitty bunch o' hair.
(Chorus)

Raccoon and the possum,
Racin' cross the prairie.
Raccoon ask the possum,
Did she want to marry.
(Chorus)

Possum is a cunnin' thing,
Travels in the dark,
Never thinks to curl her
tail 'Til she hears ol' Rover bar
k. (Chorus)

Possum up a 'simmon tree,
Raccoon on the ground,
Raccoon say to the possum,
"Won't you shake them 'simmons down?"
(Chorus)

Jaybird died of the whoopin' cough,
Sparrow died of the colic.
'Long come a frog with a fiddle on his back
Inquirin' his way to the frolic.
(Chorus)

Not a problem! There's little enough I can really do to help people here, compared to all y'all have taught me. Glad to add a little in the credit column when I can.

Ah, the problems of searching on dialect. Try a search on "cabbage".

I think I need a West Virginia translator is what I need.
First I tried to understand what on earth Dwight Diller was saying on his beginner's banjo video I was watching......."Why now wees goin to learn 'Boy and Dem Cabbage Town'.
Well at least thats what I heard until I asked around just so I could respectfully request the lyric on the Mudcat.

Cletus thanks, next time I will come find you.
Won't be too hard, I can smell you a country away.

Did you notice some of these lyrics?

Took my gal to the blacksmith shop
To have her mouth made small
She turned around a time or two
And swallowed shop and all

Sometimes I wonder why I took up the banjo.

Alex,
you're in my hall of fame of Mudcat records now. We had already a zero minutes response delay (no lyrics, no clicky), a two minutes response delay (clicky), a three minutes response delay (lyrics with line breaks), a three minutes response delay (2 links) but as far as I know we had not yet a three minutes response delay with clicky and lyrics.
And, Little Neo, I have never seen yet a quicker 'thank you' than yours.

And then there is:

My gal ran around the barn
I run out to meet 'er
She pulled up her petticoats
And I pulled out .... for Georgia.

You know what guys, I never realized there are lots of songs I can sing to this tune.
Why I could sing 'That Good Old Mountain Dew' if I wanted to. But personally I would like to sing 'Traveling That Highway Home'. I really like that song. I was given that suggestion by a guardian angel.
Then I can avoid thoughts of men abusing their women.

Wolfgang, the reason we responded so quicky to this thread is because all of us did a line of coke before getting On-Line.

And don't forget
I bought my gal a bicycle
She learned to ride it well
Till she rode into a telephone pole
And broke it all....to pieces

As a kid I only knew one verse to boil them cabbage down. It was highly localized. My family living in and around Climax Mi. near Battle creek. The verse went ( Badger went to battle Creek, He fell down on his back, Lucy hit him with a club and made his ole head crack)   jethro53@netzero.com

The greener grows the grass

Of all the birdies in the sky
I love the mallard duck.
He flies above the desert sands
And watches people holdin' hands.

Of all the fishes in the sea
I love the stripey bass.
He climbs up in a beechy tree
And slides down on his hands and knees.

Evidently, one may steal any stanza from "Cindy" or "Old Joe Clark", with a good chance that one is merely stealing it back.

Amos's second stanza is an abridgement (for the sake of the meter, I dare say) of

Of all the fishes of the sea, The strangest is the bass. It climbs into the tops of trees And slides down on its hands and knees To frolic in the grass.

The 20 Oct 2000 post from MarkS rings a bell!

I grew up with the comedy sketch, built around The Cabbage Song, by the Smothers Brothers, and Tommy Smothers belted out that very verse about crashing the bicycle into a telephone pole and breaking it all to pieces.
