Lyr Req: Zane Grey (Tom Russell)

Does anyone know the lyrics to the song titled "Zane Grey"? I know that Bill Staines recorded it. I don't think he wrote it. It's not in any of his books. I'm having a difficult time transcribing the lyrics off of the recording.

Thanks in advance....Mike

"Zane Grey" was written by Tom Russell. He first recorded it on one of his duo albums with Patricia Hardin in the 1970s and again on "Cowboy Real."

OK... here you go... from the recording...

Not 100% on the third verse... If you don't sort it out before next Monday (30th), PM me, and I will ask Bill.... He is playing in Seattle and I know where to reach him...

Should have asked this morning.... Had him on the Mudcat for a bit... could have had it 'straight from the horses mouth'!

ZANE GREY
(Tom Russell)

Time's when old Zane could run
As fast as any horse in the Texas sun
But that was back in '51,
Too many trails ago

CHORUS: And it's get up Zane the ground's too cold
And it's get up Zane I know you're getting old
You've got the whooping cough and a sway back fold
And it's get up old Zane Grey.

They shipped him up north early one spring
And auctioned him off to a rental string
Ten long years in a dusty old ring
Dreaming of his Texas home

?A sorrel red high covered over with flour?
And you could ride old Zane for a dollar an hour
That outlaw trails by the water tower
Till Zane couldn't ride no more

You're gonna live out your days in the back ranch grass
Swatting at the flies as the mares go past
A broke down trot is about as fast
As old Zane Grey can move.

Hope this helps...

The line as given in the insert to 'Cowboy Real' is 'A sorrel-red hide sprinkled with flour'.

The Zane Grey I've heard of was a famous sportsman, author and big game fisher in the '30s, not a horse!
He even had a range of Hardy Bros big-game fishing tackle designed for, and named after him. Anybody got unused examples lyin' in the attic? - serious bucks offered!
