But I doubt seriously if any one us would ever that one kind of cancer is more important than another. Be interesting to see what sort of banner you come up with, and the ribbon could prove difficult..... I'm sure that there are sites for prostate and other testicular cancers, go and have a look and see. Breast cancer tends to get emphasis because it is so easy to screen. Make a noise about testicles and you too can have them squashed between two plates of glass - vertically, not horizontally - and photographed by a bored techinician, who could just save your life.... For those of you wondering or making jokes about why the NFL might be involved, they have several good reasons in mothers, sisters, and wives of players who have had breast cancer. One of the best known is from right here in Columbus. Steffanie Spielman has gained a lot of publicity in the fight against breat cancer. The story of her husband, LB Chris Spielman shows there is more to life than football. One of the greatest players around, he ended his career to be with her during the worst of the times, and was unable to make a comeback. The two of them make a lot of appearances and have the backing of a large grocery chain and have raised a ton of money and awareness. Nice folks, real folks. PROSTATE???? For those of you who asked........In Central Ohio, Mt. Carmel Health Systems (multi hospital/Urgent cares, etc.) has been HEAVILY advertizing the dangers and the importance of check-ups. They are a large organization and have had some impact. Karen is a Histologist in their lab and about 35% of their workload is prostate biopsies. Somebody is listening because a year ago that figiure was less than 10%. Spaw |

In defence of intruding another form of cancer into this thread: It doesn't take away from the fight against breast cancer! Having "returned" a testicle to the cosmos many years ago because of cancer, I am very aware of the terror, pain and long treatment period that breast cancer survivors undergo. The prostate though is an organ that doesn't have the same cachet or sexiness that breasts have...(I've never seen a pushup undie sold to display it!) My wife undergoes regular breast examinations, and she tells me it IS painful to be squished-so I can sympathize! On the other hand(my doctor's), it isn't pleasant to be buggered by a big finger every year at prostate checkup time!) Rich

I have been to the site and clicked on the ribbon. My 11 year old daughter wants to be a scientist when she grows up and I certainly hope she finds the cure for Cancer in general. My father died of Lung Cancer and now my Mom is on her last days or perhaps weeks with Breast Cancer. Mom had Quadruple Bypass Heart surgery about two or three years ago so her heart is pretty strong; so I guess the Hospice shes in just has to let the stupid Cancer take its course. The one thing that Mom always said is she would like to go peacefully in her sleep with no pain; and frankly that would be my wish for her also No Pain and to go Peacefully. LOL to all who have clicked on the Pink Ribbon. I'm a relatively new Mudcatter; I just started posting on the 20th (Robert Johnsons' Music) I am more a Blues fan than say a folk fan even though I do enjoy the 60's protest songs (Peter Paul & Mary,Dylan Etc.) Glad to see you here, and I'm sorry for your mom's trouble. I lost my mother to uteran (sp?) cancer about 14 years ago. She had the same wish as your mom, to go without pain and in peace. Luckily, she was able to get hospice services at home and she got her wish. And that's another thing we all could think about. If any of you have the time available, why don't you volunteer for a hospice program in your local area? You don't have to be a medical person, as there are lots of programs that provide support services for the clients of hospice care and their families. It's the little things that mean to the most, especially to the families with children, when a loved one is coming to the end of their good fight. -- Áine |

All cancers have the same cause and can be cured by this regimen. However, to even things up, didja know that 30 years ago, the average was something like 4 out of 100 people would get cancer? And now, it is one in four?! Ouch. I have clicked on the Pink Ribbon about 5 times now; I'm not sure if there is a limit to the number of times you can click on the ribbon but I hope they not only raise billions and billions of dollars but that they use that money to find a Cure for the damn stuff. Well although I'm not Catholic; I am going to have my own wake of sorts today. I'm going over to my brother-in laws house to celebrate my Mom's life not her passing. My prayer for anyone out there who is going through the same situation as myself (a parent or loved one dying of Cancer) stay strong and may your Loved One leave this Earth in Peace with no pain. That is not just a finger, it's a thing that looks not a great deal unlike the space ship in Moonraker, that expands to swallow up smaller spaceships.... the scene where it creeps up behind the little module, and then opens its jaws always has me crossing my legs/eyes/nostrils in anticiapated agony. If there was a cure why would the medical profession not want you to know? millions and millions are spent on cancer research each year. Research does not make anyone money unless you develop a product and market it. No one emakes money by keeping a product a secret. Also as a cancer researcher myself I can tell you that all cancer do NOT have the same cause. Ultraviolet light and and cigarettes are not the same thing and work in very different ways together and speerately to help cause cancer. Cancer is a very very complex disease. It is multi focal and has numerous causes. If anyone wishes to purchase their medical products on the internet that is fair enough. Do so it is your right. But I would urge everyone not to put their health esp. in such a serious matter as cancer in the hands of a website. Take care Mj If we do find a cure here Jill, I promise I won't keep it secret. When I hung up the phone I called my doctor and finally made the apppointment I had been putting off for my first mammogram. They can't see me until January, and somehow it seems a little scary to wait now, I want to get it out of the way. Anyway, I was glad to see this thread, and have happily supported the sites. Breast cancer used to be something that you just didn't talk about - but campaigners have changed all that. And much for the better. People don't talk about testicular cancer because men don't talk about their balls very easily. They delay going to see the doctor, so that it's not often caught early. Men aren't taught to do regular testicular examination. There needs to be a public awareness campaign about "men's" cancers. And it needs to come from men, or it won't work. Testicular cancer is not as major a cause of death as breast cancer, but its just as important to those who get it. Oh and by the way, men can get breast cancer too. Bagpuss |

They do go to see the doctor when they find something dodgy. And they do examine themselves, they (well at least some of them) fiddle with them all the time!! I can't see why people got so uptight about Peter's post - it was a valid question to ask. As Bagpuss says, testicular cancer is not as major a cause of death. I heard that about 20 years ago it would have been virtually a death sentence - fortunately it is now one of the most curable cancers (close to 100% cure rate?). So there must have been a huge research effort on how to cure that specific thing. So hurrah for the researchers & I'll go and have a click so that breasts can get lucky too. Kris |

She wrote something about a mammogram being painful, and the doctor who was helping her with her thesis said she shouldn't say that; people will be discouraged from coming in for the screening. He suggested she says it produces "some minor discomfort." Her take was that if you lie to people, and say it produces "minor discomfort" and then they find out the truth (it hurts like hell), that they will be LESS likely to come back in for a second screening. She says, you should tell the patient, "it hurts like hell, but it can save your life so DO IT!" -- and you're going to get more people in more times for more mammograms. Of course her thesis was not on breast screening, so she never had to test her hypothesis. I wonder what our Mudcat ladies think about it though? Which would make you more likely to commit to regular screenings?

I knew it was going to hurt before I got there and it didn't stop me. I once had a bladder infection where they had to get the sample by sticking a glass tube straight into my bladder. (use your imagination.) The nurse said, this won't hurt. But when you put a tube into an opening which is only meant for things to Come Out of, it hurts! I would rather know it's going to hurt so I won't be surprised. If I get a nasty surprise, I get angry, and it's no fun. Now, the funny part of this story is (and I might have told this on another thread in the past), it was Halloween and the nurse had on a long black witch wig and a tall black witch's hat. I swear I thought I was on Candid Camera. Anyway I think it's important that people know what to expect ahead of time to prevent those ugly surprises. |

I had to be awake for the colonoscopy. And they make you lay (lie? I can never do those two verbs) on a refrigerated stainless-steel slab with no clothes on while a lady (it's always a woman who has to shove the hose up my butt - why is that?) shoves a hose up my anterior, then tells me she sees the staples from my vasectomy. Geez, how degrading. |

It seems that women have more 'things that hurt' on a semi-regular basis. Even with prostate exams and sigmoidoscopies and kidney stones, I think I got the easier gender.... sorry it's such a pain, ladies...but DO take care of your selves...we love you. (just remembered...a woman I know was telling about her new *female* OB/GYN, and allowed as how it took another woman to appreciate the sanity of heating the speculum in warm water before an exam) |
