25 Oct 00 - 11:20 PM (#327514) Subject: Florida Folk Festival Date Change From: Troll For all those in the Southeast and Florida in particular, I have Just learned that the date of the Florida Folk Festival is being changed from Memorial Day Weekend in May to an as-yet undetermined date in October. This is NOT rumor; I e-mailed Ken Crawford at the Fla. Dept Of State (he runs the festival) and he confirmed it. He said they were looking at maybe the last weekend in the month but nothing was firm as yet. The reasons for the change are varied and do make some sense. October is cooler, fewer bugs, more school field-trips, the college students are not mired down with finals and there are more tourists on the roads. This is a major change, the like of which we have not seen since the early 70's when we moved to labor day for a few years because of crowd-control problems. Forgive me for using the Forum for such a regional issue but it's the best way I knew of letting everyone know. It sure changes MY vacation plans! troll |

26 Oct 00 - 06:49 AM (#327639) Subject: RE: BS: Florida Folk Festival Date Change From: harpgirl ...unfortunately...the real reason for this change is Jeb Bush's Republican cry to cut government by 25%. The number of days of the festival will be cut, the number of stages is getting cut and the number of performers will be reduced. I think it sucks! Moving it to October is just a smokescreen for the real issues here. |

When they cut 'government' it usually means arts and services to the handicapped and the poor and education, the smallest ticket items on the budget.
