Lyr Add: Pilgrim of Sorrows

Subject: Pilgrim of Sorrows
From: John Hardly

I am a poor pilgrim of sorrows
Cast out in this wide(old) world to roam
My brothers and sisters won't own me (don't know me)
They say that I'm weak and I'm worn (poor)
But Jesus, the Father Almighty
Has bade me to enter the door

Chorus;
Sometimes I'm tossed and driven,
Sometimes I don't know where to roam
(but)I've heard of a city called Heaven
And I've started to make it my home.

My mother's already in glory,
But my papa's still walkin' in sin
My brothers and sisters don't know me
Because I am tryin' to get in.

Chorus

When friends and relations forsake me,
And troubles grow round me so high
I think of the kind words of Jesus
"poor pilgrim I always am nigh"

Chorus

Oh soon I shall reach the bright glory,
Where mortals no more do complain
The ship that will take me is coming
The captain is calling my name

Chorus

Some lyrics adapted by Tim O'Brien on his "Remember Me" cd, some transcribed from a 1987 PHC performance by Jubilant Sikes.

John Hardly, that's lovely. Thanks so much for sharing it. I hope I can hear you sing it someday, because that's how I learn new pieces. So pretty. What is the rhythm and feel of it?

Praise,

I play it very reminiscent of "Wayfarin' Stranger" but The first time I heard it was Syke's full throated baritone and I wept. Tim O'Brien's version has the opening verse with the weird rhyme scheme and sounds like it has a bagpipe drone in the background. Either version leaves your hair on end!

Well... um... what would I have to do to get a tape of YOUR version?

I've actually been agonizing over recording for some time. I have been arranging hymns for guitar for the last ten years. I've lined up a studio with a very talented multi-instrumentalist up in MI who I think could really help add interest to the arrangements. Trouble is, I'm just not sure why I want to do it. At first it was just to get them down on tape for memory's sake. Then I had a few people who've heard me request recordings (you can never tell in those cases whether they're just being flattering). I don't have any kids to which I would hand down a recording for sentimentality. HearMe has been almost the totality of my performing "career" :>)!

Still, I love music and I really enjoy the challenge of putting new life in these greatly loved old hymns. The way the contemporary church is going these days these hymns are going to need to be saved and passed along much like our beloved folk stories and songs.

Incidentally, thanks for the memories. I had two college roommates, one from Johnstown PA and the other who constantly reminded him that he was from "Pennsyltucky". Hadn't heard anyone but me use that name for years until you did in another thread.

John, a warning. People who hang out with me tend to go straight to wherever they have a stuck spot and... get unstuck. It's not always comfortable... really.

With this in mind, may I suggest that this thing might get unstuck if you were to think of the value of spreading the songs themselves. Never mind the quality, the technique, the sound equipment, or doing any of it right. Your MudSister wants to learn a hymn to sing on a Saturday night, and would love to learn it from YOU and then make it her own.

That said, I have owed McGrath (and a bunch of others) tapes for months. I'se shy. Maybe sumbuddy help me get unstuck too. I have some real lousy tapes, John... wanna trade? And they are hymns. You know, that's a responsibility. In my own defense, I really have not had time to dupe what I have, and I have been having some serious vocal problems too. But the ball is still in my court.

Now it's in yours too!

Love you either way!

And I will think of you as I tear through the Pennsyltucky hills, going up to the spring to fetch water, learning whatever I have on hand now to learn from, singing... most recently, Giac and Dharmabum have blessed me...

Thanks for a new way of looking at it! If we shy ones unite we may yet get up the courage to ask permission to TAKE OVER THE WORLD! --John

LOL!!!! Funny I ain't shy about that stuff!

I have this one MudPal, he's been trying to get me to sing to him on the phone for months. Strictly for my own good. I'd got him unstuck on something else, see. After awhile, little snatches of verses finally started popping out of my mouth unexpectedly, whenever they would illustrate whatever we were talking about. Now I can do whole verses.

It is very odd-- In church I am fine, as long as anyone is singing with me. Maybe we'd better plan on duetting it together. Where you at? Meet halfway. Borrow a confessional so we have a screen to hide behind and two compartments. Pretend we are singing in the shower. Or go for a ride. I can always sing when I drive, no matter who is there.

What gets me past these things is always THE SONG. If I am trying to give someone a song, I care about the song and not the singer.

PM me your phone number, maybe? Then we can spend hours laughing off the tension and get past this. I know exactly how it will go. We will take turns, brightly and expectantly asking for a song. The one answering will agree with (much laughter), take a deep breath, crack up, let out the breath, start over, dissolve in giggles.... my favorite dodge is to whistle instead, and hey! That IS a melody there! PWO. Pants Wetting Opportunity.

This approach does actually work, I used to use it in voice lessons. Had a very understanding voice teacher who would let me laugh for most of the lesson, and then I'd be so relaxed I'd sing really well for the last five minutes.

Also I had to learn to use different techniques-- quit trying to sing perfect and just SING.

Up to you. Love to learn that hymn though John.

Just played Tim O'Brian's version of Pilgrim of Sorrows on the CD "Remember Me," then started playing the melody on my fiddle. It ended up as a slow mournful version of Rosin the Beau (or Acres of Clams). Is Pilgrim another variant of this old tune? Anyway, it's beautiful.

We should all get together. I bet there are a lot of ways to do this and it would be fun to morph them along with each other.
