Help: Bluegrass by black musicians

Just before my computer crashed, losing all my precious bookmarks, I'd saved an address on, I think, CDNow or Amazon.com, for a CD of bluegrass music by black musicians. I'd really like to get this for a friend from Virginia who has been extremely helpful to me. But now I can't find it. Does it ring any bells with anyone?

You asked the same question on Sept. 18 and got lots of good information, none of which you acknowledged. I suggest you do a forum search on 'black blugrass'.

Hmm. Tried a search for "black bluegrass" and got this:

Sorry, no documents were found which match your query. Some tips which might help you locate the desired information:

Check the spelling of your search terms

Use Wildcards at the end of words (e.g. user* instead of users)

If you have Boolean operators in your query, try using OR instead of AND

Try a fuzzy search

Whoops - upset by the nasty tone, I was searching the wrong place. Found the threat now. Unfortunately it didn't help. Ah well. Thanks anyway.

In the last 'black bluegrass' thread by JTT, I mentioned that I'd heard of a black bluegrass band in ANOTHER thread, and I just found it. Here's what Terry Allan Hall had to say in the "Why are almost all 'mudcatters 'white?'" thread (I'll just copy the whole entry, though I don't really agree with parts of it):

"Here's one reason....there are likely many others, actually...Black folks are actively DISCOURAGED from being part of the "folk process"....by the BLACK media/movers & shakers!

Case in point...ever hear of The McCallister Family? An all-black bluegrass band who are VERY, VERY good...but few festivals will give them a chance ('cause bluegrass is {alledgedly} a "white" genre), and I've seen black folks scream obscenities at the band for playing "the white man's music"! Randy (lead vocals, mandolin) McCallister has told me about black promoters actually picketting McCallister Family gigs as being "Uncle Tom-ist", and they've had black folks throw stuff at 'em on stage a few times...

Another couple examples: Tracy Chapman and Richie Havens...Black radio refuses to play these talented folks recordings because they don't have that "black sound"...too much melody and intelligent song-craft, and not enough mention of "drive-by" activities?...

Reverse racism is still racist!"

Dunno if that helps ya...
