Lyr Req: Wreck of the Old 97 (parody from PHC)

Subject: Wreck of the Old 97 Parody - On PHC
From: GUEST,V. Goodfellow

My son told me about a funny parody of the Wreck of the Old 97 on Prarie Home Companion last week. I tried to listen to it on their web page but it seems to be gone already. Does anyone know the words to this Anti-Bluegrass Parody?

Thanks,

V. G.

Yeah, I heard the tail-end of that...something about Bluegrass playing while the car burned up??? (you can tell IM not a songwriter..) anyway, hope someone can find it.. it really was hilarious...

It was hillarious, as Thyme 2dream said about a car on fire and as only Garrison K. does. I think you may have to wait for summer reruns.

Okay, you're shaming me into it. We tape phc for more convenient listening each week. Was just about to tape over when i read this. Will try to transcribe at some point this week, and post.

Okay Gypsy! I wish I had been able to tape it also. I love listening to PHC over again. Mostly I try to catch the show while at work, so I miss a lot. Locally it is broadcast the next day over AM radio which is near to impossible to hear from my location. I guess I need to follow your lead and tape, tape, tape. Looking forward to your transcription.

See my other thread on this very topic; the song ended in You Can't Kill Bluegrass Nohow, and that was part of the thread title...

Couldn't find your thread...if it turns out that you already typed this...groan...

THE WRECK OF THE OLD '97

Oh he bought it from Steve
a guy from Virginia,
a "97 mazda four door.
It had thirtyeight thousand,
and real nice tires,
and it never had no problems before

We he put down his money,
and he pulled out of Richburg (?)
he put his foot down on the gas.
And he turned on the radio,
and it wasn't workin',
all it would get was Bluegrass

He turned the dial,
and he twisted the antennae
it only got Bill Monroe.
And he got so mad,
that he stomped on the pedal,
though the highway sign said slow

Music Break

He was goin' down the hill,
makin' 90 miles an hour,
when out jumped a full grown deer.
He hit the brakes
he grabbed the shift lever
and he put it into parking gear.

Well, it tore out the U joints
and it burned the transmission,
it tore up the whole crankshaft.
And it knocked, the cup, of coffee off his dashboard
it fell right into his lap

It blew the front tires,
and the car flipped over,
and he could no longer steer.
In the trunk of the car,
he was carrying an anvil
it flew right past his ear.

Music break

And the airbag opened
as the car flipped over,
10 times it cartwheeled
Down the highway,
with the engine smokin'
it cam to rest in a field.

He leaped from the wreck, and he dove for cover,
and heard the flames,
as the roared and crackled,
and he also heard Bill Monroe

The radio played,
as the flames leaped higher
You could hear the fiddle cry.
It played "In the Pines",
and "Will the Circle be Unbroken",
"By n By Lord" by and by.

Well the car sat and burned
right down to the axles,
the radio continued to play.
You can wreck your car,
till it's just a pile of ashes,
but you can't kill Bluegrass,
No way!

Music end

Try using a timer on your radio..it is how we tape PHC each week. Got a smart stereo that can time, and tape in both directions. No more setting alarm to flip over the tape!

Thanks, Gypsy, no I hadn't typed them out, I was asking for them too, but I made the mistake of putting Bluegrass in the thread title and nobody would open it! LOL! And thanks for the PM, I wouldn't have found this otherwise!
