It was from a poem by Ted Egan and the music was composed by Margaret Bradford. The poem is beautiful and the music fits it nicely. I can work out the lyrics. What I am interested in is: Who are the poet and music composer? Do they go back a long way are are they relatively recent? Is Egan Aboriginese? The poem is from an Aboriginal point of view. I somehow missed it until recently. I try to stay out of record shops because they play such loud, usually awful, music. I pretty much do all my record shopping on the Internet for that reason. I didn't ask where to find the song; but rather some details about the author and composer. Do you mean I should read the record jackets? 29 Oct 00 - 05:27 AM (#329660) Subject: RE: Poor Fellow My Country From: Bob Bolton G'day Murray, Ted Egan, who is immensely popular with both Country Music fans and folkies in Australia worked as a Northern Territory Patrol Officer before gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from the ANU, majoring in Australian Studies and Politics. He has always had a strong sympathy for the Aboriginal people he worked with and is remebered by them with real affection. His Aboriginal material is written with real collaboration and genuine concern ... and it comes out in tthe songs. He has also written songs about other minority groups in the Australian context - Darwin Chinese and Broome's pearl divers come to mind. I am not sure if he is on the internet yet ... but I would expect there to be atleast a fan site out there. I have met Ted and his Lady Neris Evans at Jamberoo and national Folk Festivals and he is a real character - and an Australian with real concerns about eveyone in the country. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Ted is a prolific songwriter with a great feel for Australia and it's multicultural society. A the moment he is trying very hard to raise money to finance a film project called "The Drover's Boy" the idea for the film being taken from his song of the same name and the script being written by his lady Nerys. It promises to be a wonderful film but he is getting very little(read NO) assistance from the Australian Film Board, and is a couple of Mil short of his target of AUS$7.5M. The money so far raised being from friends, fans and supporters.

(Definitely unlikely ... me ever having millions, that is!) As far as I can see, I was the first one to publish Ted's song The Drover's Boy. It won the Bush Music Club New Song and Tune category back in the '80s and I had one of the Club members transcribe it from the concert tape ... published it in the Club Magazine Mulga Wire. I did not see it in print anywhere else for a year or two - and the when I did, it appeared to be based on our transcription. Regards, Bob Bolton |

She is a good singer/sogwriter and has several CDs, mostly of her own work. I can't remember her doing a different version of Ted's song, so I would guess she does Ted's tune. Maybe Bugsy can confirm this - although I suspect he would only have heard Margaret at a state ot national festival, if at all. Regards, Bob Bolton |

He finished up sacking them but the money was lost. SO he had to start again. I don't know how he would look at going with another producer after that episode, but thanks for the info, I will pass it on to him. I do know that investment options begin at AUS$500.00 (thats around US$250).

This led to a TV programme including footage (metrage? ... tape ...?) from the Illawarra Folk Festival at Jamberoo, featuring Ted. I'm sure Ted would have put out feelers for the film at the time. There aren't that many companies which work both in documentary and drama (Teliesyn is one, however) so he might not have been speaking to the right people... He's welcome to PM me; most of the commissioners in Welsh broadcasting have changed since my day, but I can still find out who's the right Who for him to contact if he's interested. And Bugsy, I used to work for a Welsh indie and knew a lot of other minority culture Euro. indies ... none of whom were 100 per cent pleased with any co-productions with the USA. You tended to suffer through them for the (presumed) prestige. The Welsh tended to have good relationships with Canadian producers - different corporate culture, I guess. Sian |

It always worked on my past machines - and that goes back quite a few years - it is basic to ASCII coding. You have to hold down the alt key while typing all 4 characters or it doesn't work. I have a small shareware program that prints out all 256 characters for any selected font, as well as the codes. This is indispensible when I start mucking about with specialised faces like music characters. I can't see the contacts that I had at the time of that Welsh TV episode (this is a work machine and all settings and non-core data were scorched to the ground when the IT horde went through before the dreaded Y2k non-event. (Well, not quite a NON-event ... Win 95 stopped talking to our intranet server on 1 January and we had to switch our core machines to NT to get back in there.) I will check to see if the contact names and addresses are in my backup CD, but I remember that the bloke I was dealing with had to be contacted on someone else's email, so he either wasn't cyber-connected ... or wasn't permanent staff. BTW: Oh Murray, if you're still out there ... sorry about the thread drift (I think the ASCII codes are a cross-drift), but it is all in a good cause! Regards, Bob Bolton |
