Wedding invite from Big Mick

I hesitated at first to do this, but in many respects Mudcat has become a community of friends who are like a cyber family. The second of my three daughters (I haven't won an argument in 24 years), Elizabeth is marrying Nathen Schovey tomorrow. I would like to invite you all to a cyber reception, let's sing the songs and drink the vile black stuff!!!! But my family will be there so no spuds and thongs, OK???? I like this young man, and best of all he is pliable. With a little work and some lye soap I think we can make something of him. OK, Nate, let's start with a haircut.......................LOL. Give the lad a proper Mudcat welcome, I am very happy to call him "Son", and now let's get on with the hooley.

It's a grand idea! Do you want to do this as a "virtual" houli, or did you have a real audio seisiun in mind? If so, what time do you want to start? All possible "Mudcat Blessings" upon the soon-t-be newly weds.

Just learn how to drink liquid bread (STOUT) and everything will work out O.K.

(Mick, you hesitated because you were afraid Nate would find out what a big ole teddy bear his dad in law really is? Or because he would find out what a wild one you are yourself? Or... Never mind. What's his MudName? Nat Big Mickson?)

Nat, yer among yer own kind now. Mind ye keep an eye on the little lass for the crowd here is a rowdy, snogging lot and it's not only Saturday night, but the Saturday night o' the time change. Oh yeah, a whole extry hour of snogging fer you an' (God forbid!) yer lady!

And Elizabeth dear, as you start down that path to yer glory as a woman, pssst!! Is yer young man atall like yer dad? Then-- ye've chosen well and 'twill be a joy an' a delight!! I know ye've already wrapped the lad's heart around yer little finger, as sure as he's run off with yours! Be gentle now!

Here's to ye both! May yer best snogs always be saved, one for the other, an' may each and every one of them be blessed with the sparkles and tingles the good Lord made them to have!

An' should it be His pleasure that there be any wee snoglings in the years to come-- why raise them up right in the traditions of their proud Mudcat heritage, for you can't hope for a better bunch of pals to help keep 'em upwind of a stink!

To the dance floor! Ah what a sweet couple they make!

Dear Nate,

Let me take this moment to tell you that you are a lucky man to have found a woman you love. You have also gained a father-in-law. You have to take the bitter with the sweet. That's one of those old sayings and it makes no freakin' sense at all, hence, its probably Irish. The Irish have a lot of those "words of wisdom to live by" and you are going to hear them all repeatedly from Mick. Take a couple of No-Doze before you visit with him.

On the plus side, many of these 'Pearls of Potato Philosophies' will be served up in a language you don't understand called Gaelic. It has a unique sound like a kind of cross between Norwegian and Cockney Rhyming Slang between spoken by a constipated yak. So when he finally comes to the end just nod in agreement with an amazed expression. He'll think you understand and are marvelling at the brilliance of this folk wisdom when in fact you'll be wondering why the hell anyone would learn a language so bizarre.

There will be times that Mick will speak to you in English and my best advice to you there would be to keep your questions simple. Even then you have to be careful. I wanted to set my watch once and asked Mick what time it was. By the time he finished telling me, the battery in my watch was dead and the Cubs had won the Series. In all fairness, Mick measures his words carefully. Hell Nate, he had one sentence alone that measured 67 miles in helvetica size 12 without the spaces.

Now if I might give a large bearhug and wee kiss to both you and your lovely bride, I'll have a large shot of Jack and slide over there with the other 'Catters before Mick tells one of those lame and aging jokes. I assume you've heard all three of them by now so you know what I mean.

Spaw

IRISH BLESSINGS

May the road rise to greet you,
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

May God grant you many years to live,
For sure He must be knowing
The earth has angels all too few
And heaven is overflowing.

May you be in heaven half an hour
Before the Devil knows you're dead!

May God be with you and bless you
May you see your children's children
May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

Walls for the wind
And a roof for the rain,
And drinks beside the fire-
Laughter to cheer you
And those you love near you,
And all that your heart may desire!

May those that love us, love us.
And those that don't love us,
May God turn their hearts.
And if He doesn't turn their hearts,
May He turn their ankles
So we will know them by their limping.

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light
May good luck pursue you each morning and night.

May you live all the days of your life, and
May the saddest day of your future be no worse
Than the happiest day of your past!

Dear Nate,

Sorry to have to talk to you again so soon, but as you can see, its already started. Mary in Ky. has given you that classic "Irish Blessing" and as you can readily see the thing is somewhat dubious to say the least. I don't know what 'Socrates of Spuds' wrote it, but if you really read it, you have to wonder what kind of a blessing it actually is.

Take the first line.........May the road rise up to meet you........Now what kind of thing is that to wish upon someone? The last time the road "rose up to meet me" I got a broken wrist and collarbone, bruised ribs, and some seriously scraped knees and elbows. Or take that line about May the sun shine upon your face or whatever. I would think that the Irish, being fair skinned would be aware of the dangers of skin cancer and wish you some sunblock instead. Also perhaps, some UV eye protection would be good. Or take the last line of that verse........May God hold you in the palm of His hand.......I guess the Irish equate God with Allstate Insurance or something. Beats me. Whatever, keep your premimiums up to date.

Well Nate, I wish you luck. Fortunately you do get the privilege of sharing the life of a lovely and intelligent woman which is no small thing and tends to compensate for a lot...........even Mick.

Big Mickstake, Nathan. Big Mickstake!

First of all you're not only going to have to wash but you're going to have to get a job, join a union, go to church and vote Socialist.

Second, you don't want the guy coming over to your house because he eats like a horse and drinks like a fish. You're going to have to work overtime to keep the fridge stocked with corn beef and Guinness.

Third, you better take out some insurance because the guy is not going to take kindly to your wanderings and failings. Nate, they don't call him "Little Mick." The guy is B-I-G.

Fourth, I hope you like eating sunfish because, if you ever lose your job and you have to count on Michael Mhor, you're going to be eating them 3 times a day as an incentive to find work.

Fifth, take the phone off the hook before you go to bed because BM is likely to call you at 3AM when he downloads a nifty new song off the Mudcat and wants to get your reaction.

Sixth, better start reading up on The Struggle because there's going to be a pop quiz on it everytime you run into the Man Mountain.

Seventh, what do you mean you don't want Barry Finn as your Best Man?

Eighth, what do you mean you don't want to get married in October and spend your honeymoon at Camp Ramblewood?

Ninth, what do you mean you don't want to learn Irish bouzouki and play in the Conklin Ceili Band?

Tenth, what do you mean you don't want children until later. Nathan, it's not too late to consider the seminary!

You're an awful sight in the morning & the sounds you make at night I could swear you're catching horse flies with that nose of yours. I'm sure she must be an angel. LOL Barry

Yep, had to get back in the saddle right away this morning. 8 Days and counting and razor thin. Been at this a long time, was there when Jimmy Carter had the closest ever electoral win. But, this one is unbelievable. Must stay at it.

Barry.....Bite me!!!....and I miss you, you gobshite......LOL.

The wedding was wonderful, but I have forbidden any pictures or videos of me crying from being put on the web. I was standing there, at the back of the hall, when my little Lizzie walked up outside in her beautiful dress............the double doors opened, and there she was, beautiful, my little girl. I wish you all could have seen her when she was little. Blonde hair, round and cute face, a disposition so sweet that teachers in elementary school would vie to have her in their classes. All this passed through my mind as this beautiful young woman stood there in front of me. I remembered the first night I couldn't tuck her in after her mother and I separated. I cried that night too. The tears just flowed down my face as I took her arm and we walked up the aisle. There stood Nathan.........he reached his hand out. I remember not wanting to let her go......she is my little Lizzie, but she looked at him with such love, and I knew that it was time. And so I joined their hands, cried and sat down. And five minutes later I had to rise to sing a song for them. Hardest song I have ever sang, but we got it done.

I have printed out this thread and given it to them. Thanks for all of your good thoughts and best wishes. And I hope you enjoyed the party, I certainly did. Here's to the kids...............
