Subject: THE AUSTRAILAISE
From: MMario

Lest someone accuse me of censoring these lyrics, may I say the following lyrics are reproduced exactly as printed. the blanks in the first verse(with necessary changes to get past a content filter) are in order bleed-in'; blood-y; f*ck-in'; blood-y; blood-y; & in the chorus: blood-y; blood-y; blood-y; f*ck-n'

THE AUSTRALAISE

Fellers of Australier
Blokes an' coves and coots
Shift yer . . . carcasses
Move yer . . . boots
Gird yer . . . loins up
Get yer . . . gun

An' whatch the blighters run.

Get a . . . move on,
Have some . . . sense
Learn the . . . art of
Self de . . . fence

Have some . . . brains
Beneath yer . . . lids
an' swing a . . . sabre
Fer the missus an' the kids.
Chuck supportin' . . . posts,
An' strikin' . . . lights,
Support a . . . fam'ly an'
Strike fer yer . . . rights.

chorus

Joy is . . . fleetin'
Life is . . . short.
Wat's the use er wastin' it
All on . . . sport
Hitch yer . . . tip dray
To a . . . star
Let yer . . . watchword be
Australi. . .ar

chorus

'Ow's our . . . nation,
Goin' to ixpand
Lest us . . . blokes an' coves
Lend a . . . 'and?
'Eave yer . . . apathy
Down a . . . chasm
'Ump yer . . . burden with
Enthusi. . .asm

chorus

W'en old mother Britain
Calls yer native land
Take a . . . rifle,
In yer . . . 'and
Keep yer . . . upper lip
Stiff as stiff kin be. An' speed a . . . buller for
Pos. . .terity.

chorus

W'en the . . . bugle
Sounds "Ad. . .vance"
Don't be like a flock er sheep
in a . . . trance
Biff the . . . foeman
Where it don't agree
Spifler . . . cate him
To Eternity.

chorus

Fellers of Australier,
Cobbes, chaps an' mates,
Hear th . . . enermy
Kickin' at the gates!
Blow the . . . bugle
Beat the . . . drum
Upper-cut and out the cow
to kingdom . . . come!

Looks authentic enough, though I can't get my head round bobbing up and down to check the missing words. What's the tune and the provenance, as they say? I'd incline to sing it to Onward Christian Soldiers.

if it's not that, it's pretty close. I think it's a matter of "insert yer own explitive deleted here". as far as provanence -"I got it from John"

Go to "Quick links" at the top right of the threads page, scroll down and you'll see a link to "Alan's Mudcat MIDI page"..... failing that click here

you'll find many tunes that haven't found their way into the database yet...

McGrath, the provenance of 'Austra-laise' is that it was a poem written by C.J. Dennis, best known for his wonderful collection 'The Sentimental Bloke'. The initial version was entered in The Bulletin's competition for an Australian anthem in 1908 and won a special prize. It was revised in 1914 and widely reprinted. You are quite right - it was sung to the tune of 'Onward Christian Soldiers'.
