BS: The Childish Thread

03 Nov 00 - 02:12 PM (#333739)
Subject: The Childish Thread
From: Clinton Hammond2

Seeing as how Mousethief and I are determined, apparently to sit in our poopy-pants and fling it at each other, i figured -I'd- at least to the Cat a favour and start a thread where we can do it... That way we're not cluttering up anyone elses threads!

Yer a stink head, mt!

You just don't know which of her five "friends" is your daddy. Must be the poop-head one, cos you got that gene in spades.

Now you're getting all serious and I thought this was supposed to be childish.

I always heard that the reason (American) football players say "hi mom" when the camera zooms in on them is that they don't know who their dads are.

When I search for something on Digitrad or The Forum does it have to wade through all this garbage. If so what a waste of bloody time!
Sorry folks KJ

03 Nov 00 - 06:33 PM (#334005)
Subject: RE: BS: The Childish Thread
From: Matt_R

Um, Mouse? "Thou scurvy patch" is from The Tempest by Shakespeare. "Thou shaking, yaping, rammucky lurden" is from The White Company by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. All part of my vocabulary for a long time. Yes, the applejohn one is from the insult generator, but I altered it. Take that, descendant of RATS!!!

(relax...Tolkien quote!) ;-)

To "search" the forum or digitrad Kernow Jon?
that implies you were looking for somthing?, What was it pray you were looking for that got you to this thread, A thread clearly marked BS as well as childish.
I can understand that Cornish can be a bit slow at times but surely if you can use a computer you can read.

Kernow Jon: set the filter to block out "BS" threads. You won't make us stop goofing off, so you might as well give up now.*

Matt: Relax?! Relax?! Ha! You overvalued undergraduate! Stick your left arm up your right nostril, and wave out your ear, you brainless wiper of other people's bottoms.

Subject: RE: BS: The Childish Thread
From: mousethief

You don't breathe at all, you frog-spawn! You just wash water through your gills and wonder when you'll leave the tadpole stage and dry out behind the ears and lose your adolescent tail.

"Idiot"? What kind of a lame-ass insult is that? Sheesh, even someone with as few brain cells* as you, Matt, should be able to do better than THAT.

Getting serious temporarily: This is a great thread. Too bad the insults can't be confined to this thread instead of spreading out all over the Forum.

It's not me that decides which data the computer searches through. We may be slow but not to thick to understand that if we type a word or two into the search box the computer will search all the threads looking for our data. The greater the threads the longer the search!

It has been pointed out many times now every time this old story about "BS" threads taking up space, slowing down the system, causing global warming, making penguins fall over, BSE, aids, etc that if you set the filter to ignore "BS" threads they will be ignored, or so Max says

Subject: RE: BS: The Childish Thread

Perhaps someone can correct me on this but as far as I can tell with the searches and thread lists in this forum.

The filter box on this page is an inclusive filter, i.e. it limits the threads to those that contain a word, e.g. BS and I can see no way of entering an exclusive filter. I believe that the forum search accessible from the quick links also operates in this manner.

The above only search through the thread titles but to the best of my knowledge, the forum super search, the most powerful (and also the slowest), searches through every bit of text posted here regardless of whether it is a BS thread or not.

There is a form, threadsnot.cfm, that John in Brisbane mentioned in BS or No BS: Choices via Max and as far as I am aware that is the only means of filtering out BS threads.

Please don't get me wrong, I do contribute to BS but I think that it is wrong to claim that it has no impact on the forum. As far as I see it, even filtering out BS requires additional processing. Perhaps someone would care to enlighten me on this issue.

Jon

Subject: RE: BS: The Childish Thread

actually the searches don't search the forum. they search an index of the forum.

04 Nov 00 - 10:31 AM (#334413)
Subject: RE: BS: The Childish Thread
From: Jon Freeman

MMario, I don't think that whether an index within the Mudcat is searched or not makes any real difference to my point although I must admit that I am surprised to hear that the list of threads on the main page and the forum search from the quick links use idexes for this purpose as I would have imagined SQL queries on the actual tables, lets call them Threads and Posts respectively more likely.

I am aware that the Super Search does use an indexing system. This is a special index that is built up periodically, presumably by reading through the text in every post and I would guess that the resulting search effectively reads through all this text albiet in a more efficient manner.

Subject: RE: BS: The Childish Thread
From: Jon Freeman

Well Mousthief, you have managed to say something I did not say. For your benefit, I will try again:

I contribute to BS threads and I am raising no objection towards others who do the same. I do however think that it is incorrect for people to suggest that:

a) Its presence does not inconvienience those who wish to read purely music related threads and unless I am corrected, I believe that the use of a special form which is not linked to in the main forum is necessary to achieve this.

b) It does not add to the volume of text that the system has to handle. In other words, those who see this forum as a folk and blues forum do have searches slowed down by the presence of BS.

As for who does what and what can the forum can be used for, ultimately, only Max can decide on that issue and he allows BS and non BS.

Jon
