BS: Suicide?

I heard on the radio today and saw on Yahoo, stories about the Greek hijacker committing suicide by jumping from an open window on the seventh floor of police headquarters. Is it just that I'm a hardened cynic or does anyone else find this story suspicious? Does it not sound like those old South African suicides where the black leaders kept 'jumping' to their deaths while in police custody? It didn't help that CBC radio ran a story this morning following up on Canadian police practices in Saskatchewan where they took inebriated natives out of town last winter and left them to die without proper clothing in bitter cold weather.

At the moment, I'm taking it at face value. The man seems to have been pretty disturbed. And if you want a nice quiet "suicide" cover up, you don't do it by throwing the guy out of the window...

Oh yeah you do... Slitting his wrists or hanging him with his own belt would leave too many clues. Bruises, for instance, as he would likely struggle with his murderers. Giving a guy a shove, however, won't leave much evidence at all.

Corruption is rampant. Perhaps it has always been. But the years I have shared on this earth have help me to become cynical. I find almost all things hard to take at face value. Especially things involving governments; national, regional or local. More especially things involving law enforcement. Far more injustice takes place in halls of "justice" than we would like to admit.

Regarding this story, I have not heard of it before this thread. But, as I said, I take little at face value.

Funny that, all the same.... is there not some building regulation that says that all windows above a certain storey height must be unopenable.....?

And shouldn't there be something in police regulations about not leaving disturbed men who have just murdered a couple of people and taken a bus load of Japanese tourists hostage alone near open 7th floor windows?

Acording to the report I read, he broke away from the officers who were with him, ran into an adjoining office, dived through the glass and was killed when he struck a concrete canopy six stories down.
This does not sound to me like he was left alone near an open window.I could be wrong of course as I have not re-read the article today and my memory could be fuzzy
I'm prepared to take the story at face value but I realize that some of us always seem to want to put the worst possible face on some things, especially where law enforcment is concerned.

I've got no strong opinion on this one, flattop.

But, on the subject of "suicide"...it's an expression that people use for when someone deliberately takes his own life quickly<\b>...as in a few seconds or minutes of planned action.

But what about when people take their own life slowly, over a period of many years, by smoking, drinking, overeating, bad diet, lack of excercise, toxic emotional habits (such as hatred, vengefullness, bitterness, etc), and sheer stupid destructive lifestyle choices of every kind? Is that not suicide? I believe it is, and it is more common than grass. In fact, it is the rule, not the exception in this society. The vast majority of people these days die by suicide, as far as I'm concerned....slow suicide, that is. Look at how fast they age, and you will have a good set of clues on this matter.

In any case with a political context, or where the prisoner concerned is from a racial minority, suicides in police custiody are always open to suspicion. There've been too many cases of brutality and killing for there to be a justifiable automatic assumption in favour of the police. Sensible police officers will insist that there is a proper investigation in any such case, precisely for that reason.

From what I've seen of this case though, I'd be hard to see the motive for murder by the arresting officers. So I'd suspect a degree of negligence or incompetance rather than anything else.

Why is it so difficult to accept that he just jumped out of the window?

People get suspicious because there have been too many people who have been thrown out of windows after being arrested. And it happened in Greece - under the Colonels.

Without knowing anything about this case more than the brief stories, my guess is he probably did jump rather than being pushed. But it isn't an unreasonable suspicion, sadly.

Flattop, "GREEK" building regulations would be a contradiction in terms.

Now, sledge, an insensitive statement like that just might push some unstable Greek over the edge. You should be ashamed of yourself! :-D

I still think suicide by smoking is the worst, closely followed by suicide by beer, pizza, and Sunday afternoon football watching. The Homer Simpson variety.

Little hawk, I stand by my words though they may be a touch harsh.

Just look at that pile of rubble in the middle of Athens, the pile on top of that big rock. They've had it for several thousand years and it's still covered in scaffolding. In fact, look around the country and you''ll find many other places just like it.
