From: flattop I heard on the radio today and saw on Yahoo, stories about the Greek hijacker committing suicide by jumping from an open window on the seventh floor of police headquarters. Is it just that I'm a hardened cynic or does anyone else find this story suspicious? Does it not sound like those old South African suicides where the black leaders kept 'jumping' to their deaths while in police custody? It didn't help that CBC radio ran a story this morning following up on Canadian police practices in Saskatchewan where they took inebriated natives out of town last winter and left them to die without proper clothing in bitter cold weather. |

But the years I have shared on this earth have help me to become cynical. I find almost all things hard to take at face value. Especially things involving governments; national, regional or local. More especially things involving law enforcement. Far more injustice takes place in halls of "justice" than we would like to admit. Regarding this story, I have not heard of it before this thread. But what about when people take their own life slowly, over a period of many years, by smoking, drinking, overeating, bad diet, lack of excercise, toxic emotional habits (such as hatred, vengefullness, bitterness, etc), and sheer stupid destructive lifestyle choices of every kind? Is that not suicide? I believe it is, and it is more common than grass. In fact, it is the rule, not the exception in this society. The vast majority of people these days die by suicide, as far as I'm concerned....slow suicide, that is. Look at how fast they age, and you will have a good set of clues on this matter. |

From: McGrath of Harlow In any case with a political context, or where the prisoner concerned is from a racial minority, suicides in police custiody are always open to suspicion. There've been too many cases of brutality and killing for there to be a justifiable automatic assumption in favour of the police. Sensible police officers will insist that there is a proper investigation in any such case, precisely for that reason.
From what I've seen of this case though, I'd be hard to see the motive for murder by the arresting officers. So I'd suspect a degree of negligence or incompetance rather than anything else. |

Without knowing anything about this case more than the brief stories, my guess is he probably did jump rather than being pushed. But it isn't an unreasonable suspicion, sadly. |
