Anyone got album or song title suggestions for a good place to start? I've heard his name a few times from heros of mine, like Garnet Rogers and James Keelaghan...

But where do i start?

His homepage, run by his widow, Jeanene. She has sound clips and lots of stuff for sale.

I started with a CD that my dad got me for Christmas after hearing about him on the radio--my first thought was, "Who the Hell is this?". It was a compilation of, I think, _High, Low, and In Between_ and _Late, Great, Townes Van Zandt_ (not sure, but the CD cover is purple). I also like _Rear-View Mirror_ and _Live at the Old Quarter_. If you can, my approach is usually to listen to all the sound clips I can find and pick an album that sounds promising to start.

Some of my favorite songs are Highway Kind, You Are Not Needed Now, Greensboro Woman, his renditions of Chauffeur Blues and Cocaine Blues, Tecumseh Valley, Lungs, Flying Shoes, Saint John the Gambler, Poncho & Lefty.

I have most of his records, and I think Live at the Old Quarter and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt are probably the best. Also very good are Townes Vandt Zandt and Our Mother the Mountain.

He was a brilliant songmaker who is deeply missed.

Since we're on favorite songs as well, I particularly love "To Live is to Fly," "Marie," "Tower Song," "I'll Be Here in the Morning," and come to think of it, most of the rest of them. I was surprised, by the way, to hear "I'll be Here in the Morning" (sung by someone else) used as the music for a University of Virginia Health System commercial when I was living in Charlottesville last year.

"For the Sake of the Song" is the first album I got and still my favorite. The title song is probably my favorite of his songs, but the whole album is great. "Delta Momma Blues" is another good one.

Hey Clinton....Here's a site that's good for quite a few other things too, but it has a great section on TVZ with a LOAD of links to all the others.

The New Insurgent Country Home Page is a pretty fair lyrics/chords/tabs site for a lot of artists. Check it out.

I'm not sure when it will be broadcast in your town but last Sunday here in Ft Worth the local PBS station broadcast an Austin City Limits episode that was in memory of Townes. It had Guy Clark, Emmy Lou Harris, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Lyle Lovett, Nancy Griffith and others. They all sang Townes Van Zant songs and mixed in clips from his earlier appearances on ACL. I'm not sure how new it was because I missed the first few minutes. Watch for it and check it out.

I second the emotion for Live at the Old Quarter. It is unadorned and fabulous.
