I fixed the link, Matt, then I tried both and couldn't get in to either one, then when I did get in each one, nobody was there!*boo-hoo*

Sorry I missed you all.

I don't think there is anything to be gained by using the Autralian or any other Hearme site. It did appear for a while that the oz site was more stable but it was just co-incidence. As far as I can make out, the problem lies with Hearme (the chances of it being down to one site were low anyway, in fact I can't even see why it should make a difference - just wanted to try it just in case).

I have a horrible feeling that Hearme don't care about the free services any more and the service is not going to improve. Hearme have already hidden the voice creator pages anddon't seem willing to answer technical support questions.

I don't know how long we give it to see this run of problems continue but I think that the time has come to consider/ evaluate alternatives. PalTalk looks favourite to me. They seem to have improved since the last time I looked at them and allow the creation of a permanent room which can be moderated.

The set up is more complicated than Hearme as to use a permanent room requires an admin to open it - could give everyone the admin key though...or use temporary rooms. I have joined a country sing around for the last 2 nights and the set up seems a lot more stable than Hearme.

That sounds interesting Jon. How difficult would it be to set one up for us to try out?

I too have become increasingly concerned about the apparent instability of HearMe. It may become unusable for our purposes. I would support any experiments anyone wants to make with other programs.

I just downloaded it; had a bit of a problem getting my mike to register, but sound came in clearly; and my connection is slower then their minimum!

If anyone wants to try PalTalk, in the first instance, they need to download the software from http://www.paltalk.com/paltalk/index.html and install it. If a couple of people do that we can set up an experiment. In the meanwhile, I would suggest checking out a couple of the existing groups in the music category. I have found "Mulligan's Grand Ole Opry" a very friendly group of people.

I really hope that it doesn't come down to us having to move from Hearme but I feel that it is better to have an alternative ready just in case bigchuck's and my fears are confirmed.

I just asked PalTalk about Mac compatibility. Their answer regarding macs and web-tv is "not yet"

MMario, I think we've heard that one before... I fail to see why these companies do not offer Mac support.

the thing that REALLY bugs me is that the same company that did hearme DOES do a mac realtime voice communication for games. only for games

I've just joined up with the Pal Talk outfit

It's pretty easy to do this, and there seems to be plenty of scope for a singing circle, you'd maybe just be a little more of your neighbours

If a few want to experiment with it, Im a starter (albeit with a technological handicap and a problem with time-zones!)

I'm afraid Jon's fears are confirmed. I've been investigating voice options for my company and while I was checking other info from Hearme, I asked about support for the free version.

I wrote, "There is a Hearme chat room that a group of musicians from around the world uses a couple of times a week that has become completely unstable and unreliable. We'd love to continue it's use but cannot seem to get technical support to address the issues we're having."

Unfortunately the response I got back was as follows:

"HearMe does not currently offer a support opportunity for the free Voice Chat software beyond the support@hearme.com e-mail method. This product will be discontinued at the end of the year. HearMe will offer a new product and more features, at that time. Please check our Web Site regularly for any updates.

I guess it's time to go in search of a product with Mac compatability. . .

I'm signed up with Mudcatters but having trouble with PalTalk! It not only wouldn't let me in, it actually booted me off my own computer!!

What have I done to offend it?? All I did was try the link and it just clipped me round the earhole and told me to restart my computer.....
