I recently heard a parody of "Rolling down to old Maui" about three woman taking a cruise to Maui. It contains such wonderful lines as "his coconut brain made conversing lame", and "Once more we sail with Mary and Gail".

Tankx.

Can't wait for this one....! I have faith in the Mudcat, someone will know it.

Aloha,
Mark, posting frivolously but anxiously awaiting a real reply

I believe that Pam Swan wrote that parody. I got to hear it and laugh along with it at the Getaway. It is great!!

Refreshing in hopes that someone will post the words.

Yes, I hope someone has the words to this. It is too good a concept to let it get away!

As long as we are addressing Maui parodies, at Mystic a few years back a friend of mine heard a parody using this line to start the chorus:

"Rolling (slowing?) down to lethargy..."

Anyone have the words to this one too?

One of our regiment's member has penned a parody entitled "Comin down with old VD". Interested parties may request this via email outside of the forum.

I beg your pardon, Lindsay, but I wrote "Comin' Down With Old VD" in 1983 or thereabouts. I don't sing it any more, so if someone else wants to take the credit that might be OK. Of course, it's quite possible that your friend wrote a different one, by convergent evolution. Mine is still in the DT, with mostly correct words (that's the Digital Tradition, which is part of the Mudcat site; see the FAQ thread if you're having difficulty locating it).

Aloha,
Mark

if Pam did this at the getaway, maybe a personal message to her would get us the lyrics?

Maybe so Mark. I don't dispute your statement. The individual in question is very talented, so the possibility exists that you arrived at a similar title with different words. I would be interested in seeing your version, if you'd care to share it.

Already did that, Mario. She doesn't tune in but every few days or so.

From: p.j.

Hi guys,

Sorry it took me so long to respond, for the last coupla days I've been getting ready for an invasion of singers (The Windlasses) and since Saturday have been enjoying their company around the house.

Thanks Allan, for sending a PM that called my attention to the thread, here's my version of Maui...

ROLLING DOWN FROM OLD MAUI

It's a rough tough life
Of toil and strife
We singles undergo
And we don't give a damn
When the date is done
How bad that date did go

We're homeward bound
Met a Club Med clown
On a cruise that wasn't free
And now I'm done
Drinkin' Coke and Rum
With the boys in old Maui

Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui, me boys
Rollin' down from Old Maui
We're homeward bound
From the tourist town
Rollin' down from Old Maui

Once more I sailed
With a muscular male
Thinkin' maybe he's my man
But his coconut brain
Made our dialog strain
And I won't see him again

Six hellish days
I've pissed away
On a cruise that wasn't free
And now I'm done
I've had my fun
Get me home from Old Maui

Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui...

Once more I sailed
With Julie and Gail
On our vacation week
It rained and poured
We all got bored
And Julie met some geek

We got a little carried away
In a bar in Lahina sound
And now the cops are after us
Thank God we're homeward bound

Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui...

How soft the breeze
Through the island trees
And my heart will never learn
Them native boys
With their jet-ski toys
Are awaiting my return

Every now and then
We'll go back again
Maybe someday soon, we'll see
I'll bag this job
My savings rob
And go back to Old Maui

Chorus: Rollin' down from Old Maui...

Cheers,

pj

Wonderful, pj! I've lived in Hawaii for 6 1/2 years and have never been to Maui...now maybe I don't have to! Actually, though, I've heard that Lahaina (the old whaling port on Maui, now apparently a tourist trap) is the only place for folk music in the islands--not counting Hawaiian music, of course. Fortunately we finally have NPR here on the Hilo side of the Big Island, so at least I can hear Thistle and Shamrock and A Prairie Home Companion. Sure wish Sandy Bradley's Pot Luck was on, though....

I'm sorry, Lindsay, for not posting the link with my original message. This will get you to my song, Coming Down With Old VD, and you can compare it with the one you know. It will be interesting to see what turns up. I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time two people have written similar parodies of the same song...though I can't think of any offhand.

Thanks to pj and Mark I now have two parodies to present to my group. Is there any objection to our doing one of these from the stage, pj?

Unfortunately, Mark, I don't see Roll & Go doing yours from the stage but there are always campfires, parties and bars...

Has anyone been able to come up with "Rolling (Slowing?) Down To Lethargy" yet? I think the guys who heard it said it was introduced as an answer to the people who sing songs like Maui and slow down to a deadly degree at the end.

Thank you all for the kind words, I'm glad you like it.

Naemanson, I'd be tickled for you to do it on stage-- please let me know how it goes! Does Roll & Go have a website?

Mark, your "Comin' Down With Old VD" is a crack-up! Accept no substitutes folks, his version is perfect. By the way, I've never been to Lahina either (I just picked it for the whaling reference.) If it's the hotspot for folk music in the Islands, though, maybe we should all meet up there one of these days...a Mudcat gathering in Lahina? Whaddya think? "I'll bag this job, my savings rob..."

z! Thanks for starting the thread, but where did you hear the song originally? It would be fun to know if someone else had heard it and started doing it already.

I was told Saturday, after hearing "Slowing down to Lethargy" for the first time, that it was written by Toby Fagenson. A quick google turned this up:

where this CD has the song on it.

I believe that "Slowing Down to Lethergy" was indeed composed by Toby Fagenson. Hilary Spencer sings it in a leisurely fashion on her personal CD HILARY SPENCER: Afterimage (2003).
