I feel as though I've done a lot of whinging recently and I'm rather embarrased about it but it turns out that some of the reason I've been so low and out of sorts is that I have a socking great abcess in my jawbone. It's been there about 4-6 weeks and my dentist is stunned I'm still on my feet let alone didn't go to see him until this morning.
I've got anti-biotics to clear the infection but he can't start the root canal work until December.Does anyone have any helpful, preferably non-painkiller if possible, tips on how to manage until then?

well, Oil of Cloves is good for dental pain,(tastes disgusting but numbs the nerves, and anything else it touches) but by a strange co-incidence so is malt Whiskey, which doesnt taste NEARLY so unpleasent, and has very similar effects, I have been using this if/when the occasion arises.. and it hash hardlyyy effected my speach......preferably one of the peatier islands, but if its gotta be Speyside, dont stint yersel' go for Glenmorangie aged in Madeira casks....

Oh, Terri- I'm so sorry! The good old warm (or cold, which ever feels better) compress should help. I use a few drops of lavender essential oil to help with the pain. Lots of rest, and perhaps more than the usual dosage of whatever alocoholic beverage suits you! I'm sure some of these wisewomen-and-men will have the right herbal and other combos for tea, etc. Feel better soon!!!

I agree with micca and heartily recommend cloves as well as whiskey. Try combining the two and making a hot whiskey. Even if it doesn't cure you, you'll never feel the pain after about 4 or 5 of them.
Oh, and if you can't drink cos you're on the anti-erotics (oops, Freudian slip - when you say one thing and mean a mother...), I suppose the clove oil will do just fine on its own.

Sorry to hear that, Terri- but hope the antibiotics make you feel MUCH better, very soon. Sending you a virtual glass of Mmario's hot chocolate with a slug of sloe gin.... mmmmmm....... and it kills all known germs too, honest!!

Have you tried a hot water bottle or one of those packs you heat up in the microwave? heat often helps.

Get well soon.

Before you head over to the nearest boozer for some single malt, I should remind people that alcohol interferes with antibiotics and severely reduces their effectiveness in clearing up infection. If you can wait till you've finished using it before you drown your sorrows you'll do better.

Other than that all I can suggest is what others have said, Oil of Cloves and compresses. And of course gallons of sympathy.

Ah, puir womon, sorry to hear of this, but glad to know you have solved some of what's been bothering you so much. The Oil of Cloves does work really well. Heat would increase circulation to that area, so in theory should speed things up a bit by circulating the antobiotics more in that region. Don't forget to eat plenty of yogurt to replace the good stuff in your intestines which gets destroyed by the drugs.

You can even take an actual whole clove and clench it between the teeth which are bothering you so and it will help, but I prefer the oil.

According to my Prescription for Nutritional Healing calendula, chamomile, peppermint, and yarrow are all good natural anti-inflammatories.

Alcohol-free goldenseal extract can be used as an antibacterial mouthwash. With inflammations, you can place a bit of it on a piece of sterile cotton and place it on the area overnight. It says to do this for 3 nights in a row to reduce inflammation and destroy bacteria.

Also, rinse with warm salt water, 1/2 teaspon to 8 ounces of water.

Hope these help!

Lots of love and healing energy coming your way, darlin'...

Careful with the oil of cloves as prolonged use can cause localised nerve damage, I know your going to have the ones in the offending whipped out, but there are still plenty of healthy ones that would like to remain so.

Cheers

Ol 'cleese is right. Lay off of the alcohol while on the antibiotic. Get your dentist to give you some Percodan or something for the pain.

You need to call in all those snogs you've been giving out so freely. Mine are already on the way to ya.

Also - watch out for concentrated oil of cloves. When I had wisdom problems (the tooth kind of course) I rubbed some on & nearly shat myself!! If its really strong then it might do more harm than good. Hopefully the atibiotics will take it down quickly, and with any luck it'll give you some peace until he can do the root stuff. It's lovely when the pain stops!!!

Thanks for the tips guys. The pain is actually in the side of my face, head and neck, practically nothing near the teeth, which is why it took me so long to realise what was up ( never said I was bright, did I?).I've never actually had anything wrong with my teeth before and so was feeling a bit stocked and shunned this morning, and no idea how to treat it, but I've just done an afternoons work so it's not that awful.

Tooth pain and the vagaries of tooth nerves! I am glad you found out what was getting you down. Always best to check out your health when you are feeling crappy.

Warm rinse with salt water may help. Rest when you can. Aspirin. The antibiotics will give you some relief pretty quickly.
Complain if it hurts. That can help too. I will keep you next to Karen in my prayer line. Feel better.

Hi Morticia,

I've just come out of a similar bout of neuralgia (the medical term for that excruciating pain down the side of your head, in your temple area and into your neck and shoulder muscles) but I have had this problem before and each time I get it now I know that one of my teeth is attacking from the inside so I get to the dentist ASAP and get an X-ray to find the offending article. Once the dentist gets on the case it starts getting better pretty quickly. The anti-biotics are a bit slow acting but I use the microwaveable wheat-filled heat bags on the side of my face and also around the back of my neck. Make sure you don't set the microwave too high. Warm, not burning hot.

When I first had this problem years ago I found myself using the side of a coffee cup, the top half of the cup when it was half full so that's when I realised that heat made it feel better. Often after using the heat bag for a few minutes the pain goes away for a matter of hours, so it's quick and effective for hours.

I agree that whiskey works. My father got me onto that idea when I first had the problem. I swill it around in my mouth, around the offending tooth.

BUT, I never used whiskey when on anti-biotics, only before I could get to the dentist.

You have my deepest sympathy - I know exactly what you are going through.

Helen

thanks everyone, and Helen, I know just what you mean, I've been using a half filled coffee cup on my face without even thinking about it. I note no-one has been tempted to tell me what root canal work is like....oh dear!

Also do the adrenal thing I mailed you about, it all relates, and CRY when you need to, it will actually reduce or stop the pain while you are doing it.

Tear off a rant in my direction anytime too, PM or e-mail, and lean a little anywhere it feels safe. Oh and watch out for loud, high music-- owwww!!!! Try bathing it in slow, warm, deep-toned music along with the coffee cup. Experiment to find the frequency of sound that helps.

Experiment also with light in the room-- and colors-- and touch-- and smell-- all sensory inputs are wacko when there is nerve pain. Trust your instincts, and be a bother if necessary to get things arranged so they work for YOU.

If it's any consolation Ihadn't noticed any whingeing coming from you. I suppose "grit your teeth" isn't very constructive advice in the circumstances but I hope all goes well.

Morticia,

By the time I got to the root canal bit it was all a breeze. By then you are all anaesthetised in the jaw area and anything goes. Once the dentist starts getting rid of the bits inside your tooth there is nothing left to make the pain so it's smooth sailing from there on - in my experience.

Use a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or one of those heat/cool first aid gel-filled pads if you don't have a heat-bag. Anything which is completely safe and can be moulded around your face & neck will help (i.e. don't try to do makeshift stuff which might break and spill hot water on you).

The antibiotics should be kicking in by now. Are they starting to work? For quick relief when the pain gets really bad I use an over-the-counter drug known as Nurofen or Ibuprofen in Australia. Do you have it there? I know you asked for drug-free assistance but if it gets really bad one or two of these gets rid of the pain really quickly and then the other remedies help to keep the pain away or at least keep it at a minimum. I only used the Nurofen once or twice over a period of a few days.

Look after yourself. Stress may make the pain worse so Praise's suggestions should help keep the stress-monsters at bay.

I am definitely improved today, it still hurts but it's much better. I expect to be sitting up and taking a little light broth anyday now. Thanks for your all your help.I don't mind confessing that I was a little panicked, 41 is a helluva age to get to without ever having toothache or anything done to your teeth, aside from a quick operation to whip out my wisdoms ( and doesn't that explain a lot!).I see I wasn't missing much.

I'll second Helen's testimony. That root canal work didn't hurt, and after the dentist was done with the first session, neither did my jaw. I was able to safely drive my car home afterwards. It's honestly something to look foreward to, Mortitcia. Perhaps they could squeeze you in earlier if you asked, and somebody cancelled an appointment?

Thanks, Hollowfox,I'll ask, I didn't think of it...... ( see what I mean about the wisdom teeth?).I can report from the battlefront, that it some better and stopped, clearly playing hard to get, and the anti-biotics are causing diverse unpleasant symptoms best not discussed in a polite forum.Hey ho......

I had a root canal 18 years ago, and, I'm not going to tell you what it was like. Suffice to say, I didn't burn the dentists house down. (Couldn't find it) Maybe some humor? At the NOMAD gathering, a group of us had dinner together, and Jeri winced in pain, saying she had a tender tooth. The worst of it was, she couldn't tolerate novocain. Someone asked her what she did when she had to get teeth work done and she said...wait for it.. "I transcend dental medication."
