depends on which version you know of it. some are traditional, others aren't

Well I'd say all the versions I've heard are "Trad" or "Trad. arr."

Certainly there's a good range of versoions . . Inc. Gypsy Davey and Seven Yellow Gypsies . .

sorry George, I should have clarified - what I meant was that some arrangments are under copy right, though the song itself is traditional.

I was actually going through the different versions,yesterday night,not able to decide which one I preferred.Which one is the traditional one- or I should say:which one is the less traditional?!

It was probably written by Anon in 1643 to embarass Lord Cassilis (several months after his wife died, late 1642). He was a staunch Covenanter. [There was no truth in the tale.]
