Can anyone tell me of anyplace to go to hear enjoyable music? I like traditional, classical, Dixieland and ragtime. Don't like contemporary jazz. |

WWOZ at http://www.wwoz.org/ is a good place to start. The radio station is an integral part of our Jazzfest (April/May). The Times Picayunne site might help locate something current. http://www.nolalive.com/entertainment/ There's a bit of folk and a bit of celtic but not much singing. Lots of Cajun and Zydeco dancing. The quantity, quality, and variety of live music available in NOLA is bewildering. At least once, grab a go cup and take an evening stroll down Bourbon street. It is old, lewd, dirty, tacky as hell, touristy, and wonderful. The doors will be open and the music will be loud so you can spend an entire evening just sampling the musical smorgasbord. If you hear something you like, go on in, buy an overpriced Bud and enjoy for a while, then move on. Eat early, eat often, and eat to excess regularly. Forget about eating healthy for a day or two. The big name restaurants are truly world class, but you can pick a neighborhood restaurant you've never heard of at random and there is a good chance you will have one of the best meals of your life. |

Preservation Hall is still around, so I am told, and is a simple setting with no alcolhol and benches for seating. I like Maisson Bourbon, which is on the corner of Bourbon and (I think) Toulouse Street.No cover, but outrageously priced drinks and a one drink per set minimum. Most folks don't stay long, so you can always get a seat. But I went there twice this year, and found quality hot jazz from a couple of different bands. All old-timers, all traditional songs. You might also run this question by the friendly folks at the Bourbon Street chatroom -- www.nola.com. And grab a bowl of Creole jambalaya at Papa Joe's, across the street. |

Love the ballad room where they shoo you upstairs if you can't listen to the singers. And if you're on vacation from a structured life, the beauty of the place is you can just roam the Quarter streets and see what sounds come wafting out the doors. You might pass that place with the great piano bar just by happenstance. |
